Mexico travel warnings: what official governments say right now

  • Article
  • updated 2026-05-14

Official travel advisories for Mexico: 2 governments say do not travel, 5 say avoid non-essential travel, and 2 publish caution-level advice.

France and Japan issue do-not-travel ratings for parts of Mexico — the highest tier across 9 official sources tracked here. Five more governments (Canada, Switzerland, UK, Italy, New Zealand) land at avoid-non-essential-travel, and two (Australia, Ireland) at heightened caution. HostelPunk counts one vote per source at its highest issued tier; 7 of the 9 sources hit do_not or reconsider.

The raw item counts are higher — 3 do-not-travel items, 9 avoid-non-essential items, 23 caution items — because single sources can issue multiple zone-specific notices. Italy's MAECI accounts for a large share of the caution item count.

What the official warnings say

The do_not tier has two sources. France's Ministère de l'Europe et des Affaires Étrangères (updated 2026-04-21) applies three internal severity bands — red (formally inadvisable), orange (inadvisable except for compelling reasons), yellow (heightened vigilance) — to named zones including Monterrey, Sinaloa, road corridors, and with Cancún and the Riviera Maya flagged at a lower internal band. Japan MOFA runs a Level 3 do-not-travel notice (渡航は止めてください) updated 2026-04-08, citing ongoing security risks. France also has an undated "Dernières minutes" flash specifically for Sinaloa state security.

The reconsider tier is the widest: Canada (updated 2026-05-13), Switzerland (2026-05-05), UK (2026-04-29), Japan at Level 2 (2026-04-08), Italy (2026-03-02), and New Zealand (2026-02-24). Canada names Chiapas, Chihuahua, and Colima among the affected states, with specific carve-outs for Palenque, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, San Cristóbal de las Casas, and Chihuahua City. The UK singles out most of Tijuana in Baja California, with exceptions for airside Tijuana airport transit, the Cross Border Xpress bridge, and toll road 1D/Via Rápida.

The caution tier covers Canada ("high degree of caution" for criminal activity and kidnapping, 2026-05-13), Australia ("high degree of caution," 2026-04-16), Ireland ("High Degree of Caution," 2026-02-25), Japan Level 1 (2026-04-08), Italy, and three France flash alerts with no listed update dates: Chiapas/Tabasco security, a dengue surge, and an extortion spike in Quintana Roo state.

Two specific details worth noting: Ireland flags that Irish passport holders can use eGates at Mexico City (Benito Juárez), Cancún, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta airports. The UK flags the FIFA World Cup 2026, which Mexico co-hosts between 11 June and 19 July — relevant if you're planning travel in that window.
