Zzz Ijen Hostel

Booked the private room for resting before Ijen hike. Room was ok, but had no AC (even though it said in the description it had) and was boiling hot during the day. In the night, a cloud of mosquitos got into the room, so not a very good place to rest

I stayed at the Zzz in Malang and was expecting a similar experience but this hostel was older and much dirtier. The rooms don’t all have AC so be careful when booking if you want it (and you will). My room had brown stains on the walls, an uncomfortable bed, an outlet that didn’t work, and was hot/cramped. There is also no real place to socialize, so you’re kind of forced to stay in your room. Very friendly and helpful staff! The hostel is not very nice. Small shared room with no curtains and windows without panes. There is also a very loud prayer speaker right next to the establishment.

Honestly, this place just gets it. I rolled in at 1 AM from the ferry and the night guy was still smiling, handed me a key, and basically said "sleep first, paperwork later." That vibe carries through everything. The dorm isn't trying to be fancy but it's super clean, the AC is frosty, and the pillows are fluffy. Met a bunch of solo travellers on the rooftop just vibing and suddenly it was 2 AM again lol. If you're doing Ijen, just book here and let them sort everything. No brainer.

What a beautiful surprise this hostel was. The design is so thoughtfully done, blending modern minimalist style with traditional Javanese woodwork. Quiet, clean, and strategically located near the ferry to Bali. The owner sat with me and explained the local ferry schedule in detail, saving me confusion. Common kitchen has a nice view of the rice fields. I think adding a book exchange shelf would enhance the social vibe.

I just from Malang and i'm direct to Banyuwangi, you know i loved the murals painted on every wall local artists, not just generic quotes, this is medicine for my long trip. The common room has bean bags and a TV but nobody uses it because everyone's outside chatting. They organized a group trip to the blue fire, cheaper than going solo. Showers have warm water consistently. Only con: no elevator and rooms on third floor but staff helped with bags.

For less than eight dollars, I got a clean bed, strong WiFi, and a nice rooftop to watch sunset. The locker was big enough for my 40L backpack. What surprised me was the free drinking water refill saved me buying plastic bottles. Location is near the bus terminal, not the tourist centre, but that made it more authentic. The owner helped me rent a scooter for cheap. Basic but honest. I recommend for strict budget travelers.

The staff, especially Aurora, were very helpful and accommodating to my complicated logistics and went above and beyond to make sure I had a pleasant stay.

The guy at reception remembered my name from the moment I checked in. He suggested a local fried chicken spot that wasn’t on Google Maps, and it was delicious. When my train got delayed, he let me stay in the lobby without extra charge. Bed had thick mattress, not like typical hostel sponges. Location is near the main road but tucked inside an alley so it’s peaceful. Small touches like free tea and coffee made my stay comfortable.

The courtyard with fairy lights drew everyone together at dusk. My dorm bed had a thick privacy curtain and a perfect fan angle. The owner handed me a breakfast box at 2 AM without me asking, then lent me a spare mask when mine broke.

We had a great time at Zzz hostel and would highly recommend. The team looked after us and were on hand to help with all of your requests, including express laundry and motorbike rental. The rooms were very clean and comfy. There was a great atmosphere at the hostel, with all the staff joining us in having fun in the chill out areas. Special mention for Aurora who took extra special care of us. 10/10

I had a really great stay at the Hostel! The atmosphere was super relaxed and welcoming, and everything was clean. Really great hostel, very homely with a great atmosphere to meet and connect with new people. All the staff are lovely and super accommodating and helpful. You’ll arrive as a guest and leave as a friend. Couldn’t recommend this place enough!
