North Korea travel warnings: what official governments say right now

Official travel advisories for North Korea: 3 governments say do not travel, 2 say avoid non-essential travel, and 1 publish caution-level advice.

Three governments — Canada, Australia, and New Zealand — are telling their citizens not to travel to North Korea at all. The UK and Ireland rate it avoid-non-essential. Italy's Farnesina has two live caution alerts. That's five of six sources at the severe end of the scale. For a backpacker, the answer is no.

What the official warnings say

Six governments have current advisories on North Korea: 3 do-not-travel, 2 avoid-non-essential, and 2 caution items (both from Italy's MAECI, so one source). The three do-not-travel advisories name the same core risks: arbitrary detention, a repressive regime, and an unpredictable security situation tied to North Korea's nuclear weapons program. New Zealand's advisory is the oldest of the three, last updated 2024-11-29; Canada's is the most recent at 2026-05-06.

The UK's FCDO, updated 2025-12-10, specifically notes that Pyongyang can look calm on the surface while the wider security situation can shift without warning — a useful reminder that the capital's apparent normalcy is not a signal to downgrade risk.
