Shelter Hostel Malang

+ The staff can communicate in English with no problem.

- I visited Malang for the “Bromo sunrise tour”. Before making the reservation, I confirmed with the hostel 3 times about the dropping off location for sunrise. Shelter told me: To enjoy the Sunrise Viewpoint, we usually go to King Kong Hill or Pananjakan, depending on whether the viewpoint is busy or not. Guess where we were dropped off? “Seruni Point Bromo” the driver dropped us there and drove away. There was no single jeep there. NO SINGLE JEEP because it was not the spot for sunrise. He told us to be back at 6 am while the sunrise was at 6:10???? The whole experience was a joke. Btw, the hostel is next to big road and cars were super loud that you wouldn’t be able to sleep.

- No air conditioning

+ the bed is big, it's a bed for two persons, and it's comfortable.

- toilet and shower are in the same room and it was really small space, very tight, and the toilet is quite dirty. didn't use it at all during the stay. the hostel itself is also tight and small, you have to go two floors upstairs or more to get into your room

- I’m not sure why this place has so many good reviews - the room smelt so bad & moldy. The whole place is very run down. Worst part was that I actually got bed bugs from my night. I couldn’t sleep during the night because I felt like bugs were biting me. I woke up with many red, big, itchy bites and I thought they were mosquitos at first. But asking other people at the hostel, nobody else got bitten so I googled bed bugs and my symptoms matched the description. Also when I first checked in, I noticed some orange shell-like things on the bed but didn’t realize until after I googled bed bugs that they were probably the shells of the bugs… I told the staff about it and not only did they NOT apologize, they told me they didn’t believe me?!??! They thought I was making this up and even insisted that I brought the bed bugs with me from my previous stay. Worst hostel stay and hospitality wow. I told them they needed to get someone professional to inspect it and they literally brushed me off.

+ Everybody was very friendly, near the train station and it was also clean BUT…

- … we found many bedbugs in our bed and pillow, we were sleeping in one of the double bedrooms. We were told that this is the first time and it has never happened, but there simply have been to many and too big ones for them to just be brought in by the guys before us, sorry. They assured us they would clean everything carefully, so I hope it won‘t happen again..

+ The hygiene of the toilet and the friendly staff

- I couldn't sleep all night it was so hot, no air con in the room, just one fan for all of us, is not fair. You should improve the facilities guys, is impossible to sleep when is hot

- No towel, no shower jel, no air conditioner and near the road very noisy.

+ Price, location, beds were comfortable enough

- 1. Wifi is barely functional. 2. There's only one small mobile AC unit for a large room that exists of two sections (a section with the single dorm beds and a section with the double dorm beds) which are seperated by a curtain, the AC kept being passed back and forth by guests on both sides cause the side that the unit wasn't on would get unbareably hot. 3. Some of the beds don't come with the extra storage space next to the bed as shown on the pictures. This is not properly advertised so don't book a bed here assuming that you'll have lots of place to store your stuff next to the bed. You might end up with one of the small beds like me and be forced to leave all your stuff on the ground in the common section while everyone else in the room is enjoying their extra space. 4. Staff was quite pushy with their tours. I was only staying in Malang and going to Bromo by myself afterwards but literally as soon as I handed over my passport for check-in they were already asking me why I hadn't booked any tours yet and trying to sell me their packages when I already told them I wasn't interested. 5. This one wasn't on the hostel but one of the guests was coughing his lungs out the entire night long, didn't get any sleep at all because of it.

- Estaba bastante sucio

+ Nachdem wir eine Nacht in der Nähe des Tumpak Sewu verbrachten, kamen wir in dieses Hostel zurück! Würden wir immer wieder machen, denn das Hostel ist super und das ganze Team sehr lieb! Im Doppelzimmer fühlten wir uns ein bisschen wie in einem Baumhaus und fanden es sehr gemütlich!

- In der Nacht haben uns Geräusche in der Zimmerdecke leider einmal den Schlaf geraubt und um 04:15 hört man die Moschee recht laut, wenn man einen leichten Schlaf hat. Das ist in Indonesien aber nichts Ungewöhnliches.

+ Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt! Das Team ist superfreundlich und hilfsbereit. Das Zimmer fanden wir total gemütlich und alles hat gut funktioniert (Klimaanlage war gut). Auch die Speisen im Cafe waren gut, besonders das Frühstück und es gab ein paar vegetarische/vegane Alternativen (Sojamilch). Außerdem werden Touren (Tumpak Sewu, Bromo etc.) angeboten, die preislich in Ordnung sind (wir haben sie nicht gebucht, aber hätten es vermutlich gemacht, wenn wir es vorher gewusst hätten). Zum Bahnhof sind es nur ein paar Minuten zu Fuß! Top Hostel aus unserer Sicht!

+ A lovely stay at the Shelter hostel. The staff were lovely, welcoming and organised 2 great trips for us! Bromo and Tumpak sewu waterfall. The toilet and shower were spotless, and the room was nice and cosy. Such good value for money!

+ Staff is very kind and the location is great!

- The AC was not working in the room so didn’t sleep bc of the heat. It is also very noisy with windows closed, almost as if I am standing outside and taking in all the sounds

+ Un sitio muy acogedor con una comida muy rica. Habitaciones grandes y cama muy cómoda. El personal muy atento y siempre ayudando a tener la mejor experiencia la ciudad.

+ Perfect for our 1 night in Malang before the East Java tour! Host was extremely welcoming and friendly.

- Had to be super cautious getting up and down from the bed but this is if we had to be super picky. Everything else was faultless!

+ Das Zimmer war einfach, aber mehr als ausreichend. Das Frühstück und auch das Abendessen war hervorragend! Sehr lecker. Die Mitarbeiter sind sehr freundlich. Der Bahnhof ist zu Fuss erreichbar. Wir konnten über die Unterkunft eine Tour zum Wasserfall mit Guide buchen.

- In der Nähe liegt eine Moschee und wir wurden jeweils durch den ersten Gebetsruf gegen 04:10 geweckt. Da kann die Unterkunft aber nix für.

+ We stayed in this cute hostel on the very first day of our anniversary indonesia tour. Shelter Hostel made our anniversary night truly special!! They arranged the cutest decor in our room for free! As it was our 5th year anniversary, they decorated with 5 beautiful candles. How thoughtful is that! I really loved their aesthetic, interior design, hostel atmosphere. The toilet and amenities were super clean. They even arranged a very check out without any hastle. I highly recommend this hostel.

+ I only had one night here but it was a perfect stopover. The bunks are spacious (however a bit warm) and facilities are clean. The location is great — close enough to walk to the flower market, Jodipan, and Kajoetangan Heritage Village. A special thanks to Figi for going above and beyond to help me locate a new camera battery very last minute

+ Location is good. Wonderful Staff and is cute

- The stairs are steep and difficult if carry heavy stuff but staff is great and ready to help in a blink. The rooms are very hot despite fans and machine but makes it hard to sleep all over it you are at the top, but you pay for what you get.
