YHA Nelson Backpackers

The manager gives you the feeling that he is somewhat friendly out of compulsion, but as soon as you are seen in the hostel after 11am, there is grumbling. There are no power sockets by the bed or anything to put down. I wanted to extend my stay by 3 nights from Sunday to Wednesday, but instead I had to pay until Thursday despite asking several times. The owner is really strict and rude. They also want money for so many things, like Wi-Fi or to store your bags. They also kick you out at 11am, even if you just want to sit in the dining area for a bit, until your bus is leaving.

Terrible experience. Don’t waste money!! When I originally checked in I thought the man at the front (I think his name is Royce) was kind and helpful, however don’t let his smile fool you. My friend was not able to stay at the YHA due to limited availability, and was staying at another hostel. She ran into an issue where she needed help, so she came to the lobby of the YHA to find me and get help. Equitment in kitchen is worn down. Bunk bed was rather shaky and pillow a sad, flad something. Could only find two toilettes and two showers for the whole floor. Although I stayed in a 6 bunk bed room there was also a person sleeping on the couch. In genral weird atmosphere. Stayed only for a night for trail tranfer and choose another (much better) hostel when I came back from the trail.

next level capitalism, paying for wifi. Smelly rooms, bad ventilation. Not what YHA stands for. The only good was the free sauna

Day rate to pay once you have checked out. we paid a $12.50 per person day rate to use facilities after 11am 5. Passive aggressive manager. 6. Have to pay for lockers that are not very secure 7. Guard on bed broke and spoke to management and they did not do anything or really care. All the beds in the room were on last legs

This hostel has a great location and staff were helpful. The kitchen was well stocked and the bathrooms were good and always clean. However, I was quite disappointed at the fact you have to pay for wifi. Seems very old fashioned, especially for travellers in a budget hostel, and it says in the description that there's unlimited WiFi, which is not true!! The beds were not the best and the room did feel quite stuffy.

Die Gemeinschaftsräume waren super. Das Zimmer selbst hatte nur normale Betten, sodass leider der eigene kleine Bereich etwas gefehlt hat

If you want to wake up early to have a breakfast and enjoy your day, this is not the place for you, the kitchen only opens at 7h40 Am, so if you booked a activity or have a appointment in the morning, it’s better to not stay in this place

Solide Unterkunft für eine Nacht, das Personal gibt einem etwas strange Vibes. Sowohl beim Checkin als auch später beim reingehen hatte ich das Gefühl, wie ein Verdächtiger behandelt zu werden. Räume und Betten sind okay, der Gemeinschaftsraum und die Küche bieten viel Platz, wirklich gemütlich ist das Ganze aber nicht. Von den vier Hostels, die ich in meinen Aufenthalten in Nelson besucht habe, ist das hier Platz 4. Nicht schlecht, aber kein Ort an dem ich mehrere Nächte bleiben wollen ...

Sehr schönes Hostel, tolle Einrichtungen, sowohl Küche als auch Badezimmer. Besonders herausgestochen hat das freundliche und überaus hilfreiche Personal. Immer ansprechbar und mit guten Tipps! Wir kommen gerne wieder.

The hostel was okay. It had two big kitchen which could be a bit cleaner. The room was very spacious but the beds were a bit shaky. It wasn't a really social atmosphere and you only get one GB free wifi which also didn't quite worked. However the hostel was totaly alright for a few nights.

Big kitchen/diner, common room to lounge in too. Also if you’ve got a car, there’s a big parking lot right outside for you to use so very convenient. Wouldn’t say it’s very social but everything else was top tier

This hostel really deserves a 10. The staff are amazing, the rooms are very clean, the doors close quietly in the dorms, there are enough showers and toilets, the kitchen is awesome, and the lounge area is chill.

Really good hostel. Would usually not book because of the ratings, but was one of the cleanest hostels I‘ve stayed in NZ. Loved the single room (had a window, enough space, comfy bed). Kitchen & bathrooms were clean, as they had proper professionals doing the cleaning, not just young travelers (like in so many other NZ hostels). Loved it!

Good location, budget friendly and would recommend but room for improvement. Eg don’t advertise a 7 bed dorm as a 6 bed dorm and fix the faucets in the kitchen as then kept dripping no matter how hard you tried to twist which was a bit ironic as there are posters about saving water on the walls

Great location, the staff is very helpful and they have a lot of information about tours and what to do in Nelson. Common areas are very nice.

Its a very big hostel. Manymany people, but enough space for everyone. Theres a nice chill room. The kitchens and bathrooms were exceptionally clean. Liked it here!

Hostel très bien organisé, propre et confortable. Le personnel est avenant et fort agréable. L'emplacement central de l'établissement est vraiment très pratique. J'y reviendrai avec plaisir!

Enjoyed my stay here. The place is clean and tidy, the facilities are great, and the rooms are a decent size. It’s super central so really easy to get around town. The staff were all really friendly and made me feel so welcome every time I saw them. The only downside was that the atmosphere was a bit flat. Other than that, it was great :)

hostel was nice! everythings clean and staff is friendly. location is good too. wifi is a bit annoying unfortunately. you only get 1 gb for free per day, you can buy unlimited for 24 hours for 2$. pretty sure they advertise having free wifi so thats a bit misleading!
