Sloth Backpackers Hostel and Bed & Breakfast

DO NOT book here. When we arrived the building was completely vacant and up for sale. I was sent a confirmation for the booking and received zero follow up information stating that the hostel had shut down. Had to scramble to find a new place to stay. Extremely unprofessional and irresponsible. Ended up staying at Camino Verde B&B which was much nicer and cost less.

Sloth backpackers is currently under construction/renovations so shouldn’t really be advertised to book. We arrived and it was closed/abandoned. However, we did go across to Koati hostel next door which was really great. Mauricio and his wife took great care of us and were very helpful. I would suggest you book there instead.

If I could give a score of 0 I would give, a hostel not clean at all, we took a private room and the room has mold in the toilet sink, the shower was full of the hair of a woman who was probably in the room in front of us. The bedding in the bed had hairs and a man's perfume scent, even though we were in the room only 2 girls and we were really disgusted to shower and touch the things in the room. The payment at the hostel is in cash only and it is not written about it anywhere.

Threatened to call the police on the owner. Very scammy behavior and rules aside (see below), the owner entered our room during our absence, not for room service or cleaning, but to “swap out the furniture”, moved our personal items, and then proceeded to lie about it until threatened with law enforcement. Her response was “my property, I do what I want”. We barricaded our room that night for safety, we were traveling with a child. Kitchen is not accessible until after 10am, even for...

Had to pay with cash once getting there which was not stated beforehand or online. My friend got a separate room which she paid for, but then decided to go to a separate hotel for the night because she didn’t feel comfortable there (but still kept the reservation at Sloth). They ended up marking her as a no show even though she checked in and paid fully. We think they did this so she wouldn’t be able to write a review on her dissatisfaction with the hostel.

Absolute SCAM! We did not get the room we had booked. Instead, they put us in another room in the other hostel next door, which was cheaper quality and also had one bed less than we had paid for!! When we asked them about this they were not willing to give us any kind of compensation and instead put us off with excuses as for why our original room was supposedly unavailable. Horrible customer service, we do not recommend booking this place at all!

L'unico motivo per cui suggerirei questo ostello è l'ottima posizione, ma ci sono alternative certamente piú valide. Pulizia della stanza e del bagno pessime, per non dire inesistente. Wi-fi nel dormitorio femminile non funzionante. quasi 24h senza gas nella cucina e senza acqua calda. Cucina condivisa aperta solo fino alle 9, poi la chiudono a chiave e i piatti devono giá essere lavati a quell'ora. Colazione ok ma solo dalle 7 alle 8.30.

We loved this hostel!! The staff was so sweet and helpful with everything and our room was perfect! It was spacious and very clean.There was a different breakfast every day which we also loved.

Well it’s cheap… so it seems. However they apply their own exchange rate which is totally in their advantage. Charged me >$18 for 2,5 kg laundry and then lost one of my items. Bathroom is full of mold on all of the walls and ceiling. Very uncomfortable bed. The breakfast is only eggs and toast very basic. But what is worst is the atmosphere. In the common area there is constantly playing the same horrible music all day every day until 9pm. I was the only guest for three days!! Loud noisy roa...

Dès l’arrivée on a l’impression d’être dans une agence de voyage, a peine le temps de poser nos sacs qu’on nous propose les différents tours possibles avec l’hôtel de manière très/trop insistante. Musique toute la journée alors qu’il n’y a personne, ce qui rend l’ambiance un peu glauque. Cuisine censée ouvrir à 7h qui ouvre finalement 45min après sans explication ni excuse alors qu’on devait partir pour un tour ensuite.

the receptionist was amazing, very kind and welcoming. the room and bathroom is very clean. beds are also okay. on our last day we were very late to pick up so we had only 10 min left for breakfast but he still kindly managed to make us something. he also organized our transfer to la fortuna and the laundry service was excellent (just kinda expensive). wifi woked really well and the kitchen is well equipped.

Son excelente anfitriones. Don Mauricio es un ser exceptional con El Servicio. Cuartos limpias acojedores. Desayuno muy bueno. Lo. Mejor la cama. Regresaré y lo recomendaré. Digan pa'lante y Puras Vida

It was a nice place to stay in Monteverde, the other backpackers staying at the hostel really set the vibe and made our stay great. The little guy at the reception is a legend!

I loved this hostel so much it was so homely and cute. Yir was so helpful with booking activities and giving us recommendations. (If you consider yourself a banangrams genius you need to come and have a face off with Yir)

L'emplacement est bien situé dans la ville, il n'y a pas grand place pour se détendre à l'hostel. peut-être des hamacs ça serait bien, sinon pour le prix c'est très raisonnable. Les déjeuners étaient excellents et comme il faisait plus froid à Monteverde, vous avez accès à une grosse couverture pour chaque lit, nous avons très bien dormi.

the light in the bathroom was broken and the music was constantly playing in the common area that was right on the road making it very hard to relax in the day time. It was very clean and good value for money

Très confortable, central, tranquille, personnel acuillant et très aidant. (Seul petite critique, la musique était très forte et répétitive, proche des chambres). Mais je recommanderais tout de même!

Sehr ruhige Atmosphäre, gemütlicher Vorplatz, gut ausgestattete Küche. Lage war gut. Im Badezimmer ging das Licht nicht und einige Steckdosen funktionierten nicht.

Waren für 2 Nächte da. Die Zimmer waren total ok, für den Preis kann man nichts sagen. Küche war gut ausgestattet und sehr zentrale Lage, was super für Ausflüge war. An der Rezeption bekommt man alle Infos zu Aktivitäten in der Umgebung und sie buchen einem den Eintritt in den Cloud Forest. Wir hatten gutes Wetter und konnten immer draußen im Hof sitzen.

Very basic hostel with limited atmosphere and a reception which almost never is occupied. I stayed in a four bed dorm with slightly shaky bunk beds and a toilet which not was working properly during my one-night-stay. The location is good with the bus stop to Monteverde Cloud Forest right in front of the door and multiple supermarkets and restaurants around. The WiFi is stable too.

The hostel is located at a good place close to everything you need. The guy working there was extremely helpful and gave a great service. The common kitchen was good. The venue as such is a bit old but works for a couple of nights.

One of the cheapest hostels we found in Costa Rica so good value for money. Weird vibe and was literally empty though so wouldn’t recommend for solo travelers. Our room had a pretty bad mould smell and the toilet flush wasn’t working, once it was fixed there was an annoying noise coming from it all night. The guy working was pretty hard to get hold of when needed

Overall it was a nice Hostel. The guy at the reception was very friendly and helpful. The free breakfast was absolutely amazing.

Puedo decir que el mejor hostal más limpio en el que he estado a través de Hostel World es SLOTH BACKPACKERS en monteverde, el dueño del lugar es increíble, yo soy de México y encontramos cosas en común en las cortas charlas que tuvimos, es una persona muy generosa y amigable, recomiendo este lugar al 100% por las atenciones que me brindó y los ricos desayunos que preparó, muchas gracias por todo. Ya quiero volver en un tiempo futuro para poder estar otra vez en Sloth en mis futuros viaj...

Nur Barzahlung, der Hostelbetreiber ist zwar hilfsbereit bei allen Fragen, aber ich habe mich nicht wohl gefühlt. Selbst für Hostelverhältnisse ist dieses Hostel nicht gut

The staff at this hostel goes above and beyond for their guests. I had such a wonderful experience and give credit to them and all of their kindness and support that they showed me while I was visiting. The room and facilities were very clean and inviting! I was really happy with my stay and met some nice people here too! Pura Vida!!!
