Public web evidence supports Nice as a plausible bed bug hotspot, but not a clearly hostel-only problem. Hostel and budget-hotel review pages contain multiple property-specific reports, including clusters in older Tripadvisor reviews and at least one 2023 hostel review. More importantly, local government and housing sources show active municipal guidance, social-housing support, and a 2026 treatment operation covering 212 apartments in two residential towers. The broader Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region also ranked high in a 2019-2020 Inserm/Sentinelles medical-consultation study.
This is an evidence note, not an inspection certificate. Reviews can be wrong, older reports can be fixed, and bites alone are weak evidence. The useful question is simpler: where do repeated reports show up, and does the pattern look hostel-only or broader?

Hostels with bed bug reports in Nice
What the public web shows
- City of Nice public-health page, updated 21 May 2025, has a dedicated bed bug guidance page. It says bed bugs proliferate in large urban areas, can affect clean as well as unsanitary housing, and advises residents to inspect homes when moving, ask landlords for pest-free certification where possible, and treat laundry/furniture with heat, steam, freezing, and professional help where needed. - National public-health evidence: Anses reported in July 2023 that 11% of French households had been infested between 2017 and 2022, with travel, luggage, second-hand furniture/textiles, shared housing, and insecticide resistance as drivers. Source: Anses, 19 July 2023.
- Regional signal: Inserm/Sentinelles estimated about 72,000 GP consultations in metropolitan France from April 2019 to March 2020, and PACA had the second-highest incidence among regions listed in the release: 145 consultations per 100,000 inhabitants, behind Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes. Source: Inserm press release, 27 July 2020.
- Nice housing intervention: Paris Cote d'Azur reported on 12 February 2026 that Rentokil and Cote d'Azur Habitat treated two towers in the Les Moulins district, involving 212 apartments, with canine detection, heat treatment, freezing for sensitive belongings, and follow-up detection. Source: Paris Cote d'Azur, 12 Feb 2026.
- Social-housing support: Nice24 reported that Cote d'Azur Habitat would financially cover bed bug treatment for tenants in many cases, with named affected areas including Roquebilliere, Les Liserons, Saint-Augustin, Bon-Voyage, and the city center. It also cited PACA as France's second-most affected region in the Inserm study. Source: Nice24.
- Local press plan: Nice-Presse reported on 13 September 2021 that the City of Nice, Cote d'Azur Habitat, and the CCAS announced measures against bed bugs, again citing PACA's high regional burden. Source: Nice-Presse, 13 Sep 2021.
- Hostel review evidence: Tripadvisor for Hostel Meyerbeer shows a dense older cluster of bed bug reviews, especially 2014, plus management responses saying bugs can be brought by travelers and rooms are treated/blocked after complaints. Source: Tripadvisor - Hostel Meyerbeer.
- Additional hostel/budget-hotel review hits: Tripadvisor/search-visible pages mention bed bugs or suspected bed bugs at Hotel Baccarat in a July 2023 review, Hotel Antares via bed bug photos/review labels, Hotel Lyonnais photo captions, Hostel Altair review text, Auberge de Jeunesse Les Camelias older review text, and Hotel Paradis older review text. - Non-hostel hotel evidence: Tripadvisor photo/review pages include bed bug claims at Holiday Inn Nice by IHG from November 2019 and Crowne Plaza Nice - Grand Arenas by IHG from an August stay, showing the review signal is not limited to dorm-style accommodation. Sources: Holiday Inn Nice photo/review page, Crowne Plaza Nice - Grand Arenas.
- Traveler forum signal: Reddit users discussing Nice hotels in 2025 reported seeing bed bug mentions across multiple low-cost hotels and not just one hostel, though this is anecdotal and not verified. Source: r/nicefrance discussion.
Why this place fits the pattern
- Nice has high tourist churn, dense budget accommodation near the station/city center, seasonal peaks, and international luggage movement, all matching Anses/Inserm drivers: travel, shared accommodation, and passive transport in bags or clothing.
- The city and department sit in a high-signal region: PACA had one of the highest bed bug-related GP consultation rates in the 2019-2020 Inserm/Sentinelles study.
- Housing density matters. Nice municipal guidance explicitly treats the issue as an urban housing problem, and the 2026 Les Moulins tower operation suggests building-level spread can occur beyond individual rooms.
- Older buildings, frequent tenant turnover, vacation rentals, second-hand furniture/textile movement, and delayed reporting due to stigma or cost are plausible amplifiers, consistent with Anses and Nice municipal guidance.
Is it just hostels?
Not hostel-only. The hostel detector signal is meaningful because several Nice hostels and budget properties have public bed bug mentions, and dorms/shared rooms are mechanically higher-risk. But the broader evidence is stronger than a hostel-only explanation:
- Nice city hall runs public guidance for residents and movers, not just tourists.
- Cote d'Azur Habitat and local agencies have treatment/support programs for apartments and social housing.
- A 2026 operation treated 212 homes in two residential towers.
- Review/forum evidence includes ordinary hotels and branded hotels, not only hostels.
- National sources describe bed bugs across homes, shared housing, luggage, second-hand goods, and travel settings.
I did not find a Nice-specific official source proving persistent infestation in public transit. Nationally, France had a 2023 public-transport scare, but government/transport statements at the time emphasized verification and did not establish a transport-sector resurgence. For Nice, the concrete local evidence is concentrated in accommodation and housing.
Caveats
- Most property-level evidence comes from traveler reviews, photo captions, and forum posts. These can be stale, duplicated, exaggerated, or removed, and many do not include professional confirmation.
- Several hostel reports are old, especially the 2014 Hostel Meyerbeer cluster, so they indicate historical vulnerability more than current infestation.
- Search-visible review snippets may surface extreme complaints disproportionately.
- No official Nice case-count dataset by property type was found in this quick public-web pass.
- The detector shows no reports in the last 30 days or 6 months, so the current signal may be latent/historical rather than an active outbreak in hostel reviews.
