Lake Mahinapua Hotel

Cute little hostel. Off season the restaurant is closed so it was self check in and easy process. The common lounge and kitchen is well supplied and cozy vibes. Big downside is that the kitchen isn't fully enclosed which means mice get in. Close to the beach and Hokitika if you don't want to be right in town.

Stayed only one night but had a great time in the pub. Pool table, darts, karaoke and the owners were friendly and encouraging everyone to have a good time. Only one key for the whole 4 person room.

Had a wonderful stay. The room was spotless, the facilities brilliant including a lovely hot tub and the staff were friendly , attentive and even gave me a lift into Hokitika because I don’t have a car. I really enjoyed the lake too which was only a short walk away and spent a couple of hours there each day. The hostel was a real treat.

The kitchen is very basic. 2 burners and not very many kitchen utensils. The close proximity to the beach was nice but it is about 10 minutes out of Hokitika. Beds were extremely basic. I you are on top bunk, you will have to plug your phone in on the ground. The wifi didn't work and the matress was moist with the rooms having a bit of a meldew smell. It is not bad for the price but not great.

This would be an amazing hostel when its full and the pub is open but we arrivedat9pm it was empty so no vibe or atmosphere

Ok hostel, pretty basic bedrooms and kitchen is way too small for the amount of people there.

Kitchen needs cutlery and more plates and basic stuff like that.if a coach load turn up haw can they share 2 folks. Showers were clean but need updating.

The rooms smelled really bad and it was very humid in the rooms. The matress was moist

Stayed here as part of the Kiwi Experience, so it’s a party in the evening which was super fun and social! Pretty basic rooms and facilities but has everything you need, and only a short walk from beach and lake. Not much to do here but a good pit stop. Good bar with food!

Really lovely place, great atmosphere even though there weren’t many people staying when I was there. Really close to the beach, nice walk along the track to watch the sun go down. Staff really friendly and welcoming, would definitely stay again.

Manager Allison was very rude. She had ruined the experience of being here. Many other agreed to this after we had left. Attitude & just not a happy person to be around.

Kitchen doesn't really exist. 2 bowls for everyone. First night there was no one in the hostel except me and one family, the next night it was completely full of kiwi experience people who were having a party. Showers are a joke. Hostel is really close to beach and lake, but far away from city

It’s okay for a night, but the doors on the showers are a joke (you can see everything) and if the oven isn’t working, maybe at least put a sign up:/

Fantastic location - stunning beach and lake on your doorstep. No issues with the accommodation itself. Unfortunately the experience was let down by the Kiwi Experience group who shared the accommodation on the 2nd and 3rd night. There was no consideration of others by the group. Loud talking, shouting and playing the piano, all just outside the rooms at 1am despite some being advertised as family rooms. The hotel should do more to enforce a quiet time after midnight at the very least!

We found this place to be full of nice surprises..a lovely atmosphere for backpackers to hang out, in a historic hotel, with the added bonus of a beautiful lake across the road, a 2km incredible old forest walk leading to it and a beach just down the track for sunsets and walks …the young people who came in ended up singing around the piano which was a delight for us older guests…(who had our own private room). Can recommend…

The hostel is out of town. After 6.30 p.m. the restaurant or better the kitchen is closed. Bathroom was very dirty - like there was a party at the weekend and nobody cleaned up! The kitchen for backpackers was als not so nice just everything old and not really clean
