  • aktualisiert 2026-05-15

Official advisories still say to avoid all travel to Niger as of 2026-05-15. The newest listed update is Germany's 2026-05-14 warning, which says German nationals should leave and consular help cannot currently be guaranteed.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to Niger. If you are already in the country, check whether commercial departure is available, follow local instructions, and keep embassy or consular contact details current.

Treat Niamey as inside the risk map. UK advice says kidnapping risk applies to foreign nationals throughout Niger, including the capital, and terrorist attacks remain a risk nationwide.

Avoid planning overland transit through Niger based only on border-area risk. Multiple official advisories use nationwide avoid-all-travel wording. Sources support nationwide risk mapping.

Where exactly this applies
  • Nationwide: Germany, Canada, the UK, Australia, Ireland, Switzerland, New Zealand, Japan, Spain, and other listed official advisories describe avoid-all-travel or equivalent advice for Niger.
  • Niamey: UK and US-linked security-alert wording says foreign nationals face kidnapping risk in the capital as well as elsewhere in Niger.
  • Diffa region: France has an active April 7, 2026 alert for kidnapping risk in Diffa.
  • Outside Niamey: Spain says travel to Niger is absolutely discouraged and specifically discourages all travel outside Niamey.
  • France's zone-based Niger page names terrorism, banditry and crime, road risk, and flood risk.

Why The Advice Is This Severe

Germany's Niger travel warning, updated 2026-05-14, warns against all travel and calls on German nationals to leave. It also says German embassy staff in Niamey were temporarily relocated because of the security situation, and that consular help cannot currently be guaranteed.

Canada's 2026-05-06 Niger advisory says to avoid all travel because of political instability and the risks of terrorism and kidnapping. It tells travelers to consider leaving Niger by commercial means.

The UK's Niger warning, updated 2026-02-17, says reported terrorist and criminal kidnappings of foreign nationals have increased in 2026. It says terrorist attacks remain an ongoing risk throughout Niger, including Niamey, and links the current instability to the July 2023 military coup.

Spain's 2026-02-09 advice says travel to Niger is absolutely discouraged. Its summary describes an extremely serious security situation, increasing terrorist activity, very high kidnapping risk for foreigners, and all travel outside Niamey as discouraged.

Japan's MOFA notice, updated 2024-06-04, includes nationwide Level 4 wording for Niger: evacuate and do not travel. It also lists one area at Level 3, with do-not-travel wording. Both entries cite continuing security risks.

Specific Alerts To Know

France has two active April 7, 2026 alerts on its Niger page: one on the security situation in Niger, and one on kidnapping risk in the Diffa region. Its zone-based security page, updated 2026-04-15, marks areas as formally discouraged and names terrorism, banditry and crime, road risk, and flood risk.

Italy's Viaggiare Sicuri Niger page includes an April 29, 2026 update concerning demonstrations or civil disruption. Its February 17, 2026 security entry also marks Niger for above-baseline caution and says travel should be avoided.

The UK page includes a US Embassy Niamey security alert from October 22, 2025, warning that American citizens are at risk of kidnapping throughout Niger, including Niamey. The UK page says British citizens face the same risk.

Source Notes

The official advice is unusually aligned: every issuing government listed here advises avoiding all travel to Niger or uses equivalent highest-level wording. A UK-hosted security-alert note uses softer wording. The UK's main Niger advice is against all travel.
