The location is perfect. The staff is friendly. The food and drinks are good. Very nice bed. But the location is old, which you can see. I was hoping for some social atmosfere, but the restaurant was closed at I think 22.00 and the bar was closed then as well, where I was hoping to just have some more drinks at the bar. Restaurant and bar you have to pay direct and per order. Cannot be added to the room or to a table which is okay, but feels a bit strange.
I found it weird that the sauna and gym were free but the spa cost money. The cabin walls were very thin, so we could hear a man snoring in the next cabin. The cabin doors didn’t seal well and the corridor floorboards creaked so as soon as the first person walked down the hallway, it woke everyone up. The layout of the hostel is great with the DIY kitchen at one end and the bistro at the other. Easy access to cars.
We really loved the skotel, and wished we had time to stay there longer. It would be a great budget friendly place to wait a few days for hiking weather windows - especially if you want to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. There's a tasty restaurant ($$$) and nice par/patio area, a kids play space, and a lounge with a complete kitchen for more cost-effective food preparation. If we were coming back, we'd bring more food for breakfast/lunch, and splurge for dinner somewhere.
It’s terrible they moved me to a different lodge 20 km away from the Tongariro National Park and the lodge they put me in is well below the standard This is not acceptable!
Great place to finish the Tongariro Northern Circuit!
Room was very small, shared bathroom was okay. Possible to have a good breakfast.
El lugar tiene una vista divina, pero la ubicación es la más complicada de toda NZ.
Location was perfect sitting right in front of the beautiful mountains. My favorite part though was the ownership. They were very friendly at the counter, recommending hiking trails, and having friendly conversation. Altogether it went made for a warm and homy stay. I’ve already recommended it to another traveler fixing to pass through Tongariro.
If you want budget accomodation but more privacy than your usual hostel - stay at the skotel. It was amazing value for money. Double room in the backpacker area with access to the community kitchen, the restaurant, bar, fitness room, sauna, etc. Perfectly located if you like to hike and the skotel reception organised our shuttle to/from the Tongariro alpine crossing. Must come back and stay for a couple of more nights, it was absolutely great.
It was a lovely location in the national park, close to some trailheads. The staff were very friendly and accommodating.
We absolutely loved it here, you get so much for a competitive price. We are travellers on a budget so we were pleasantly surprised at the facilities including the spar, views and lovely kitchen/lounge area.
Owners were soooo nice. She was overworked because of staff issues and still took the time to help us with what to do in area and was still so nice. Most comfortable beds during our time in New Zealand. Common room was so cozy and the pizza was great. Hike nearby was amazing. Wish hot tub was open later and wasn’t booked up but understand why they do it that way and doesn’t detract from the perfection of this place.
Great vibe and location with a stunning view of Mount Ngauruhoe. The restaurant and bar are great and hiking tracks start basically right from the front door. This is a very convenient and chill place to stay while you explore the area.
