Mad Monkey Waterfront

This place was vile. I booked the 6 bed female dorm. I don’t believe it ever got cleaned. There is aggressive mold growing in the shower. There is no where to set your stuff so the other women in the room had stuff everywhere. Food, silverware, yarn, socks, hair brushes. You name it, it was thrown about and you had to step over it or move it on the communal table. I booked this place because it advertised air conditioner however; we didn’t have any and it was sweltering.

Full of long term residents which makes the stay for short term backpackers very uncomfortable. Belongings and dirty clothes were all over the room and bathroom, curtains never drawn and general atmosphere unpleasant. Made to feel as though you’re invading people’s space even though it is shared accommodation. Not a sociable hostel at all and reception staff unhelpful. Short term and long term guests should be put in separate dorms as it ruins the whole experience for those wanting to social...

Awful place! The rooms are disgusting, the staff are rude and incompetent and nothing works properly. The only good thing about this place is that it is so close to the waterfront for when you need to escape your room. Wouldn't recommend at all.

My negative review is based upon one factor…age discrimination. It’s 2023 for God’s sake & management feels it’s okay to limit who can stay in a dorm room based upon a subjective age criteria?! Absolutely rubbish. It should be up to each guest whether or not they want to stay in a “party hostel” or one that caters to young adults.. I booked a few nights stay here and didn’t see the the age limitations so was forced to switch to a private room at 4x the cost. Really disheartening to...

This is one of the worst I’ve stayed at. No one is there after 5pm so if you have questions too bad. The walkway to the desk is so tiny you can’t fit with your stuff. Rooms are of low quality. Difficult to meet people as there’s no common area you have to go to their sister hostel.

Good location on the esplanade. The layout is weird, it didn’t make me want to use the facilities so I just used the hostel as a place to sleep. My room was nice enough but the beds were very creaky and the air conditioner was stuck on the coldest setting. I was quite concerned to see little stickers on the corner of the ceiling in the bedroom and bathroom warning that there was asbestos present. I wouldn’t want to stay here again.

sehr einfach, etwas runtergekommen, es war schimmel an der wand und mein einzelzimmer hatte kein Fenster, deshalb sehr schlechte Luft im Raum dauerhaft, viele langzeit gäste im hostel

lovely staff, really friendly and helpful, nice clean hostel if you are looking for a short term stay. limitless facilities if you are looking for value for money, as many other hostels in cairns have way more for the same price. but as a smaller hostel it serves its purpose well

Best hostel in Cairns. Really enjoyed my stay here. The room was really nice and clean. The location of the hostel is good since it is close to anything. The staff was really nice and friendly. Highly recommend this hostel!

Really good hostel, would definitely recommend if you’re looking for something very chill and clean.. room are spacious, clean, bathroom too! I would say that the only problem is that there’s just one bathroom in every room (but it is ok, you can deal with that) and not really really social. But apart from that, is a very good hostel, I would stay here again for sure

weird vibe to this place. hard to find and once you’re in there it’s basically just a corridor of rooms with the kitchen at the end and then another social space downstairs in what looks like the back alley of the night markets. wouldn’t stay here again

Mad Monkey is a really social environment where you can meet a lot of people. Everything is clean. The staff is really nice and helpful.

Clean, quiet, and in a perfect central location. The staff were kind and always helpful, and the overall vibe was really friendly and welcoming. The only small downside: the kitchen knives could use some sharpening 🥹

I highly recommend this Mad Monkey. It's very quiet, pleasant, and clean. The staff are helpful and always ready to assist. It's not too big, so it's easy to socialize with people if you arrive alone. The kitchen is very good with all the equipment you need: microwave, air fryer. A big plus for the location: right across from the lagoon, which is a real bonus because everything is nearby: bars, restaurants, the lagoon, supermarket... You can go there with your eyes closed!

small hostel with very little going on. rooms weren’t very clean and the bathroom situation was awful. amazing location but that’s just about the only redeeming quality

Great place to stay for a few days in Cairns. Right on the waterfront and within walking distance to most things in the city. Rooms and kitchen were cleaned daily and wasn’t too noisy at night. Bare in mind most people seemed to be staying long term so not the easiest for meeting people if your only there for a few days
