Civic Guest House Backpackers Hostel

The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. However, the rooms were not very clean (my bed sheet had mould stains and the bathroom was dirty/mouldy), there are no curtains or bedside lights and not even plugs near the beds which is especially frustrating when you are on the top bunk. It could also be quite noisy at night if you have a room that faces onto the social area. The atmosphere in the social area felt a bit strange and made me feel a bit uneasy as a solo female traveller.

shortest stay in a hostel ever.. total of 5 mins! booked a 4 bed mixed dorm which we have done many of times! walked in to a small room and there was already 1 guest there. after 2 mins the man started to say very inappropriate things to us so we went to reception. receptionist told us “this is not the first time we have had complaints about him” and then offered no solution and said ‘he was too busy to sort it’ he refused to move the strange man so we left!

Do not stay here, it was actually disgusting. There was hair on the walls, on the floor, and in my bed. Suspicious yellow stains on my sheet. Did not feel safe, there was odd people roaming the halls. Atmosphere was more like a (mental) hospital than a hostel. Yuck.

Unfortunately we had a bad experience here. After booking at 6 bed mixed dorm for me and friend (2 females)we were “upgraded” to a 3 bed dorm with just 1 other man. Our brief encounter we had with him made us feel v uncomfortable so we decided to leave after 5 minutes. When we told the staff the issue we weren’t offered our room which we had booked. Spoke to a manager at a later date and couldn’t offer us a refund. Obviously overbooked on other rooms, and couldn’t prioritise safety :(

People living in the hostel that aren’t considerate to other travellers. The hostel puts you in a room with farm workers with their stuff spread out all over the room. Not clean at all.

L’emplacement de l’auberge est très bien proche des magasins, cependant de mon point de vue le bâtiment devrai être rénové car les sanitaires proche de ma chambre sont vieux et délabrés très difficile pour moi le premier jour pour le laver, il ni a pas de piscine, la cuisine est pas pratique et les ustensiles poêle couvert et le matériel telle que les plaques chauffante ou air fryer sont toujours très sales. Le service de navette est pas assez mis en avant car seulement 3 navett...

Old rooms, a bit dirty and hot

Staff kept walking in our room without knocking, even in the mornings. Not enough lockers for the amount of people in the room. Room was very dusty and unclean. Bathroom smelt very bad. Cockroaches in the kitchen and only one stove barley working. And the hostel was far away from the city

Wouldn’t stay again, was only here for a night and glad it was just one night! No vibe in the hostel. Seems like people live there. Staff were friendly, didn’t feel very safe either. Bugs everywhere in my room. Shower and loos need a bit of work doing to them too

Weird people and really weird atmosphere, we were happy to leave after one night! The only good thing was the woman at the reception who was really friendly and tried her best!

I was warmly welcomed, a good atmosphere, people talk easily. It is VERY CLEANED, and trust me I've done several hostel already. It should be 9/10 instead of 7/10. You can go there eyes closed.

There were pigeons and cockroaches in the kitchen.

I wouldn’t recommend. Luckily this was a stopover night, however, the hostel was extremely dirty and had an awful smell throughout the place. The facilities were ok but again couldn’t use the because of how unhygienic the place was. The vibe of this hostel made me feel unsafe and wasn’t welcoming due to long term people. The staff were friendly enough and the hostel was in an ok location . The rooms were small with no lockers. I didn’t enjoy my stay!!!

Nice hostel with ensuite onto the rooms, beds are decent and kitchen is well equipped. The hostel can be a bit noisy at night time and there are some long term residents in rooms but everyone is friendly

I had a great time here. The place is super white and clean, and the pool is lovely too. The kitchen area was reasonably clean with lots of activities and things to do. The room was very well air conditioned, although I could have done with a blanket! The only negative thing I have to say is that there must have been a good few mosquitoes roaming around the reception area, because I got bitten a lot whilst having my tea!

The best hostel in Townsville by far!

Weird people and really weird atmosphere, we were happy to leave after one night! The only good thing was the woman at the reception who was really friendly and tried her best!

I had the private room with en-suite and it was so nice after numerous shared hostel rooms. Lovely little room, quite basic but had your own fridge and was lovely and light. The hostel was quite quiet during the day, unfortunately could be quite loud at night and the doors were not great at sound proofing. However a nice hostel to stay in before going to Magnetic island.

Enjoyed our stay, not a very social hostel but was still friendly

Really lovely staff, very helpful. Nice hostel with good facilities and pool access

The hostel itself was fine, but in the weeks I’ve been in Australia I’ve never slept on such an awful mattress. I could feel the individual iron springs digging in my back, I honestly debated sleeping on the floor instead.

Wasn’t too bad. Had a private room and was nice, bathrooms okay but the shower I had was barely a trickle and extremely cold even on high heat. Kitchen was spacious and rooftop area has a lovely view
