Overall, I cannot recommend staying at Hostel Santa Maria in a shared dormitory, for the following reasons: Before my arrival, I was asked to pay an additional €30 fee for arriving outside of the official check-in hours—despite the fact that my arrival was only about 30 minutes later than the stated time. The staff were incredibly helpful and the atmosphere was very welcoming

Great hostel, spotlessly clean and location was brilliant for Funchal, right in the centre of the old town. Staff were very helpful and attentive, and had great suggestions for excursions, restaurants, car parking etc. Not the most social of hostels if that’s your thing, possibly due to the lack of social spaces, although the kitchen is very well equipped and a nice space. Bar down the road is quite loud at night so ensure you have earplugs, great place to be based for a holiday in Madeira

Location is perfect and staff are nice , atmosphere is good to meet other travellers . Bathroom need improvement .

Das Hostel ist schön und sauber. Es ist aber nichts für Leute mit leichtem Schlaf. Durch den alten Holzboden hört man jeden Schritt im Haus als wäre es direkt neben deinem Bett. Die zentrale Lage zieht natürlich auch Lärm mit sich. Außerdem schaltet die Reinigungskraft ohne Rücksicht das Licht morgens an und reißt das Fenster auf. Such a charming place to stay. The location couldn’t be any better. Because it is in the centre of the action, it can be loud at night pending which room you are in. The staff were wonderful, and I would definitely stay here again! Highly recommend Santa Maria hostel as your home away from home while in Madeira.

A really great hostel, located right in the middle of Funchal. The private room was lovely - huge and comfortable for a good price. There’s lot of places to work and good WiFi if you’re remote working. It’s as social as you make it - there are no activities organized but you can meet people in the kitchen or loft areas. Huge recommend.

Lovely spacious room, clean, comfortable bed. Reasonable kitchen facilities, but abit small for the number of beds. I recently had the pleasure of staying at Santa Maria Hostel in Funchal, and I couldn't be happier with my experience. The hostel itself is charming and clean, with a vibrant and friendly vibe. My room was comfortable and well-maintained, and the communal areas were perfect for meeting fellow travellers and relaxing after a day of exploring. The location of Santa Maria Hostel is also fantastic. It's situated in a lively area, close to the old town and within easy reach of public transport.

I had such an incredible time here for my first time in Madeira, such an amazing atmosphere and was surprised to make so many friends during the off season, they definitely made my trip one to remember! the services, facilities & staff are wonderful, helpful and welcoming, they make you feel right at home. as with any hostel, bring earplugs as the streets can be noisy & floors r creaky it’s the perfect location in Funchal, soooo beautiful!!

Good for backpacking trips

Overall pretty good. Great location! Staff were friendly and helpful. Social atmosphere was pretty much non-existent and lots of 60+ year olds and families rather than young people (at least from what I saw) so maybe keep that in mind. Be warned there was no aircon in the rooms (was a small fan but aircon would have been much better) so it got soooo hot and difficult to sleep. Nice hostel (great old building) in a great cobblestone street with nice art, restaurants and cocktailbars. Located near the sea, the cabin car track and the local market. Very friendly and helpful staff! We've had a wonderful holiday and would recommend this hostel to other travelers. Thanks from Holland.

Les points forts: la localisation au cœur du Funchal, vous avez accès à tout à pied (bus, supérette, boulangerie…)La rue est bruyante mais une paire de earplugs fait l’affaire ! cette rue est fréquentée pour ces restaurants et bars.
