Several official advisories still tell travelers to avoid all travel to parts of India as of 2026-05-15, especially Jammu and Kashmir and areas near the Pakistan border. India as a whole is mostly under heightened-caution advice, with some regional avoid-non-essential-travel advice.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel where official advisories place Jammu and Kashmir, the India-Pakistan border area, or named northeastern states under their highest restriction. One advisory excludes travel to or within Ladakh from its Jammu and Kashmir warning.

Avoid all travel within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border where listed. Official advisories name border areas in Gujarat, Punjab, and Rajasthan, and cite the security situation, landmines, and unexploded ordnance. The Attari-Wagah / Wagah-Attari border crossing is listed as closed.

Avoid non-essential travel to Manipur where your government says so. Other advisories use stronger wording for Manipur, and some also flag Nagaland or parts of the northeast.

Use heightened caution elsewhere in India. Current advisories cite terrorism, civil unrest, crime, air travel disruption linked to Middle East escalation, local demonstrations or strikes, and regional security risks. Check your government's India page before booking overland routes, border crossings, or trips into the northeast.

Where exactly this applies
  • Jammu and Kashmir: listed by multiple advisories at avoid-all-travel or equivalent levels. One advisory excludes Ladakh from its Jammu and Kashmir avoid-all-travel advice.
  • India-Pakistan border: areas within 10 km of the border are named in multiple advisories; one specifically lists Gujarat, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
  • Attari-Wagah / Wagah-Attari crossing: listed as closed by two advisories.
  • Manipur: listed for avoid non-essential travel by one advisory; others use stronger wording.
  • Nagaland: listed by one advisory against travel; another flags areas bordering Myanmar for avoid non-essential travel; Italy marks the Nagaland region for particular caution because of demonstrations and strikes.
  • Northeast and east-central areas: New Zealand names areas of Assam bordering Bangladesh, Chhattisgarh, and other regional risks. Italy marks Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Darjeeling district, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Odisha, West Midnapore district, and several Jammu and Kashmir locations for particular caution.

Trip Decision Notes

The highest restrictions are concentrated in specific areas: Jammu and Kashmir, the Pakistan border, Manipur, Nagaland, and parts of the northeast. Six governments in the advisory set carry avoid-all-travel or equivalent highest-level restrictions somewhere in India. India-wide advice remains mostly at heightened caution, with some regional avoid-non-essential-travel advice.

If a backpacker route depends on the Attari-Wagah crossing, treat that crossing as unavailable until the latest official page says otherwise. If a route runs near the Pakistan border in Gujarat, Punjab, or Rajasthan, check the 10 km restriction before assuming a map route is usable.

For ordinary city travel, official advice still calls for caution. Canada says to exercise a high degree of caution throughout India because of terrorist attack risk. Australia lists India at exercise a high degree of caution. New Zealand includes New Delhi and Mumbai in its increased-caution advice because of terrorism, civil unrest, and crime.

Source Differences Worth Knowing

Canada is explicit about scope: avoid all travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, excluding Ladakh, and avoid all travel within 10 km of the Pakistan border in Gujarat, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Its India page was updated on 2026-05-05 and checked for this article on 2026-05-14.

The UK advises against all travel within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border and says the Wagah-Attari border crossing is closed. Its India warning page was updated on 2026-04-09.

Germany updated its India page on 2026-05-14. It warns against travel to Jammu and Kashmir, strongly advises against travel to Manipur, and advises against travel to the immediate Pakistan border.

Switzerland published its current note on 2025-06-10. It advises against travel in the entire Pakistan border region, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, and Nagaland.

Japan lists multiple advisory levels for India, including Level 4 evacuation / do-not-travel advice, Level 2 avoid-non-essential-travel advice, and Level 1 heightened-caution advice. Use the Japanese page for exact regional scope before relying on it.

France and Italy provide operational notices. France carries current notices on air links affected by the Middle East situation, travel and stay facilitation after the Middle East crisis, Nipah virus in West Bengal, an explosion near Delhi's Red Fort, West Bengal elections, and satellite/GPS communication devices. Italy lists a current India security update and marks several areas for particular caution.

Before You Move

Check the newest official advisory for your passport country before paying for a route that touches Jammu and Kashmir, the Pakistan border, Manipur, Nagaland, Assam border areas, Chhattisgarh, or long overland legs through eastern and northeastern India.

If your itinerary includes the Attari-Wagah crossing, verify the crossing status on the day you plan to move. Canada and the UK both list it as closed in the advisory inputs checked on 2026-05-14.

For city-only trips, the official pattern supports heightened caution for India as a whole. Keep flight slack in the plan: the UK and France both carry notices tied to Middle East escalation and air travel disruption.
