The Black Elephant Hostel

While overall it was clean, the mattress was like sleeping on an abused college futon with lumps !! This was the studio, their top level accommodation! Private room with balcony is nice, but I don't want to sleep on a potato sack! Plus I was told that you can smoke pot on the porch all you want, but not a cigarette! WTF?!!

Great common area and bathrooms, bedrooms are super basic though. Overpriced but not a bad place.

The Black Elephant Hostel is located just a couple blocks away from the Downtown section of Portland which is great for tourism and sightseeing. The facilities were as expected for a hostel with a mix of a full bath in the room and several full baths available on each floor. The staff was very helpful with information about the area and the operations of the Hostel itself.

Mattress was a little rough to be honest, but was overall a very comfortable stay. Late check in was very easy and provided clear instructions on what I needed to do. Overall good vibes and very comparable to hostels I've stayed at in europe

this hostel was fantastic! staff were enthusiastic and responsive, shared spaces were cozy and clean, extra linens were readily available, the expectations weren’t over the top or confusing, and get this - the kitchen had a dishwasher for disinfecting! no dingy sponges to clean shared mugs or silverware! fridge sitch was well organized w a bin system. full bathrooms were cleaned and restocked daily. Lastly, this hostel was renovated and designed w so much tlc. don’t miss this one! 🐘💕

I had an amazing time at this hostel. Beds are comfortable and rooms are clean, bathrooms are clean and they have a sink in the hall for convenience and the common area was really welcoming and plenty to spots to sit and socialize. Staff was friendly and answered questions I had. It was in a great area as well. Will definitely stay again.

Our stay was wonderful! Aaron who checked us in was so friendly and helpful with all our questions. The hostel has such a great vibe and is in a great location. Will definitely come back in the future!

This one was fantastic. You can’t beat the location, it’s such an easy walk to the pier to take the ferry, and it’s an easy ride to the airport or train station. You’re right next to some great food spots too. Beds were comfy and bathrooms were cleaned regularly. Only downside is the dorm rooms can get stuffy even with the air conditioning and the windows open. It’s a bit musty because the steam from the shower has no where to go.

Excellent stay! Bed was comfy, locks were provided, check in instructions were really clear. The full kitchen was excellent, the garden was really pleasant. Staff were super helpful and friendly. Good common space to hang out. Bathroom was great, the shower was really good. I especially liked all the dr bronners soap in the washrooms! Only thing that would slightly improve the stay would be if the beds each had privacy curtains to help with light but it wasn’t an issue. Hope I can return soon!

Absolutely amazing! Extremely friendly staff, amazing location, and I loved the little courtyard garden. The kitchen was well equipped and the shared living space was cozy and vibrant.

Wow! Best Hostel stay. Staff were so kind. AND! It was so clean. They clearly cared about you having a good time during your stay. There were enough bathrooms. Cannot recommend enough.

This hostel was fantastic for exploring Portland. Easily accessible free street parking nearby too! The beds were super comfy, and the staff was extremely nice.

Great experience! Booked the private room for a long weekend trip away from Boston. Room was quite small (as pictured) but was perfect for our needs. Awesome common space to hang out in, immaculately clean shared bathrooms and common spaces. Super eclectic style throughout and the staff were lovely and helpful. Had some issues with our door lock upon arrival and one other time during our stay, but this was fixed quickly both times and caused minimal trouble. Excellent location, would book again.

This is a great stay for a small weekend gateway especially if you are single! Will come back again if ever in Portland

Over a fall weekend, I met wonderful people from Georgia, Ghana, Northern California, Shanghai, and New England. It's easy to get tips for day trips with a home base here. This is a convenient place to stay. I enjoyed the Portland Food Co-op, Peaks Island, and Mayor Baxter Forest.
