Ukraine travel warnings: what official governments say right now

  • Article
  • updated 2026-05-14

Official travel advisories for Ukraine: 11 governments say do not travel, 0 say avoid non-essential travel, and 0 publish caution-level advice.

Every government in this batch rates Ukraine the same: don't go. That's 11 of 11 source votes normalized to do_not, with 13 warning items at do_not band, 1 at reconsider, and 7 at caution. HostelPunk's current posture for Ukraine is critical.

HostelPunk normalizes different national severity labels — Germany's "Reisewarnung," Canada's "Avoid all travel," Japan's "Level 4," and so on — into three comparable bands: do_not, reconsider, and caution. Ukraine has no source votes in the lower two bands.

What the official warnings say

Germany's advisory (updated 2026-05-14) cites near-daily Russian air attacks by missiles, cruise missiles, and drones across the entire country, with airspace closed and all entry and exit restricted to overland routes. Curfews are in effect in Kyiv and other cities. The closed airspace is a hard constraint, not a temporary disruption: there is no commercial flight option in or out.

Canada's advisory (updated 2026-05-05) specifically flags that personal safety is at high risk if you engage in active combat — a sign authorities are accounting for travelers entering to fight. The FCDO (updated 2026-04-02) advises against all travel to Crimea and within 50km of the Belarus border in Volyn, Rivne, and Zhytomyr regions, citing active Russian and Belarusian military and security personnel on the Belarusian side. France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued two "Dernières minutes" updates on 2026-04-07, including one titled "Frappes aériennes fréquentes sur l'ensemble du territoire ukrainien" — frequent air strikes across the entire territory.

Spain's advisory states the prohibition applies "under any circumstances while the war continues" and urges nationals already in-country to leave when commercially possible. Japan's MOFA holds Ukraine at Level 4 — its maximum, meaning evacuate and do not travel — as of 2026-01-19.

When reviewing the list below, check the updated date alongside the band. The Italian Viaggiare Sicuri caution-band entries are dated 2024-07-14, nearly two years before this article's publication date.
