Niger carries a critical warning posture on HostelPunk. All 11 source governments in this batch issued do_not advisories — zero at reconsider, zero at caution. The 15 do_not warning items and one caution item leave no meaningful split in the signal. Unless the trip is essential and planned around serious risk management, reroute or skip.
HostelPunk normalizes advisory language into do_not, reconsider, and caution so the signal is comparable across sources regardless of how each government labels its tiers.
What the official warnings say
Germany (updated 2026-05-14) warns against all travel and states that embassy staff in Niamey were temporarily relocated due to the security situation and cannot currently guarantee consular assistance. Canada (updated 2026-05-06) cites political instability, terrorism, and kidnapping, and recommends leaving by commercial means if already in-country. Italy's Viaggiare Sicuri (updated 2026-04-29) flagged active demonstrations.
France Diplomatie carries two separate alerts dated 2026-04-07: a general security situation update and a specific kidnapping risk warning for the Diffa region. France also designates parts of Niger as zones formellement déconseillées — its highest-risk category — citing terrorism, banditry, road risk, and flooding.
The UK FCDO (updated 2026-02-17) advises against all travel, noting a rise in kidnappings of foreign nationals including in Niamey. The FCDO page relays a US Embassy Security Alert from October 22, 2025 warning that American citizens face kidnapping risk throughout Niger including the capital; FCDO assesses British citizens at equal risk. Spain (updated 2026-02-09) describes an extremely serious security situation, very high kidnapping risk for foreigners, and discourages all travel outside Niamey.
Japan MOFA (updated 2024-06-04) issued a nationwide Level 4 evacuation advisory — its maximum — while simultaneously downgrading specific listed areas to Level 3. Both levels advise against travel. New Zealand (updated 2024-11-29) independently rates Niger at Level 4 of 4, citing terrorism, armed militants, and an unpredictable security situation.
