Worst sleep I got in 8 months traveling through asia. The walls are thin. Everyday at 2/3am people were yelling in the halls and bathroom. Everyone in my room was woken up at least once daily. Someone projectile vomit in one of the rooms. No room is quiet. No curtains. You can feel every movement of your bunkmate on the metal beds. Breakfast is toast and spread. Stay somewhere else if you want to sleep.
Great vibe, perfect location, cool building, fun & helpful volunteers! BUT - Mice !!!!! At least have some humane traps or a cat. They’re so loud at night, and a guy in my dorm, literally found one in his bed :( - No privacy curtains. For £9 a night, most travellers would expect this - pay to use pool & football tables. I haven’t come across a hostel yet that does this! - Cleaner threw away my shampoo which i accidentally left in the shower (found in toilet bin), was frustrating
Very unprofessional and dirty. It’s like slab city. Ran by backpackers who were openly talking about use from their nights out. Avoid.
There is no system of ventilation for the sleeping area and there are no windows that can be opened, therefore even the hallway reeks of mold, not to talk about the rooms. I have never smelled anything like it in my life. The bathrooms are very dirty and I found a cockroach in the shower (not the one facing the balcony but the one inside). The hostel is entirely run by volunteers that are unable to help with anything that is not related to the hostel like booking transportation. Location is nice
Staff were nice and location good but it was way too noisy when I stayed. The room walls are extra thin and you can hear everything. People slamming doors at 3am and laughing outside your room. Also extremely hot in common area. Wouldn’t stay here again sadly.
Chargers in room not working Couple sharing the single bunk below me and staying in same bed at night and also during the day so made it awkward for us when we were in the room despite staff being aware and doing nothing about it
it seems to be a party hostel, and they don’t say that, I had 2 bad nights where the ppl just came at 3am drunk and screaming, jumping in the room, also having s&x, and one of the girl actually worked there, so there’s no one to complain about it, as she was having fun of it. shame!
Don’t stay here. Half the people who stay here ‘volunteer’ here and ignore the guests. they’re incapable of doing their jobs, are rude and to top it off they have s*x with guests in the middle of the day in the dorms. I asked the staff simple questions and was ignored, with the exception of the blonde English girl. Everyone else was quite horrible. Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. It’s not clean and it stinks of gas. People run around the corridors at 3am drunk and screaming....
-The front door is very small and hard to find as there is no sign or its name in front, only the big sign on the building, I need to ask the lady next door to locate the place. -Location is not the same as shown in hostel ad, totally different. Owner said they relocated. Not really clean place, all furniture, beds are not built-in, everything looks messy unorganized. -Light on the bed is too bright with no shade that disturbs other people. -Noise from clubs -Friendly staff/good best locatio...

Lovely staff who were very helpful. Air con wasn’t fully working on day 1 and as soon as they noticed they made sure to quickly fix. Includes free toast breakfast with many spreads as well as free cold water refill. There was also an AC room in the day to chill if hot; a feature we have found lacking in other hostels. In addition to a table football game and pool table in the social area. Only downside would be no curtains on the beds.
Super nettes hostel mit guter Lage in Georgetown, die volunteers waren alle sehr gut drauf. Klare Empfehlung
I had an amazing stay there! The perfect mix of social, comfort and good vibes, I’d recommend to anyone going to stay in Georgetown
Great hostel! we had a great stay, free breakfast and tea/coffee all day was amazing! Good location - everything is pretty much in walking distance apart from penang hill and a few temples which you can grab to. Rooms were clean but no curtains, showers were great - hot water! and staff were very helpful when our AC stopped working, they fixed it quickly and offered us a fan for the meantime!
Good location and very friendly staff. I was the only female in a dorm with just men and one was behaving weirdly and made me feel uncomfortable. Because there is no curtains no privacy in the beds. I left after 1 night. Staff was so nice and helpful and offered me a refund. Cannot fully give my opinion as i was not there for long. Overall atmosphere seemed very nice and friendly
Awesome hostel with great vibes!! No AC in the common area so gets a bit hot but the social atmosphere makes up for it. Not overly party-focused but in a good way, hangouts every night and free activities like trivia and pool tournaments. They still host pub crawls which are free and fun though! Only drawback is the lack of curtains and AC in the bunks during the day
A hostel run by ever changing volunteers, the vibe is very fun and relaxed, if not lacking an actual staff member. The hostel has a range of rooms (with no curtains) and plenty of social spaces, as well as fantastic daily social events, making the stay very memorable and fun overall.
This hostel was super friendly. I loved hanging out with everyone I met here. Great variety in activities. Not party vibes which is perfect for me
Really loved my stay here , the vibe was amazing . The only little point would be that there is no curtains on the bed but that’s not the worst thing in the world
Mega Hostel!
Loved this hostel to bits!! Met some amazing friends here. Such a social vibe without it being too party (though u could def party if you wanted to) Yes the lack of curtains was a bummer but it was ok. Showers and facilities were very average but the fun I had makes up for this!
great hostel!! the staff was really nice and the location was super central. With all the activities they had it was very social and I met some great people there. Definitely recommend!!
Had a great stay here, a very social hostel and they host activities every day.
Had a great stay at HOJ! The vibe was great - lots of amazing people. The common areas are great and make the hostel quite social, events every night too. Only downside is the doors to the dorm shut loudly and the walls/floors are thin so it can be noisy at times.
Great place to stay if you want to explore the old town, party at backpacker bars and meet a bunch of people. The hostel is located in a heritage building but has modern security. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and there is always an activity to do everyday. The free breakfast is pretty good, and the bunks are comfortable. The lockers are big enough for a medium sized backpack. The location is a major advantage. It is right on Chulia Street where you can get local street food, mer...
Sound as a pound
Weird atmosphere when I was there - seemed like there were more volunteers than guests and the volunteers were quite cliquey/not welcoming. Free breakfast but it’s basic (toast). Room was ok, but didn’t have a window
Really nice little hostel with an amazing manager and lovely volunteers that will make you feel at home 🤗. It's clean, you have some great areas to chill and socialise. If you want to have some time for yourself, the rooms are quiet. A very wholesome place 🤗
Great stay at this social hostel in Penang! I arrived late for check-in, but the staff gave me clear and easy self-check-in instructions, which made everything smooth. Even though I checked in late, they were still very nice and helpful. The hostel has a great social atmosphere — easy to meet other travelers. Downstairs, there are lots of street food options, and the hostel also organizes many fun night activities. Highly recommend for solo travelers!
