Bomb, drone and 24-27 April explosive attacks in Cauca, Valle del Cauca and Nariño, plus kidnapping and violence near Venezuela-border departments.

Several official advisories place parts of Colombia under avoid-all-travel advice as of 2026-05-15, with current warnings tied to Venezuela border areas, illegal armed groups, April explosive attacks in Cauca/Valle del Cauca/Nariño, and disruption before the 31 May 2026 presidential election round.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to the Colombian areas covered by the highest official restrictions. Use heightened caution elsewhere in the country and check whether your exact route crosses a restricted department, border zone, highway, or city carve-out before you book or move.

Check the newest official page if your itinerary includes Venezuela border areas, Cauca, Valle del Cauca, Nariño, Huila, Arauca, Caquetá, Chocó, Putumayo, Cesar, Norte de Santander, La Guajira, Buenaventura, Yarumal, or overland travel through affected departments. If you are already in Colombia, add slack around routes with recent attacks, demonstrations, police or military targets, armed-group activity, or border restrictions.

Use heightened caution for city travel outside the named highest-restriction areas. Current official themes include crime, scopolamine incidents, demonstrations, terrorism warnings, health alerts, and instructions from local authorities. A destination city name gives too little route risk detail. Verify the road, border crossing, and timing.

Where exactly this applies
  • Venezuela border areas: Germany warns against travel to immediate Venezuela border areas in Norte de Santander and Cesar. Ireland strongly advises against all travel to Colombia's border regions with Venezuela. The UK advises against non-essential travel to all of Norte de Santander, including Cúcuta.
  • Southwestern and Pacific departments: Germany urgently advises against travel to Cauca, Valle del Cauca, Nariño, and Huila after bomb and drone attacks before the 31 May 2026 presidential election round. The UK reports explosive attacks between 24-27 April 2026 in Cauca, Valle de Cauca, and Nariño, including one device on the Pan-American Highway.
  • Canada lists avoid-all-travel and avoid-non-essential-travel areas across departments and border zones, with exclusions for some cities and towns. Check the Canadian page for the exact current carve-outs before treating a department name as a blanket rule.
  • Italy marks La Guajira, Buenaventura, Norte de Santander, Cauca, Putumayo, Cesar, Arauca, Nariño, Caquetá, Yarumal, and Chocó as areas needing above-baseline caution.
  • France uses security-zone labels ranging from formally discouraged areas to reinforced vigilance, plus active updates on attacks, scopolamine, health risks, and Venezuela-related regional risk.

Why the Advice Is Elevated

Germany's 14 May 2026 update warns against immediate Venezuela border areas in Norte de Santander and Cesar, and urgently advises against travel to Cauca, Valle del Cauca, Nariño, and Huila after bomb and drone attacks before Colombia's 31 May 2026 presidential election round.

The UK 28 April 2026 notice gives the clearest route-level clue: between 24-27 April, several explosive devices were detonated in Cauca, Valle de Cauca, and Nariño, including near military bases and police stations. One device exploded on the Pan-American Highway, causing deaths, injuries, damage, and disruption.

Canada's 6 May 2026 Colombia advice ties its strongest regional warnings to kidnapping and violence from illegal armed groups and other criminal organizations. It also lists avoid-non-essential-travel areas for drug-related criminal activity by illegal armed groups and criminal organizations, including border zones and department-level carve-outs.

France keeps active Colombia notices on its security advice and latest alerts, including attacks in Cauca and Valle del Cauca, Venezuela-related risk, scopolamine attacks, and epidemic vigilance. Spain's travel advice cites common crime, guerrillas, narcotrafficking, irregular armed groups, volatile peripheral departments, and recent scopolamine incidents in tourist areas.

Italy's Viaggiare Sicuri page uses above-baseline caution language for the named places in this source set. Its list overlaps with several higher-risk departments named elsewhere: Arauca, Cauca, Caquetá, Cesar, Chocó, La Guajira, Nariño, Norte de Santander, Putumayo, Buenaventura, and Yarumal.

How to Use This If You Are Already Going

Run three checks before you lock the trip: destination, route, and timing. A city excluded from a department-level warning can still require a road approach through a restricted area. A border warning can matter on a transit day. Election-period attacks and demonstrations can change a route faster than an accommodation page updates.

For Medellín arrival logistics, use HostelPunk's Medellín first 24 hours guide. This page is for the national advisory decision: whether your Colombia route touches an area official sources tell travelers to avoid.

Source Notes

The strongest traveler-facing level in the current inputs is avoid all travel. National heightened-caution labels apply to areas beyond the highest-restriction zones. Regional avoid-all-travel advice remains the controlling warning for those named areas.

Japan's Colombia risk levels are dated 8 October 2024 and were checked in this advisory set on 14 May 2026. New Zealand's destination page is dated 28 November 2024. For route timing, prefer newer country pages when they cover the same region more specifically.
