Good for one night but not more, the location is great but I found the hostel’s room and bathroom dirty. It’s obviously too expensive but I guess it’s still the cheapest option in Victoria.
Not much to do or people interested in meeting others. More of a place to sleep then a place to make friends and have a ton of fun. Nice dark rooms for getting a proper sleep. In a good location near buses and clubs.
It wasn't what I expected. I booked a private room with a shared bathroom, but it turned out that the “room”—if you can even call it that—was a bed set up in a kitchen, where there's a table with a mattress on top... I was expecting a small room, not a kitchen converted into a room... The receptionist gave no explanation... Watch out for room number 37.
The location felt a little sketchy as a solo female traveller when outside especially at night. It was close to downtown though so easy to walk and bus everywhere. Staff were friendly especially the lovely bartender, and free breakfast, dinner and a drink were appreciated. However the facilities are SO outdated, the set up of the dorms and the bathrooms feels very old fashioned. I also didn’t love that the hostel attempts to charge for so much - $100 deposit when you arrive, towel deposit etc
Très bon séjour !
dinner & breakfast was included food was okay, but the rooms were very congested located in old building, no elevator, walked up & down 3 floors. Not a usual hostel vibe- social, outgoing. some long-term tenants living there too.
All around good, just downtown Victoria is always sketchy. Hostel itself is great.
Hostel was perfectly ok, was a bit taken aback by the $100 deposit in case I somehow broke the room and to find out not everyone had been charged this was a bit weird. Very secure with a basement storage to hold bags before check in, nice bar and clean kitchen. Beds have curtains for privacy which I really like and the location was great. (A note about the city, there is a huge drug and homeless problem as is in many cities across the world now so just be warned it’s not a happy place)
Friendly staff and complimentary breakfast and dinner saves so much money in the long run. They even have a decent board game selection.
A friend and I stayed here (in the deluxe 6-bed female dorm) for one night and enjoyed our stay overall. The staff are very friendly & helpful, the free breakfast & free dinner are great, and the facilities are generally clean (and the showers have hot water!). I was glad to have chosen the deluxe room; I was glad to have an outlet and curtains on my bed. Also, the location is pretty good (20-min walk from Beacon Hill Park). I would stay here again if I found myself back in Victoria
Nice place in the heart of downtown, but the building is a little old and dated. Not the most comfortable bed, and the room got a little stuffy since it only had 1 little window.
Amazing hostel. They serve their guests breakfast, supper and a drink every night. The staff are amazing as well. We would definitely stay at Ocean Island again the next time we come to Victoria
The kitchen is a bit oldfashioned but they have free dinner!!
The team was wonderful, shoutout to Yannick who we found is so welcoming and always on top of the situation. The room was excellent as well and very comfortable. Also the food quality was wonderful ! I didn't think that the free breakfast and free dinner would be so qualitative and I was pleasantly surprised.
The location is very central and the staff is helpful and friendly. Breakfast and dinner are free. However, the building has 4 floors and no elevator, which is a bit troublesome.
There are a lot of guests aged 40+ which I'm not used to seeing at a hostel. I'm 28 and I felt like the youngest one there... I didn't see any people my age, it was impossible to meet friends. It seemed like a sketchy crowd. The rooms were extremely loud from outside noises and there were homeless people at the front of the property.
Staff was extremely courteous, friendly and helpful. I greatly appreciate that they accommodated my physical disability right away. For people with physical disabilities, however, Ocean Island Inn needs to clearly inform perspective guests well in advance that despite its multiple floors, it has no elevators. Currently, disabled people must inform staff in advance that they cannot safely negotiate stairs; without advance notice, however, uninformed new guests risk serious injury.
The facility is in a good area. You have to leave a towel deposit. The dinner provide was mediocre, the breakfast was very good. Only stayed a night but b it appeared that some long-term residents had infants. The staff is friendly. The rooms were in fair condition bathrooms were clean.
A great hostel in a great location, only small issue is you have to walk through the bar to get to the kitchen
The location is great, you’re right downtown and when the weather is good you can walk to a lot of sights. However because of the downtown location you can hear everything outside, the busy street, protesters and people coming home from clubs. The facilities were good, the bathrooms spacious and everything seemed clean. The staff were friendly and helpful and the free breakfast and dinner were always good.
