I had a amazing stay with Daniel and his Family! It is a unique experience to get to know their way of life Gracias - Matyox! :)
It was a pleasure to stay with the family of David and Marcela. I was sick when I arrived, and it was a good place to take rest for a couple of days. Once I got better it was great to try the homemade food, help making tortillas and try the traditional clothes. The house is in San Jorge, there are no tourists facilities and you will be the only gringo in town. I loved it but it might not be for everyone. Great if you want to connect with locals and have an idea of their routine.
This is a great experience to do if you are staying nearby in Panajchel, the family are very welcoming, friendly and we learnt alot about their culture during our stay. Cooking dinner with the family was great, the facilities are good and there is a great viewpoint nearby. Would highly recommend giving it a try if you are nearby in Panajchel! ☺️
The family was amazing, warm, friendly and helpful. They taught us how to make beaded bracelets, dressed us up in Mayan dress. The only drawback is that the family cooked in tap water which severely limited what I could eat. An amazing experience.
We only stayed with Marcela and her family for one night but we had such a lovely time with them. Marcela, Ingrid and Daniel Jr and Sr were very friendly and helpful, plus the little boy Aron was so sweet! The family make you delicious food and include you in their traditional activities. For an authentic homestay where you can be immersed in Mayan culture, I’d highly recommend it. But also great for a stop over! There is also an amazing viewpoint less than 5 minutes from the property!
Do not believe the description of this experience. I stayed at a home with a wonderful and friendly family however, there was no wifi, no clean sheets, and chickens right in front of my room. I got zero sleep because of the odor from the sheets and the rooster. The location is in San Jorge where there are no tourists. It is impossible to find unless you speak spanish. The owner of this while program is rude, seems uneducated and will get upset at you if you express concerns.
This was one of the coolest things we did on our trip besides the volcano hike!! This homestay was such a cool experience if you want to practice your spanish! the family was so sweet and easy to talk and laugh with!
This homestay has been the highlight of my trip. Despite my awful Spanish (and zero experience with Kaqchikel) I loved my interactions with this family, joking with them, and the mere exposure of sharing intimate space with them. They are a quick walk from town central, El Mirador, and the bus stop to Panajachel. Take a walk to the Lake and greet the townspeople. Everyone I met in San Jorge was very kind and helpful , and it was a welcome reprieve from the usual tourist-dense towns on Atitlan.
Nous avons adoré notre séjour dans une famille maya. Tout le monde était adorable, la chambre et la salle de bain étaient correctes. Je recommande fortement!
Highly recommended! Truly a unique experience. Only for Spanish speakers. Maybe slightly high price for what is provided but please remember it all goes to the family :)
Stayed for one night with my friend and we had a really amazing time. Helped with meals that were delicious and played with the children. Highly recommend!!
The family is very lovely and the food was very good :-) Would totally recommend if you want a real Mayan experience and swich the hostel life up where you don‘t really see the real deal. Do not expect that it will be lika a hostel or hotel since it is about a real experience :) Thank you very much for everything!
10/10 would recommend doing this!! Booked to stay with Anselmo and Petrona and their family, we received a tour of the town from their son Robinson, as well as dinner, coffee and a live performance on the marimba to which we were taught Guatemaltecan dances. A very fun evening and a very personal way to get to know the local culture. We also were giving the chance to wear traditional clothing and learn the native language. The bedrooms were cleaner than most hostels I’ve been to. For the price...
I understand how a local Central American lives, I really do. For the price paid, I would say twice or three times as expensive as it should be. No way to find the place, luckily the mom and dad were walking on the street and found me. Not a clean or even up-kept place Not much Spanish was spoken, more Mayan (which is a beautiful language) and the others staying there kept speaking Dutch. Food was ok, I am an American and can make better tortillas Please stop charging this much for such
It was great to spend everyday life with a Mayan family. The family was very approachable, and we learned a lot about their desires and life. An enriching experience that I wish for everyone.
Thé home is very basic where people can experience common Mayan village life. Hot water shower. The family is very hospitable with typical Mayan breakfast and dinner included. Very good experience.
משפחה מקסימה! נהנו מכל רגע איתם. דאגו לנו ופינקו אותנו. ממש נותן חוויה אחרת לטיול, ממליצה מאוד!
Really lovely stay and a great experience. We had two lovely meals with our family and played with the children. Great if you want to practice your Spanish
We feel grateful to have spent a week with Marcela and her lovely family. We enjoyed the conversations during breakfast and dinner, learning Kaqchikel and "a tortear", as well as playing with kids. San Jorge la Laguna is a peaceful village with beautiful views, close to bustling Panajachel. From there, we were able to travel all around the lake which was amazing. We recommend this stay to anyone seeking human connection and simplicity.
