Official travel advice for Chad remains at avoid-all-travel level for major areas and, in several notices, for the country as a whole as of 2026-05-15; N'Djamena is included in some countrywide non-essential-travel warnings.
What Is Being Advised
Avoid all travel to the highest-risk areas named across official advisories: Lake Chad and Lac, border zones, northern provinces including Borkou, Ennedi and Tibesti, parts of Kanem, and eastern regions near Sudan including Sila, Wadi Fira and Ouaddai. Some official advice applies the avoid-travel warning to Chad generally.
Postpone non-essential trips to Chad unless you have a specific duty, local support, and an up-to-date security plan. Several advisories include N'Djamena in countrywide non-essential-travel warnings, so do not treat the capital as a clean exception.
If you are already in Chad, check your own government's latest notice, local authority instructions, and departure options. If your advisory includes an evacuation warning for your area, act on that instead of treating the situation as ordinary heightened caution.
Where exactly this applies
Named high-risk areas vary by advisory, but the repeated geography is clear:
- Within 30 km of international borders.
- Lake Chad / Lac province.
- Northern Chad: Tibesti, Borkou, Ennedi Ouest, Ennedi Est, and broader Ennedi areas.
- Kanem, including western Kanem and Nokou in some advice.
- Eastern Chad near Sudan: Sila, Wadi Fira and Ouaddai, with Abéché excluded in one Canadian regional warning.
- Border areas with Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, the Central African Republic, Libya and Sudan.
- France also names Bardaï, Fada, Amdjarass, Bol, Abéché and Bongor in its security-zone summary.

Why Chad Is Being Flagged
The repeated risk language is security-related: terrorism, kidnapping, armed groups, violent crime, civil unrest, and border instability. New Zealand names terrorism, kidnapping, armed groups and landmines in border and regional warnings. Canada cites terrorism, violent crime and civil unrest for Chad overall, including N'Djamena.
Spain adds route-level hazards: armed road attacks, night travel risk, Lake Chad/Boko Haram concerns, and a cholera outbreak in an eastern refugee camp. Those details support postponing non-essential travel and checking route conditions for essential movement. They do not support a blanket claim that one transport mode removes the risk.
Where Advisories Differ
Some governments warn against travel to Chad broadly. Australia lists Chad as "Do not travel" on its destinations index. Switzerland advises against travel to Chad. Japan keeps Chad under Level 3 for no travel and Level 4 for evacuation/no travel in listed areas.
Germany, Canada and New Zealand use regional splits. Germany warns against travel to Lake Chad, several border areas, northern Borkou/Tibesti/Ennedi areas near Libya, and eastern Chad near Sudan. Germany advises against non-essential travel elsewhere, including N'Djamena. Canada advises avoiding all travel to specific regions and border belts, and avoiding non-essential travel to Chad overall. New Zealand advises avoiding non-essential travel overall and gives do-not-travel advice for named regions and border areas.
Italy's current Viaggiare Sicuri entries are softer than the strongest notices. They mark Chad and several regions, including Sila, Lake, Ouaddai, Kanem, Wadi Fira, Ennedi, Borkou and Tibesti, for heightened caution and local-authority instructions. For traveler decisions, the stronger avoid-travel advisories are the binding signal.
Practical Read For Travelers
For essential travel, verify the exact province and border distance before moving. The repeated 30 km border-band warning matters because Chad touches Libya, Sudan, the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger, and several advisories treat border areas as separate high-risk zones.
Use the regional notice for each province or border belt on your route. A country-level summary that sounds moderate may still include an avoid-all-travel warning for the area you plan to enter.
