We ended staying for six days because it was inconvenient for us to find another place. We wouldn't recommend this place to anyone . It's overpriced for what you get, rooms, bathrooms are dirty, moldy and smelly, and we couldn't get access to our wardrobes. It doesn't look like the pictures, the place clearly has seen better days. The kitchen is smelly and broken, and doesn't have any basic stuff like oil. The security is poor, and we payed w cash without receipts. The stay is a health hazard
I spent only the night in the property, so I tried not be unfair with the ratings. Despite of a good location, the hostel itself just looked weird. The bathrooms were very messy, there were people (clearly not guests) partying ALL night in the property (which felt unsafe), communication with the staff was confusing upon arrival, the room did not have a proper power outlet (luck I had my own charger)... I know it was cheap, but there are very basic things that should be taken care of for guests.
It‘s needs maintance - all over. Window glasses are broken, bathrooms are not in a good shape; pool is dirty an the floor has holes. Cockroach are big and seen- they have a good life under the floor with holes. So we had a nice safari experience with them in door- finally we found them on our luggage in the car. Please check it by yourself, if you really want to keep them in your offers. It’s not fair to other people to keep them in the recommendations.
When we arrived, there was a power cut (as often happens in South Africa), so they couldn't open the door and didn't realize we'd made a reservation when we spoke to them on the phone. We didn't go that evening. We went back without booking. We were offered a room where the air comes through a door and the wifi doesn't work because we're in another building. It's not very clean. We can't plug our phones into universal sockets, only local ones. Not very practical when you're a tourist. Very littl...
Very bad guest house with bag bags on the beds, very un clean….just don’t!!!
The furnishings of the entire hostel were old and gave a dingy impression. The first room smelled damp and musty. The bed linen was clean but stained all over. In the second room, the door lock was only loosely fixed (screws had come loose) and the wood of the frame seemed to have come off (on purpose). The sheets smelled of sweat and musty. There was also a large group of men staying there (supposedly construction workers, constant gawking with a clear offer from one of the men included).
Before Covid this probably was a wonderful place. Place got rundown, no travellers staying there but place is full of locals who live there. There is no backpackers atmosphere anymore. Facilities are dirty. We booked online and they even looked surprised someone booked. It needs work to get back in too old glory.
Möbel müssten mal ausgewächselt werden. Sauberkeit naja, oder bad müsste mind renoviert werden. Ich würde da nicht übernachten, habe mich nicht wohl gefühlt
They need to update their photos on here as it is not what it looks like. Place was dirty and kitchen felt unhygienic, food left out and flies everywhere. Didn’t end up staying here as it wasn’t what it said it would be. Bit disappointing because it used to be a really good place to stay. Only positive was the location but that’s it.

Friendly staff. Good location to chillout and safe place. Most guests are local workers.

Nice 90s surfer tribal vibe and swimming pool. Lost my towel so they lent me one. Owner also upgraded me to a single room and gave me good advise on where to go. Close to Florida road and the windermere shopping center. Basic but good facilities and spacious hostel.
Patrick was understanding and helpful
Tekweni Backpackers Hostel is one of my favourite hostels i’ve ever stayed in! First, it has a great location, right on Florida road which is the main (and safe) bar and party strip in Durban. The hostel itself has a cosy atmosphere with all the facilities if you want to save some money and cook your own food. Ernest was a really friendly guy (he taught me my first Zulu words) who unexpectedly gave me a private room even though I paid a dorm room price. But the greatest part of the place i...

Tekweni backpackers hostel is the real deal in Durban. Perfect location just off Florida road, the hostel is the perfect base to discover Durban. Cosy, clean, budget, and with friendly staff is the perfect choice. Defenetly recommended

Very friendly and helpful staff a nice and safe location a lot of restaurants and bars nearby very organized
The staff was super helpful regarding literally anything I asked and extremely responsive. i got a room upgrade and was sleeping in a sungle room unstead of a dorm. generally there werent many people to mingle with tho.
Excellent
Great location and nice staff.
Fantastic location along Florida Road, a 25-30 minute walk to the ocean boardwalk. Great value for money. Very friendly staff and two lovely cats stay at the property. I chose a private room as the price was good, R400 per night and I had use of a semi-private bathroom, kitchenette, and fridge. Be prepared with cash upon departure as they don’t accept card payments. Bring your own toiletries and towels. The front door is always locked and the car gate is open during the day but locked at night...
Super unclean, pretty rotten furniture and filthy beds. Luckily we stayed just one night.
Thank you Tekweni staff for a fantastic stay. I enjoyed it so much I extended a little longer. Special shout out to the owner who was very helpful with my stay in Durban and next stops. Hostel is in a great location and very close to good bars and restaurants. I’ll be returning again at the end of my SA adventure before heading home. Cheers Tekweni!
I booked this spot last-minute for a friend. He enjoyed it so much he went back twice. Warm atmosphere, very kind staff, and awesome owner. It's a great hostel in a terrific locale in Durban--hard to find a decent spot in this neighborhood for such good value.

Didn't have the best stay here unfortunately. The room was a bit boring, literally a big space with 2 single beds in the corner and a mattress. The window couldn't be closed, the curtains let through a lot of light, so it was noisy and very bright early in the morning. There were cockroaches in the room and on the couches in the living room and there was a party with locals going on until late in the evening so I couldn't sleep. I also couldn't really figure out who was working there and who was...
The staff and the owner were amazing. The property does need some upkeep. The guest was super loud and noisy, it was hard to go to sleep, and I was woken up every day 5am by the other guest. It was a party being thrown on the property during my stay.
