Official advisories for Algeria still include avoid-all-travel warnings for multiple border areas as of 2026-05-15; the newest listed update is Germany's 2026-05-14 partial travel warning.
What Is Being Advised
Avoid all travel to the Algeria border zones covered by the strictest official advisories. If your route involves overland crossings, desert segments, remote border provinces, or the Tindouf/Sahrawi camp area, check the exact road, crossing, and province before paying for transport; several inputs support skipping or postponing those plans.
For the rest of Algeria, advice remains elevated. Official pages cite terrorism and kidnapping risk, and some governments advise avoiding non-essential travel in named provinces or using heightened caution countrywide.
Check the latest official page before booking or moving between regions. The advisories used here were checked on 2026-05-14, with source pages last updated between 2024-11-27 and 2026-05-14.
Where exactly this applies
- Morocco border: Canada advises avoiding all travel within 50 km because of increased military presence, an unstable security situation, and difficulty identifying the exact border location.
- Mali, Mauritania, Niger: Canada advises avoiding all travel within 200 km. Germany, the UK, New Zealand, Japan, and others also flag border areas.
- Libya and Tunisia: Canada advises avoiding all travel within 50 km, except land travel to or from Tunisia via the N44 highway and Oum Tboul border crossing, where it advises a high degree of caution. The UK advises against all travel within 30 km of the Libya border and parts of the Tunisia border, with softer advice for other parts of the Tunisia border.
- Western Sahara and Mauritania border area: Germany warns against travel to border areas with Mauritania and Western Sahara.
- Tindouf / Sahrawi camps: Spain says not to travel to the Sahrawi camps in Tindouf because of kidnapping and attack threats.
- Italian named areas: Italy marks Guelma, Souk Ahras, Tiaret, El Tarf, Annaba, Saida, Chlef, Mila, Skikda, Batna, El Oued, Tizi Ouzou, Constantine, Illizi, Ghardaia, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Bejaia, Jijel, Adrar, Khenchela, Bouira, Tebessa, Tamanrasset, Ayn Defla, Boumerdes, Sidi Bel Abbes, Medea, and the Tindouf refugee camps for particular caution.

How The Advisories Split The Map
The highest-risk pattern is concentrated around borders. Germany's 2026-05-14 advisory covers border areas with Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, and Western Sahara. Canada's 2026-05-04 page names the Morocco border, wider zones near Mali, Mauritania, and Niger, and narrower zones near Libya and Tunisia.
The UK's 2026-04-15 advice names a 30 km zone along Algeria's borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali, and Niger, plus Tunisia in Illizi, Ouargla, and the Chaambi mountains area. It gives softer advice for the rest of the Algeria-Tunisia border within 30 km.
Japan's 2025-03-28 advisory uses four levels for different listed areas: Level 4 evacuation / do not travel, Level 3 do not travel, Level 2 avoid non-essential travel, and Level 1 heightened caution. New Zealand's 2024-11-27 page sets Algeria at increased caution overall and says not to travel within 50 km of border regions with Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Tunisia.
France, Switzerland, Spain, and Italy use regional systems. France marks Algeria security zones in red, orange, and yellow. Switzerland advises against travel to individual parts of the country, including remote Kabylie mountain regions and named provinces or border areas. Spain warns against certain border-zone movements and travel to the Sahrawi camps in Tindouf. Italy lists multiple provinces and regions under particular caution, with advice ranging from avoid non-essential travel to heightened caution.
How To Read This For A Trip
If your plan touches a border zone, search your government's current Algeria page for the exact road, crossing, province, or desert segment. The official inputs support avoiding or postponing multiple border-area trips; they do not support a general claim that one transport mode is safer across Algeria.
If your trip is limited to urban Algeria, the advice is less severe but still elevated. Canada cites terrorism and kidnapping risk for Algeria generally. Australia lists Algeria at exercise a high degree of caution. Ireland lists Algeria as High Degree of Caution and notes that air, sea, and land borders are partially open.
If your plan depends on a land border crossing, do a same-day advisory check before committing money. Canada gives one narrow Tunisia exception via the N44 highway and Oum Tboul border crossing, but still advises a high degree of caution there.
Source Notes
The strongest individual advisories here are regional avoid-all-travel notices, not one identical countrywide instruction. That distinction changes the itinerary question: Algiers and a desert route near Libya, Mali, Niger, Mauritania, Tunisia, Morocco, or Western Sahara sit on different official risk maps.
Official pages update on different cycles. The newest update in the source material is Germany's 2026-05-14 notice. Canada's page was updated on 2026-05-04, Australia's on 2026-04-28, the UK's and France's on 2026-04-15, Switzerland's on 2026-02-27, Italy's on 2026-01-27, Ireland's on 2025-09-24, Japan's on 2025-03-28, and New Zealand's on 2024-11-27.
