Arrived at the hostel and was greeted by a drunk man holding a beer staring at my legs telling us to get out of the shuttle, when we asked questions to make sure we were safe and in the right place, he stared blankly at us until the owner came out. Romy (the owner) told us that it was his birthday, so they were celebrating (drinking). We had no access to food, because there were no cooks working at the restaurant. We did not have a car and were reliant on the shuttle service, he did not show up ...
Sleepers sleep cheaper in Monteverde, Costa Rica, Doesn't exist any more, 2/ Feb 2025 when we arrived to the address, the whole place was deserted and dusty, no body around, we spoke to the next door hostel Coati staff, and been told the Sleepers sleep cheaper closed down.
Stayed in 100’s of hostels over the last 10 years, and this is one of the worst. No atmosphere, no interaction between staff and guests, a bed was missing a mattress, poorly equipped kitchen, dishes piling up, no towels to dry, bathroom door missing a handle, loud music played first night, got an arrogant ‘why’ when asked to turn it down, no security and at check in, the lady asked me how much I had to pay! Served breakfast late on my last morning, needs to close or needs new ownership...
Ok if you just need a bed but the atmosphere was really weird. No one explained anything when we got there, later I tried to ask a woman at the reception about trips and bus schedules and she didn't know anything just saying the bus should be around 6 or 7... Totally not helpful, I preferred if they just said they don't know. Also don't do the laundry there - it came back still smelly.
I strongly recommend not to book at Sleepers hostel. There are several other hostels within walking distance that offer a much better service with a friendlier staff. Upon arriving at Sleepers, I was denied towels and they tried to make me pay extra for them. Also, even though they advertise free breakfast, THERE IS NO FREE BREAKFAST. The hostel manager snapped at me angrily when I asked about the free breakfast. Over all, the atmosphere was very unwelcoming and I was glad to leave.
Overall the hosts were nice and helped us book our tours but unfortunately our room wasn’t the cleanest.
Private room was fairly comfortable. Ad lists free breakfast but it’s a PAID extra. Told the owner this and he thinks it’s fine to mislead people as long as he has in the fine print of the ad. Kitchen is shared with a restaurant, so using this facility is sometimes crowded. We did the night tour they recommended which was very poor quality. There is absolutely no social atmosphere
Terrible sleep on the mattresses, they are so old and used, you could actually feel the steel springs (roommates complained about the same). No soap in the bathroom, bins often full, dorms rather small, no ladder to get to top bunk bed (you have to jump or climb somehow). There is rarely someone at the reception. When I arrived the receptionist seemed very drunk, unable to hold a thought and confused what to do. Check-in took ages. No sofa or hangout / common area, just the restaurant downstairs
Basically, apart for the cheap price and pretty good location, there's nothing more. Some of the photos shown are not what you'll actually get (mostly for the kitchen). Kitchen: pans, pots, microwave and toaster haven't been changed for years. Fridge is super small. No dish soap, just regular soap. You got to pay to exchange books (outrageous). You'll need to eat more than just the included breakfast. Dorm: can't close bathroom door or you might get locked in. Also 0 vibes. Left 3 days early...
Hostel is fine for one night but the atmosphere was missing and it was overall a bit run down. Staff was nice and the a warm shower is a plus but I wouldn’t come here again.

Loved our stay here, such a beautiful piece of property allowing us to see monkeys and toucans. The owner and his entire family were all so friendly. They were very accommodating as we couldn’t make it our first night. Very clean cabins, no AC however it’s no issue as it cools off at night. Highly recommend staying here if you’re looking for a nature focused stay.
It was amazing! A beautiful place in nature and everyone was so friendly and helpful! Would definitely recommend
The host was so lovely, and brought us to try find toucans/howler monkeys.
I highly recommend the River & Waterfall Hike. A hike as opposed to most tourist "hikes" in Costa Rica which were just walking. 4h, beautiful, off the beaten track and decently tough. Beautiful waterfalls.
A unique place to stay! I spent 2 nights in a hammock. Spotting toucans and monkeys right from where you sleep. The owner and his brother are kind and helpful. Great choice if you’re looking for a nature-focused stay.
The location is amazing and you get a great view of forest and very interesting wildlife. Unfortunately the host who is in charge of the whole place was drunk for half of my stay and my activity was cancelled. The shuttles that were meant to bring people up were cancelled and dinner was also cancelled one night. We are very reliant on him since we are in the middle of the forest. The management can definitely be improved.
Nous avons adoré notre séjour là bas. Notre hôte a été d'une incroyable gentillesse, et a fait tout son possible pour que nous ne manquions de rien pour que nous passions le meilleur séjour possible. C'était incroyable
what an amazing chilled place. on top of a hill with fantastic sunsets. Horse riding, hicking and waterfall trips amongst others. Spent 1 night in the hammock which was great and easy to fall asleep in and felt warm all night. Could hear the wildlife and howler monkeys. Spent the next 2 in one of the lodges. The owner Romy is great, friendly and helpful. the breakfasts are filling and evening meals are copious and very good. Toucans, humming birds are plentiful. Highly recommend coming here
Beautiful location. Fernando, Junior, and the rest of the staff were amazing. Food and coffee were incredible. Would stay again for sure. Location is very much in the mountains, so I recommend arriving during daylight to save yourself a little stress.
This place is fantastic. The views are amazing, the cabins are very comfortable and great value for money, and Fernando and Ronny couldn’t do enough to help us. Sunsets in the evening after long days in the national parks were a highlight of the trip. Thank you!!
Romy (the manager) was super nice and helpful. Each morning he was excited to show us all the beautiful nature. The lodges are fine; the nature is what it’s all about. Would definitely go back!!
My friend and I had an AMAZING time staying in the hanging tents at Campos de Oro Wilderness Lodge! The ambience was unmatched - breathtaking views, relaxing music in the dining area, and a real local feel. It is family run, with enthusiastic hosts ready to both serve you morning coffee and take you down the trail to check out the toucans or monkeys on the hillside. The tents were very comfortable. I loved waking up to the sounds of nature, including a family of howler monkeys in a nearby tree.
Ruime eenvoudige kamer.
It is a fantastic place, with amazing people. You come here for the view, the sunset and the warmth of the place. It is like sleeping in the jungle, don't expect the most luxurious facilities, but expect real nature, connection and very lovely people!
This is an amazing place to stay. We went as a group of 4 friends. Probably the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. You are right in the mountains, the views are incredible. Our lodges were cozy and comfortable with hot water for showers. The food was delicious, we ate both breakfast and dinner in the lodge every night of our stay and loved it. Saw the best rainbow of my life. We had rented a car. Make sure you have four wheel drive for the drive up as a lot of it was gravel and steep.
The nature here was amazing! We saw more animals here than at the cloud forest. The host is super attentive and friendly. He took us to see toucans and where the moneys live. We saw multiple rainbows everyday and a beautiful sunset every night as well. Overall we felt right and home and the five days where were there felt too short.
If you are looking for a unique nature place to stay, you won‘t be disappointed by this one. Even if we just stayed for one night, the experience was very humbling. Remy the owner is really friendly and supporting. He even showed us some wildlife in the garden. Can recommend!
