Cameron Highlands Gem — With Honest Ownership That’s Rare to Find! Okay, confession first: I don’t usually write reviews, and when I do, I tend to go all in (so forgive the length—but this place deserves it). I first found Hikers Sleep Port after a bad experience at another hostel in Malaysia that didn’t even have lockers. I was looking for a safer vibe, and this one stood out—plus, the ratings were solid. And wow, what a difference! Locker was there (though I didn’t even use it because I felt safe). The hostel has clear “no non-guest” policies and keycard-only entry. Everything’s no-shoes-inside with beautiful wooden floors and tidy shoe racks. Felt like home from the moment I stepped in. Now, here’s where I’ll pause and say—I saw some recent reviews here about bed bugs in the tents. I hadn’t read these earlier, but seeing them now, I actually respect the owners even more. When I arrived, they were redoing the whole tent area, and I didn’t think much of it. But now I realize—they were already taking action. That’s rare. A lot of places try to hide or delay when issues like this happen. Not here. Props to the owner for being upfront and proactive. Back to my stay—every part of this hostel feels intentionally designed. Kazza at reception gave great hiking tips and local insights. You can also book tours directly here, saving time and avoiding overpriced agencies in town. Their common area? Just wow. Cozy window seats, filtered drinking water straight from the tap, proper dish soap dispenser (small thing, but so smart), and a lovely book collection—I picked up a Malaysian history book and enjoyed it while watching the rain outside. Bathrooms? Spotless. Hot water worked like a charm. Toilet paper and Asian-style spray, of course. There’s a designated smoking area that’s so clean it felt more like a quiet garden spot. The dorm mattresses (not bunks) were surprisingly comfy—two pillows, great blankets. I’ve slept in hostels all over, and this setup beat a lot of the “fancy” ones in bigger cities. Honestly, it felt like a real bed in a private room. Oh, and light breakfast in the morning? Another win. Overall—yes, the tent situation clearly had issues recently. But from what I experienced and what I saw being actively handled, I trust this place is in good hands. Owners clearly care. If you’re coming to Cameron and want a thoughtful, soulful, hiker-friendly stay—this one still earns a big yes from me. Thanks Hikers Sleep Port team. I’ll be back 🌿

Really cute hostel in a great location close to the bus stop. The common area is very social and a light breakfast is served. Unfortunately, the hostel is dealing with bed bugs atm but the owner let me (and other guests) check out early, helped with laundry, provided other rooms not affected. Hopefully the issue is resolved asap.

Booked two nights in a "tent" room. Hostel initially seemed nice but found many BEDBUGS crawling everywhere when i tried to go to sleep. Got moved to a different area of the hostel and tried to sleep. Second day many other travelers found bedbugs and myself and about 8 other people left. The owner then cancelled everyone's reservation so we were unable to leave reviews. It seems he is trying to cover up the problem instead of fixing it. I can't recommend this hostel unless you want to sleep with bedbugs.

I checked in and realized they had bedbugs. When mentioned and showed them evidence they didn’t react to it.

This is a good hostel, however we had to leave on the second night as several guests discovered that there were bed bugs in their tent. We would have appreciated better communication about this issue by the host. We understand that this is definitely not his fault, but we learned about it from other guests almost 24h after the first bug beds were discovered.

it’s a nice little hostel unfortunately after checking in I found out from other guests that there had been bedbugs in the room downstairs. The owner said the room had been “cleaned” that day, but wasn’t very understanding when I said I wanted to leave anyway. He only refunded one of the two nights which felt a bit unfair given the circumstances. From what I’ve heard he’s taking care of the bed bugs though.

BEDBUGS I stayed there 3 nights, in the third one I discovered that there were bedbugs on the bed and (after three days there) also in my clothes. The owner was very nice up to this point but when I approached him at 1 am in the morning (thats when i found them) he was very unpolite. He let me wait for 45 minutes even though i tried to talk with him and rang him he did not respond (even though i could hear him very clearly and knew he knows that something is wrong). I have tried to state the situation calmly and asked if he could wash the clothes and give me a new room. He was very angry, told my I have to keep quiet and acted as it was my fault. He gave me the room and he also washed the clothes which was good. But he was very rude, almost insulting and kept talking about how he has little sleep every night. It was a long discussion and in the end, I even cried (which he did not see anymore). The hostel definitely would have potential but I have never been talked to like that before and certainly no hostel or hotelstaff ever made me cry. As the bed in the second room also looked very dirty i slept on the floor and left the next day. I have to state positively that he washed my clothes so that I was sure, the bedbugs would not follow me.

Bed bugs! There was a bed bug sitting on my bedsheet in the tent-style accomodation after check-in on the 23rd of February. I was offered a tent next to it as an alternative, but didn‘t want to risk it. Still had to pay for the first night. I would have loved to stay, because the atmosphere was very nice and the staff was friendly.

Lovely place, easy to meet people. Unfortunately the beds are a bit stiff and I kept getting small bites everywhere from what I assumed were bed bugs. The place is not really nicely maintained and is a bit messy, could use a thourough clean up. The owner is very nice though !

My stay was good until the staff decided to fumigate the rooms with insecticide to kill bed bugs without telling any of the guests. I was in the chill out area on level two, and noticed a smell. Another guest said it was just cleaner; they had smelt it previously when staff were cleaning the coffee machine. I started coughing quite badly then noticed vapour coming through the floors. I asked staff what it was, who informed me they were spraying insecticide. 3 days later, I still feel ill.

I got severely bitten by bed bugs there, and I know for a fact I got it there because the first night I had booked the double private room with my friend and we were both fine. However, the second night (because of booking issues), we slept in the tents and I found the bed bug in the morning and later on the bites started to appear. The receptionist did not seem very surprised when I told her of the issue but they said they would take care of it. Also, I asked them to refund this second night’s stay because of this issue (only for my bed, and only for the one night), which I think is very reasonable and was denied.

I really rate this hostel but, just to warn future travellers, I did have bed bugs in my 'tent' . However, I told the staff, they were extremely good about it, moved me to a new bed, cleaned all the bedding/mattress and my clothes and were taking the matter very seriously (closing off and cleaning other tents too). Hopefully all the hard work they're doing means it won't be a problem in future!

The owner is very friendly and hospitable. Other staff member currently is a nice young man with slight special needs but is attentive once you get his attention. I stayed at the hostel for 4 nights and enjoyed my stay. I met awesome people there as well. It’s located close to the bus top and surrounded by nice restaurants. It’s a small town and everything is walking distance. You can also book tours, transportation and do laundry directly from the hostel. It’s a cozy place with a unique personality. There’s a lot of cool decor and instruments around. I was there when it was pretty empty (which I personally enjoyed) but the place can hold a lot of people. The showers have good water pressure. There’s also a tiny balcony upstairs. Breakfast is toast. I stayed in a tent and my one issue was I had bed bugs which bite me all over my body. The other people were not effected, only my tent. I had this issue the day before leaving. I did bring this the owners attention and she said she’d inspect / clean the tent. Overall this hostel is worth the stay.
