Ecuador has avoid-all-travel advisories for specific border areas as of 2026-05-15, alongside wider warnings for violent crime, armed violence, states of exception, curfews, land-border restrictions, and landmines.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to the hard-stop border zones first. Current official advice says to avoid the area within 20 km of the Colombia border in Carchi, Esmeraldas, and Sucumbios, except for the Panamerican Highway connection to the official Tulcan/Ipiales crossing, and to avoid the area within 2 km of the Peru border in Chinchipe, El Pangui, Nangaritza, and Yantzaza in Zamora-Chinchipe because of landmines and unmarked minefields (Canada travel advice).

Avoid non-essential travel where official advisories use that level. Current notices include Ecuador overall in one advisory, Guayaquil outside harder restricted areas in another, and the Coastal Region provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabi, Santa Elena, Guayas, El Oro, Los Rios, and Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas in another; the UK advice excludes airside transit inside Guayaquil Airport from its Coastal Region restriction (Ireland DFA, New Zealand SafeTravel, UK FCDO).

If you are already in Ecuador, check local instructions before moving between provinces or using land borders. Official notices in April and May 2026 mention a 60-day state of emergency renewed on 2026-04-02, curfews from 2026-05-03 to 2026-05-18, and restrictions at land borders with Colombia and Peru (UK FCDO, Viaggiare Sicuri, France Diplomatie).

Where exactly this applies
  • Colombia border: avoid all travel within 20 km of the border in Carchi, Esmeraldas, and Sucumbios; Canada notes an exception for the Panamerican Highway connection to the official Tulcan/Ipiales crossing.
  • Peru border: avoid all travel within 2 km of the border in Chinchipe, El Pangui, Nangaritza, and Yantzaza in Zamora-Chinchipe because of landmines and unmarked minefields.
  • Coastal Region: avoid non-essential travel to Esmeraldas, Manabi, Santa Elena, Guayas, El Oro, Los Rios, and Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas under the UK advisory; airside transit inside Guayaquil Airport is excluded from that UK restriction.
  • Guayaquil: New Zealand says avoid non-essential travel in Guayaquil except where harder do-not-travel advice applies.
  • Spain advises caution nationwide and says to abstain from travel to coastal provinces and areas bordering Colombia.
  • France marks parts of Ecuador above ordinary baseline advice, including named references to Quito, crime, volcanic risk, seismic risk, and tsunami risk.
  • Italy marks several places for above-baseline caution, including Quito, Guayaquil, Cantone di Esmeraldas, the Colombia border strip, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Reventador, and Guagua Pichincha.

Current Details

Canada's 2026-05-08 advice gives the sharpest geography: drug trafficking and criminal activity near the Colombia border, and landmines or unmarked minefields near the Peru border in listed Zamora-Chinchipe cantons (Canada travel advice).

The UK advisory, updated 2026-04-29, says a 60-day state of emergency was renewed on 2026-04-02 because of internal disturbance and armed violence. It also advises against all but essential travel to the Coastal Region provinces listed above (UK FCDO).

Italy's current notices mention internal armed conflict, states of exception, border restrictions, flight and airport disruption, and a curfew in nine Ecuadorian provinces and four cantons from 2026-05-03 to 2026-05-18. The article input does not list those nine provinces or four cantons, so verify the current local order before night travel or intercity transfers (Viaggiare Sicuri).

Spain's 2026-04-07 advice cites prison violence, states of exception, curfews or rights restrictions, and dengue risk. France has active alerts for a state of exception and restrictions at land borders with Colombia and Peru (Spain travel recommendations, France alerts).

Before Booking Or Moving

If your route touches the Colombia border, the listed Zamora-Chinchipe cantons near Peru, Guayaquil, or the Coastal Region, check the latest official notice for your passport country and the current local rules for the exact province or canton. The advisories use different geography, and some restrictions are narrower than the whole country.

If your Ecuador plan is non-essential and flexible, postpone the affected legs. The official inputs support avoiding or postponing specific regions; they do not support a blanket claim that flying, buses, or any other transport mode is safer.

If you are already in Ecuador, verify same-day rules before land-border crossings, late-night movement, and province-to-province transfers while curfews or states of exception are active.

Source Notes

The advisories do not line up cleanly. Canada and Japan include avoid-all-travel or equivalent wording for specific listed areas; Ireland gives avoid-non-essential wording for Ecuador overall while also naming harder restricted border areas; Australia gives heightened-caution wording on its destination index; Italy and France include multiple current notices with place-specific caution, border, curfew, and state-of-exception details.

Some official pages are current but not new. Japan's listed Ecuador updates are dated 2024-06-03 and were checked in this article input on 2026-05-14; New Zealand's page is dated 2024-11-28 and was also checked on 2026-05-14. Use those as standing official positions, then check the latest local Ecuadorian instructions for same-day movement.
