Shockingly rude and agressive staff. They had a broken water pump so NO SHOWERS FOR 4 DAYS! A measly discount was given considering the circumstances. Electric went out and no backup power at all. Everyone at the hostel was so upset and all of the staff we spoke to were super rude. I can only imagine that any decent reviews written about this place are fake. Don't make the mistake we did of booking this place 🙏
“Check-in” by a man who didn’t know much, straight away the vibes were weird. Staff weren’t forthcoming/friendly (bar Hector). Check-in man Daniel would light cigarettes off the kitchen cooker & walked through spreading smoke (grim). No choice for board hire, it’s a walk to beginner’s bay for better hire. It actually should be criminal to charge the amount this hostel is charging. WIFI WAS NON-EXISTENT, kitchen was full of ants, WATER PRESSURE WAS WEAKER THAN A DRIPPING TAP, showers weren’t working for several days. I’ve stayed in places for half the price that had better facilities then this joint. I don’t normally write reviews but am doing so to prevent people from staying at a place that advertises lies. Even now looking at the overall rating I would give this place a 2/10.
We booked 2 nights on hostelworld and when we arrived had to pay double te price. The employee said it was ‘the fault from hostelworld’, but we already paid a part of the money online. We refused to pay double the price on the spot and left. No friendly staff at all.

- L'emplacement de la chambre double: nous devons passer dans la salle entre les tables d'un restaurant pour accéder à la porte d'entrée de notre chambre qui est en plein milieu. Il fait chaud mais la seule fenêtre donne sur cette salle de restaurant. Le ventilateur est très bruyant pour dormir mais pas possible d'ouvrir la fenêtre, sinon nous voyons et entendons les gens manger et la musique ... Le matelas du lit est sûrement vieux, je tombais du côté de mon compagnon du fait de la différence de poids, nous ne pouvions pas rester de notre côté. Nous avons passé une nuit difficile. Je n'ai pas pu essayé la salle de bains puisqu'il y avait un problème d'eau pendant la seule nuit passée dans l'hôtel. Attention il faut arriver entre 1pm et 4pm, cela fait très peu lorsque l'on voyage d'un endroit à un autre en terme de timing précis. Prix de la chambre honteux contrairement à la qualité/ prix des autres endroits que l'on a pu faire. Nous avons tout de même eu un discount suite aux différents problèmes rencontrés.

Great location, weird vibe. There was one guy working and he was shirtless just hanging in the hammock and kitchen the whole day no reception so not sure what he does all day. The facilities were not clean. Spend the money and book somewhere else.
The location is perfect, it’s one of the closest hostels to the surf breaks but the vibe isn’t good. No one else was checked in the first few nights I was there so there was no social vibe at all. The WiFi didn’t work, the power was out most of the time, and the water didn’t always work so we couldn’t use the bathrooms. The owner gave off a very standoffish feel, almost as if he didn’t want you there. Super weird.
Check in was done by a random guy who didn’t know much, none of the staff members ever introduced themselves unless directly approached. They didn’t provide any information about the place, hardly any boards to rent, no atmosphere. The hostel building and rooms are really nice and could have so much potential if only the staff wasn’t just acting like being on holiday. For few nights there was hardly any water, wifi was basically non existent. The cleaning lady however did an excellent job!...

Idéalement placé pour aller surfer et profiter des évènements le soir. Hostel parfait pour les backpackers cherchant un prix abordable, une cuisine bien équipée et ambiance reposante. Le personnel est très sympathique et à l'écoute, j'ai passé une excellente semaine !
Good spot. Right next to the two best and cheapest food spots also the shop, Short walk to big surf for sunset but more importantly it’s a shorter walk than most hostels to the surf breaks south. I found the vibe friendly but not very social but thats more of a “luck of the draw” situation I had mates staying at other hostels so wasn’t a concern

Mi estadía en Popoyoloco fue excelente. El personal es muy amable y están muy atentos a tu bienestar. Siempre dispuestos a ayudar y con la mejor predisposición. El hostel esta permanentemente limpio ya que barren y trapean varias veces al día, y para variar al frente del hostel esta Nica Grill, que ofrece comida de primer nivel a un precio accesible. Defenitely better than the ratings! It's a clean place and the owner/manager is super nice. Only the toilets don't really flush well...
Great place to stay, staff is lovely and really good location with everything you need within walking distance. Great food aswell at the nica grill we ate here most nights!
Wie aus vorherigen Bewertungen herausgegangen ist, verstehe ich nicht wieso das Hostel keine bessere Bewertung hat! Es ist sehr sauber, das Personal super freundlich und die Zimmer sind top. Man kann dort super entspannen und es ist direkt am Strand!
Such a lovely place to stay in Popoyo! Walking distance to all the breaks, and very close to lots of local spots to eat at. Friendly staff and very chill accommodation with great communal space to hang out.
What a special place this is❤️ Ofelia and the team at Popoyo loco & Nica grill are beyond amazing.Ignore reviews about the power outages & poor water pressure its town wide and happens at every accommodation. That is happening in a small,remote beach town and shouldn't reflect the hostel. - So many things need changing. The shower was either no pressure/not working or flooded. Poos floating in the toilets that can’t flush. The private double room window goes into the restaurant, very weird and can’t get natural air in the room. Not a single hook in the room for hanging stuff, especially bad for a beach location. Everything in the kitchen is so old and disgusting, cutting boards brown from dirt. You have to pay for towels even when booking a double room. No vibe, no music playing or anything. Staff didn’t tell us any information or show us around and flat out ignored me when greeting them. The place was empty and no wonder. It’s a shame the hostel itself looks nice and good location, just needs new management and fixing, a few events to make it fun.
I don’t know why this hostel isn’t rated at least a 9. If it was bad in the past, they’ve clearly improved substantially. Everything is spotless, staff are extremely kind and all the guests are social. Extended the stay 5x because Popoyo is so beautiful and the hostel is right on the beach.
Great place to stay. Location is perfect, close to great restaurants. Staff were kind. The owner was very helpful. Clean and well equipped kitchen. Very spacious rooms. Be aware water and water pressure is inconsistent in the bathrooms/showers. Otherwise a perfect stay. Gracias

there was no kitchen but in total one of the prettiest hostels i have ever seen. super chill atmosphere
+ Jolie auberge pour le week-end, emplacement proche de la rivière à traverser pour aller au spot de surf. Literie confortable. Cuisine partagée. Chambre double et salle de bain individuelle. Supérette proche pour faire de petites courses (attention aux prix).
- Il y a une salle de jeu très bruyante au dessus de la salle à manger, donc si on veut manger calmement ou travailler mais que d’autres personnes jouent bruyamment au ballon, c’est compliqué. Les serviettes de douche ne sont pas fournies. Au prix de la chambre, j’aurais aimé qu’elles le soient. La gérante m’en a pourtant donné une pour deux, gratuitement. L’accès à la plage est super mais un feu de bois de flotté non géré avait été allumé très près des arbres, c’était inquiétant Et dérangeant pour les odeurs de fumée. Les ventilateurs sur pied étaient extrêmement poussiéreux. Il manque des paternes pour suspendre les serviettes de douche et de plage et les faire sécher.
