Papua New Guinea travel warnings: what official governments say right now

  • Article
  • updated 2026-05-14

Official travel advisories for Papua New Guinea: 0 governments say do not travel, 6 say avoid non-essential travel, and 3 publish caution-level advice.

Nine governments have active travel advisories on Papua New Guinea. The breakdown: 6 reconsider advisories (avoid non-essential travel) and 3 sources at caution, producing 24 total warning items — 0 do_not, 6 reconsider, 18 caution. No government has issued a full do-not-travel, but Canada, the UK, Japan, Italy, Switzerland, and New Zealand all frame PNG travel as avoidable without a specific reason.

The Highlands are the hard constraint. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Hela Province, Southern Highlands Province, and most of Enga Province. Enga's provincial government has declared all districts except Wabag a "fighting zone" following intercommunal violence in the Wapenamanda area, with reported deaths, property destruction, and active curfews. Switzerland's FDFA extends that list to Western Highlands Province. New Zealand rates Hela, Enga, and Southern Highlands at level 3 of 4 — their second-highest advisory tier.

The rest of the country isn't clean either. Italy's Viaggiare Sicuri issues individual city-level warnings for Port Moresby, Lae, Mount Hagen, Goroka, Tari, Madang, Tabubil, the Lagaip-Porgera district (specifically flagged for clashes and landmines), and the Bougainville Autonomous Region. Ireland's DFA describes the security situation as "very challenging, both in Port Moresby and outside." France Diplomatie has two active health alerts for Port Moresby: a dengue and malaria surge, and a separate polio outbreak advisory. Italy's Viaggiare Sicuri adds a nationwide cholera warning.

As of the FCDO's April 5, 2026 update, Cyclone Maila was tracking from the Solomon Islands toward PNG, with Western Province Islands most exposed and severe weather predicted across all provinces. Check current status before any coastal or island travel.

HostelPunk normalizes advisory language from nine different governments — each using its own labels, thresholds, and regional maps — into do_not, reconsider, and caution for comparison. The normalized band is a pattern layer, not a replacement for the source wording; the original text is in the list below.

For planning purposes: treat do_not as a hard route block, reconsider as a serious friction signal requiring a clear reason and logistics, and caution as elevated-risk background that still demands active mitigation.

What the official warnings say

24 warning items across 9 issuers: 0 do_not, 6 reconsider, 18 caution. The 6 reconsider items define where the route pressure is highest; the 18 caution items cover everything from city-level crime to active disease outbreaks.
