Hostal Gato Colonial

I stay in a lot of hostels and it is rare to have the managers be THIS service oriented. Whatever issues came up, Pablo and Juan Carlo could be counted on to find a solution. You will be well taken care of here. I only wish I had discovered it earlier in my stay in the Dominican Republic.

Even though it said check-in 15-24 - checkin is really only until 9. During the day you don’t reach staff all the time, especially in the morning. Some of the volunteers were as attentive as a potatoe. The owners themselves are Nice and helpful via WhatsApp.

Pablo was very nice and helpful. Always willing to give some advices and ideas for the best spots in town. The kitchen was well equipped and the location was nice!

As a remote worker, I’ve been coming to Gato Colonial for almost two years and always felt like family. The new location is even better — same amazing management, great tips, and friendly vibe in the big kitchen. Love the bar energy and private terrace. Super comfy beds, strong AC, and hot showers make it perfect. As a digital nomad often in Santo Domingo, this is my go-to spot. Already booked my next stay!

The location is ideal and the staff is genuinely welcoming. However, the rest was unfortunately disappointing. The accommodation falls well short of what the photos suggest, which is a shame because the place has real potential. Several issues affected our stay: leaking pipes in the bathroom, a persistent bad smell, no sheets or towels upon arrival, and the presence of ants and cockroaches in the room.

My honest feedback: I cannot recommend this hostel. Owners are really nice, that’s all for the positive side. Room was totally different from the pictures and came as simple as it gets. 6sqm with a bed inside. Diverse spots on the bedsheet. No light other than the super bright main light worked. Bathroom old, small, rusty. There was no toilet paper (am I expected to bring my own?) and no towels. I saw a big cockroach walking into another room.
