Mali travel warnings: what official governments say right now

  • Article
  • updated 2026-05-14

Official travel advisories for Mali: 11 governments say do not travel, 0 say avoid non-essential travel, and 0 publish caution-level advice.

Mali is a unanimous do-not-travel destination: all 11 government sources in this batch advise against going, across 13 severe warning items. This is not a close call. The April 25, 2026 coordinated attacks by JNIM and FLA — hitting Kidal, Gao, Kati, and the vicinity of Bamako International Airport on the same day — are the most recent trigger, but the underlying threat profile (terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, fuel shortages) has been building for years. Every advisory here recommends leaving by commercial flight if you're already in country, and multiple explicitly forbid overland exits.

Different governments use different labels, but HostelPunk normalizes them into do_not, reconsider, and caution so the signal is comparable across sources. For Mali, the source-vote pattern is 11 do-not-travel source votes, 0 avoid non-essential travel source votes, 0 caution source votes. The warning-item inventory is 13 do-not-travel items and 2 caution items.

What the official warnings say

The April 25 attacks are the sharpest recent data point. Germany's Auswärtiges Amt updated on 2026-05-14 — the most recent entry in this batch — citing those coordinated JNIM and FLA strikes explicitly. FCDO (updated 2026-05-02) confirms Bamako Airport is now open but warns of ongoing delays and cancellations; check with your airline before moving. Both FCDO and Germany specifically warn against overland routes to neighboring countries, calling them too dangerous because of terrorist attacks along national highways. Canada adds fuel shortages to the threat list and notes that if the situation deteriorates further, the Canadian Embassy in Bamako may not be able to provide consular services.

France Diplomatie appears three times: a Dernières minutes security update from 2026-05-04, an earlier alert from 2026-04-07, and a zonal advisory from 2026-04-15 flagging terroriste, enlèvement, and criminalité risks across named areas. Japan MOFA holds Mali at レベル4 — its highest category, "evacuate/do not travel" — on a continuous basis. Spain goes furthest in plain language: "SE DESACONSEJA EL VIAJE A MALI BAJO CUALQUIER CIRCUNSTANCIA" (travel discouraged under any circumstances), citing a fuel crisis in Bamako and nationwide terrorist and kidnapping risk concentrated in the north, center, and border areas.

The practical read: compare the normalized band, the issuer, the update date, and the summary in the list below before deciding whether to travel, reroute, fly instead of using overland transport, or skip Mali for now.
