The Attic Backpackers

I stayed in the Attic for a few nights at the start of my NZ trip. Unfortunately, I forgot my Liverpool football shirt at the hostel - it was left in the bathroom. When I reached my next location (and when I realised that I had left the shirt behind) I rang up the attic. They said that they had found the shirt (worth £80/160 NZD) but because it had been more than 3 days they had put it in a “free bin”. There was no air conditioning, and the room was unbearably hot. Dust covered nearly every surface, and the cleanliness was far below acceptable standards. I even experienced health issues due to the conditions (dust). This was a deeply disappointing stay, and I will not be returning.

i believe i was racial judged by the manager Chris. when i was standing in the hallway and reading the wall board. he almost ran to me and asked, if i am a guest, i said yes, then he asked my name, i mentioned my name. then he tried to make some small talk, and asked which room i am in? i showed my key and opened the room. then he believed i am a guest. i understand, i was the only dark skin person in hostel. but there are lot of other way to verify, looks like it happened only to me.

The hostel has very strange cleaning schedules - almost like they don't want anyone using the kitchen in the morning (10am) to save on energy costs. We were also promptly kicked out of the hostel after checkout time - we've not had this treatment in any other hostel in Auckland. Maybe come to this hostel if you like being treated like a child.

Good location and boards with suggestions on the walls, but no storage lockers or outlets by the beds.

Too noisy out of the window , too hot with only one floor fan in the room in the middle of summer , bed on the up bunk is like in a steamy room.

This hostel absolutely stinks. Literally smells so so bad. It’s basic and not worth the extortionate prices they’re charging. The bed wasn’t very comfortable, had back pain after two nights. No air con, bad ventilation. Kitchen is decent. Bathrooms fine though shower heads could deff do with being updated. Location is great but a lot of other hostels in Auckland are very central. Not much atmosphere. Would not return.

I was really looking forward to staying at the hostel but due to Auckland flooding and airline cancellations I was unable to stay. I contacted the staff about my inability to enter the country. The staff only replied after repeated emails to them and said they saw no problem with the airport. The staff had no concern for my concerns and did not reply to my request to speak with someone who could address my situation. It was dirty. Kitchen had cockroaches and the staff was very unhelpful with any task given to. We arrived late due to flight delays and called in advance. The guy on the phone told us he will send us a Code. Nothing recieved, had to stay outside in the middle of the Night. Furthermore we had to use the wifi because of lost luggage half an hour after the check out. The receptionist told us to leave immediately, since we are no longer guests.

The Attic is well located for newly arriving backpackers, but the hostel wasn't really clean or tidy. The atmosphere is not pleasant, with few space to breathe. Unfortunately the area was also a lot under construction, which makes it hard having some quite all day long. It feels like you're supposed to stay outside of the place all day long.

Lovely place to stay in the centre of Auckland. They have a really big and well resourced kitchen and loads of places just to chill around the hostel, making a really nice atmosphere.

Great Hostel ! The Staff, as well as the kitchen, the bathroom and the dorms were absolutely great ! I’m definitely coming back :)

Au top, super bien situé, confortable et le personnel est sympa. L'ambiance est agréable et la cuisine très bien équipée (juste des poêles qui accrochent mais ça c'est partout comme ça).

Everyone there is there to live as you’d probably of guessed, room had a bit of a whiff even with the windows open constantly but what can you expect with 12 people in there, kitchen and bathroom facilities good all in all, would prob stay again, good location near bus stop

The hostel should really do a better job matching roommates. I was the only girl in a mixed dorm for both nights I stayed here and was put with several much older men (at least 40+, some 60+). They also slept in their underwear and there are no curtains, so it was really uncomfortable and there were no rooms for me to switch to. Overall facilities are fine but it felt more like a retirement community than a hostel. Someone even washed their dentures in the sink one day. I wouldn’t stay again.

Good central hostel in Auckland, staff are friendly. The kitchen is good and the facilities are very clean, not the most social hostel but still a nice vibe

It was perfect for the first days in Auckland. Bathrooms were very clean, big kitchen and good social atmosphere

Staff kicked A**.. hard working and friendly. I love it’s all on ONE FLOOR! Men’s bathroom HUGE, well lit and plenty of showers & toilets. (Left over soaps to use) Kitchen, well layed out. (& again, various condiments leftover). Community fridges Bedroom. Mattresses a bit metal springs. No interior Luggage lockers. Gym lockers in hall to use. Overall, nice spot, though hard to find! Nice outdoor seating area, huge kitchen with good base pantry that visitors can use, and clean bathrooms. The rooms didn't auto-lock and roommates usually didn't bother to lock them so if that would bother you, this may not be the spot for you. But overall I felt very safe. Great book collection too!

Amazing time with great people! Only complaint is that it got pretty hot in the room at night with no AC, but it was survivable

there were a lot of people staying long term and not there to socialise compared to other hostels but very clean and nice otherwise!

Probably the best hostel in Auckland. I stayed here twice and had a great experience. Perfect location, clean, and very well organized. It’s a bit expensive, mainly because the kitchen equipment is quite old, but otherwise it’s worth every dollar.
