Stewart Island Backpackers

Great place with lots of cooking ammenities making it very comfortable and easy. I would say the rooms look like they have not been dusted in a long time as I stayed two nights in two separate rooms and both had thick layers of dust on the bedside table. It does not take long to wet dust surfaces.

We’ve stayed in some worse, but many better. Pros - excellent location, most staff friendly, very cool common room and kitchen. Cons - One staff member (blue hair) seemed like she really didn’t want to be there, rooms smelled moldy, bathrooms/showers long overdue for refurbishment.

Great kitchen with everything you need to cook. Big entertainment space with TV, couches and books. Rooms were clean and bed was comfortable! Limited amount of showers, and higher priced than I have paid in other hostels but we did have a private room. I would definitely recommend a stay here on Stewart’s island NZ.

It is not a backpacks but a four-star hotel compared to the price!

Great hostel, a very busy hostel. Well stocked kitchen, wonderful staff. No bunk beds, that is nice. Let me borrow a torch for Kiwi hunting! Go to Ulva Island!

Well-equipped and clean communal kitchen. Rooms and bathrooms could use a few more hooks and shelving. No soap in some toilets.

The Backpackers were just great and I have one complaint only: The rooms, as well as the female shower cubicles, need A LOT MORE HOOKS FOR HANGING CLOTHING, JACKETS, TOWELS, etc. The kitchen facility is FABULOUS and there is enough stoves and microwaves - this was really my highlight. In regards to health and safety, I was wondering about the walking outside to get the rubbish thrown away. But if you have found this to be the best, then all good. Easy no hassle place to stay and helpful staff

A welcoming smile as I arrived, and was able to check in immediately to my room. Small but comfortable, towels provided. Theres a huge kitchen, that provides everything you anyone needs plus on tap boiling water. A large lounge with comfortable seats offers a spot to sit quietly As always, guests of all ages, from different countries stay, and thats the pleasure of choosing this type of accommodation. We found us a fantastic facility and a real asset to accommodation in Oban. It was comfortable for all ages to stay there. The kitchen facilities were everything that you needed. It was reasonably quiet. Most of all the management was very accommodating for us as we had overlooked booking accommodation on Rakiura. We were able to stay there for the four nights that we needed and were able to move to the available rooms easily. Thank you to all the staff involved.

The Stewart Island Backpackers was very comfortable and the kitchen/sitting areas were very well laid out and comfortable.

Beautiful place, where you can feel straight like home.The kitchen is very well equipped and big, bathrooms always clean. The staff in the hostel is super helpful and friendly. The camp site is so cute! With green grass and lilies all around. No better place to stay on Rakiura! Highly recommend if you want to feel safe, happy and taken care of.

I stayed four nights here and found the staff to be excellent in every way. They were helpful, informative and generous and I heard examples of how they thoughtfully "go the extra mile" for their returning customers. The beds were warm and comfortable, there were sufficient showers and there was no shortage of hot water. The kitchen was very well equipped. Above all, there was a central spacious, well equipped common room that by day and night, was always warm, light and inviting. Thanks!

I cannot rate this hostel highly enough. There is not one thing that I could improve. I booked a room for myself which was super comfortable , very comfortable bed, good linen, sufficient plugs and a lamp! The kitchen is the best hostel kitchen I have ever been to - had everything that you could want, and is so organised that everyone takes care of it. Lots of information- the owners/managers are very friendly and obviously care about creating a lovely place for customers. Perfect location

Great spot, very clean and good energy about the place. We brought our kids and grandparents to stay there for a couple of nights after doing a few days of tramping and everyone was very happy.

Great place. Great atmosphere - we were there for the Rakiura trail and it was a perfect location for that.
