Kalunay Hostel

- En la habitación doble que estuve solo estaba la cama que era super incómoda. Colchón fino de muelles que se clavaban. Olor a cloaca dentro de la habitación pegada al baño. Paredes de papel que se oía absolutamente todo. Baño sucio y con las tuberías continuamente atascadas.

+ The volunteers seemed decent.

- Fraud and terrible management. I had planned to stay 8 nights at this place. When it came time to pay, they told me they use a completely independent exchange rate, different from what banks and Google use. I wanted to pay in the local currency. Before arriving I went to the bank to exchange my money into colones, and when I tried to pay, they wanted to charge me an extra $20 just for having converted the currency. When I asked why they were charging me more, they said it was because they use a different exchange rate (not even the bank’s rate). I had already exchanged my money, and the staff’s response was that it was my mistake for changing the currency because they wanted dollars. We spoke to the owner and received the same response. All of this could easily be avoided if they accepted card payments, but they don’t (if they accepted cards, they wouldn’t be able to run this scam). After this, we were discriminated against for being Mexican. They said Mexicans steal and asked why I was complaining when “in Mexico they steal from you just for thinking” (an awful response from management, especially when trying to justify an illegal act). My wife was ignored and not spoken to at all, as if this were a sexist place where they only communicate with men. I have already filed a report with Booking, and over the phone they told me that what this place is doing not only goes against Booking’s policies but is also illegal, and that they would file a formal report against the establishment. If you plan to stay here, be prepared to pay more and receive poor service.

+ - well equipped kitchen - breakffast was ok (some eggs, toast, coffee and fruit)

- - Wifi was not working our whole stay - No moscito nets above the bed or in front of windows - No ac - very small rooms

+ La cama era comoda, no estaba lejos del dentro del pueblo y tiene un pequeño parking donde pudimos dejar el coche

- La habitación era pequeña, no tenia nada para dejar las cosas, solo una mesilla en malas condiciones. Olia fuertemente a cloro. Solo se puede pagar en efectivo, solo en usd o colonos y ellos te hacen su propio cambio de usd a colonos, por lo que te sale mas caro del precio indicado. Desayuno empieza muy tarde, a las 7.30am mas el rato que tardan hasta que te lo preparen…es muy básico pero pasable. No dan toallas. No recomendable.

+ Staff accogliente, spazio comune molto carino.

- Impossibile dormire. Non c’è aria condizionata ma ventilatori molto ma molto rumorosi. I bagni sarebbero da modernizzare.

+ Le jardin et le space comun sont agréables

- WiFi ne funcionne pas Il y a beaucoup des choses à réparer et entretenir

+ Die Küche und der Aufenthaltsraum waren sehr schön und sauber.

- Unser Zimmer war an den Wänden sehr dreckig und schimmelig und es gab keinerlei Möglichkeit, Dinge aufzuhängen oder abzulegen (nur einen kleinen Nachttisch), auch nicht im Gemeinschaftsbad. Auch die Kissen waren (unter dem Überzug) schwarz vor Schimmel! Zudem können wir das Hostel für vegane Personen nicht empfehlen, da keine alternativen Optionen angeboten oder ermöglicht werden.

+ The hostel is spacious and defenitely has a beautiful, well-equipped kitchen. That's a big plus. The room was nice too, with a comfortable mattress and a fan.

- Unfortunately, the staff seems to lack an understanding of service orientation. During check-in, the lady was not very welcoming; she simply performed her duties without any friendliness. Checkout was even more disappointing with the reception lady wearing a cap, as entering the reception area felt like I was interrupting a conversation she had with a colleague. I certainly didn't feel welcomed since her attitude was rude, and she rushed through the checkout process. A simple inquiry about my stay would have been nice and appreciated. I also encountered an issue with my backpack because the zipper broke, so I asked her for advice. However, she showed no empathy for my situation. Fortunately, a kind woman (who also stayed in the hostel) helped me fix it, and the reception lady walked by several times without acknowledging the struggle and showing any form of happiness towards me. Additionally, I found the bathroom disappointing; there was no space to place my clothes, and it was often dirty and filled with hair.

+ The garden with lounge chairs is nice. Because you are at the edge of town we saw lots of howler monkeys in the trees surrounding the hostel. Its nice that there is free filtered water.

- The room was very humid (which is understandable in costa rica), however there was mold on the walls, on the bed sheets and on the fan. There are no shelves or hooks to put/hang your stuff, so it's on the humid floor.. The shared bathroom was dated and became very dirty, since you have to share it with the dorm and one other double room. It was not cleaned regularly. They serve breakfast from 7, however, we never received it before 8 (so keep that in mind when you are in a rush). The breakfast is fine, but basic and the same every morning, scrambled eggs, toast and a piece of fruit. The location is at the edge of town, which is fine, but you have to walk some dark streets to get there.

+ L’emplacement un peu reculé du centre fait de l’hostel un endroit calme et reposant. La cuisine tout équipée est très appréciable. Le parking gratuit est un plus. Il y a aussi un accès à une piscine d’un hostel voisin.

- Nous étions dans une chambre double, elle est assez petite et aucun rangement à l’intérieur de la chambre n’est disponible, ni de fil pour étendre des affaires mouillées. Le literie était assez humide, voir moisi. Les sanitaires sont ok mais manquait de temps à autre de papier toilette et de propreté. Petit déjeuner sommaire (œuf brouillé, toast et quelques morceaux de fruits).

+ Es un poco más lejos del centro que otros alojamientos pero igual se puede ir caminando, rico desayuno! Las instalaciones están bien para el precio

- La que atendía en recepción solo hablaba inglés. Se supone que se habla español, más allá de que nos pudimos comunicar igual es increíble que pongan a alguien que solo sabe inglés

- Era mi primera vez en un hostel y no sabíamos muchas cosas y no nos explicaron

+ La experiencia en hostel kalunay fue magnífica. El personal muy amable, el dueño nos ayudó mucho con un problema personal que tuvimos. Nos sentimos cuidadas en todo momento. Las instalaciones muy bien, incluso están remodelando y todo se ve muy moderno y lindo. Limpieza ok! El desayuno rico y completo. El espacio común re cómodo y la cocina bien equipada.

- Por la humedad de Puerto Viejo sugiero aire acondicionado en todas las habitaciones. Pero el ventilador que teníamos funcionaba muy bien, no tuvimos calor Solo que el aire quita la humedad y para dormir está bueno.

+ La ubicación, alejado del ruido del centro, las instalaciones muy cómodas, todo limpio y buena atención.

- Protège de la cuisine partagé + de la salle de bain avec les autre utilisateur (personne complètement bourré, gémissant)

+ Sehr ruhiger vibe, toller außenbereich mit großer Außenküche, super Lage.

- Die Viererzimmer sind schon ziemlich klein und es gibt nicht so viel Platz, um seine Sachen zu verstauen

+ L'area comune molto carina ed attrezzata.

- Camere troppo piccole per 4 persone.

+ Brand new kitchen

- Toilet and shower.. also need new towels
