Very disappointing stay. Staff were unhelpful and gave little to no information about tours beyond price and time. We were always picked up last, leaving us stuck in tiny, uncomfortable seats at the back of the bus (and I’m only 155cm). Tours were badly organised, ran far too long, and were entirely in Spanish without warning, causing us to miss part of one trip. Extra deposits required for basics like keys and towels. Would not recommend.
Puerta Vieja is a very nice hostel if you want to meet people. However, I think they have a serious problem with bed bugs. I’ve heard from multiple guests that they got bites and saw some bugs crawling on their bed. They let the people switch rooms, but if they’re not fixing the problem thoroughly, the bed bugs will keep coming. The staff could be a bit more friendlier. Their English wasn’t always as good either, making it difficult to understand each other.
This hostel has a few positives, but my stay was disappointing. They refused to store backpacks after checkout for some hours even when I offered to pay, and some staff were rude aside from Temo. Cleanliness was poor. A shower was left in a filthy state and, despite reporting it, it took most of the day to be cleaned. I won’t be coming back.
el mexicano que nos hizo el check out un maleducado! super rudo! por favor estén atentos al personal.
The hostel itself was very nice, social and activities. If you're solo traveling, great place to meet people. However the private room wasn't worth the money. It was cold, didn't have curtains and was in a seperate building. the shower was hot but the water wasnt hot enough to run a bath.
Private room COMPLETELY full of mold. Said it to the reception Before the first night and nothing happened for the whole stay although we tried everything to change. They just didnt care (just Alex the blond Girl at the reception) and didnt do anything against it. The mold was so bad that you could smell it in the whole room. Got sick of the food too. At all not a good stay and the staff not really friendly (just 2 of them).. Just Book a Dorm and not a private, it was horrible.
Unfortunately I had a very unpleasant experience with reception. I paid 200 pesos for a 50-peso breakfast and stepped away briefly. When I returned, the receptionists (Oliver and Philippe) insisted I hadn’t paid the 200 pesos. Even after reviewing the security footage and seeing I was telling the truth, they continued to deny it before eventually returning my money. No apology was offered, even when I directly asked for one. The lack of accountability and customer care was really disappointing...
Don’t Be Fooled by the Reviews or the Aesthetic This Place Is a Joke Don’t let the pretty photos or glowing reviews trick you this hostel is all hype and zero heart. Beneath the trendy decor is a cold, unwelcoming place run by staff who act like guests are an inconvenience. From the moment you walk in, the attitude is clear: you’re not welcome. No greeting, no smile just indifference. The woman on the evenin on the evening shift and the guy in the morning couldn’t be bothered
Really dirt. A lot of mold. Dirty and broken furniture. Many people got sick from the food they served. Bed bugs in many beds.
The hostel is nice and all, but be very cautious when eating the food. Countless guests have experienced stomach issues (likely food poisoning). The hostel frequently posts alerts in their WhatsApp group about the risks of eating street food or drinking local water, but it’s clearly an attempt to divert attention from the fact that their own food is making people sick. It can’t be a coincidence when 10+ guests get ill. As a health professional, they seriously need to take responsibility.

Just a great hostel!
The facilities are amazing, it's always clean and comfortable. There is a gym, ping pong table, wonderful Tereza and outdoor area, temazcal (highly recommend), lots of bathrooms and showers. They give free coffee and tea every morning and offer amazing breakfast and dinner. They have events on a daily basis and there is a great social atmosphere at the bar and dining area. Highly recommend.

10/10 experience, had a lovely time here and met so many amazing new people, the food is delicious and the staff are lovely, definitely worth the stay. ☺️☺️
Top hostel, sehr gute Atmosphäre
I loved my stay at Puerta Vieja!! The hostel an amazing place to meet new people and the events they have every day are seriously something you shouldn’t miss out on! It is such a beautiful space and the staff members are some of the nicest people ever :) I really wish I could have stayed longer but I’m sure I will come back 🫶🏻
er werd heel lastig gedaan over eerder inchecken
Great Times Greta Cocktails Good Activity Great Volunteers. Overall just a great stay
Great place!
Avoid this place, there are BED BUGS in multiple dorms!! In the room I was checked into, a girl woke up covered in bites. Management handles this very poorly and it seems to be an ongoing issue (based on prior complaints I wasn’t aware of). They expected me to pay extra for a private room just to feel safe. I ended up leaving. For your own peace of mind, stay away!
It is very good and social, staff are lovely and the dinners good as you meet people, not very filling portions though and there is a vegan breakfast but not a vegan dinner - other than that still really good as far as as hostel food goes! And great prices for cocktails and beers I couldn’t believe how cheap it was. Only thing is Theres a construction site next door which starts at 4 in the morning!!! So not great if you value your sleep. Private rooms are nice
Can confirm bedbugs are an issue currently. Besides this I booked a dorm bed for the night before I arrived at 7.30am from the night bus on purpose so I could shower and have a nap, however my bed was not made? So I had to nap on the lounge until lunch time when someone made it. Not only that but they didn’t even give me a tour of the hostel for where to find anything. The social atmosphere was good but operationally this place needs to pick up its game.
One of the best hostels we stayed at on our trip through central america. Rooms are very cheap but still really really nice! Shared dinner every night for a price that feels like a steal. Free cocktails twice a week and stuff going on every night! Highly recommend!
