HIPPO Hostel & Cafe Bar

I wrongly booked a female dorm. The owner was not ready to make a refund or propose help to find an alternative. Luckily there was a cancellation so I could go the a room in the male dorm. The staff was also very nice and everything else was fine. I still put juste one star everywhere because of the treatment from the owner.

I paid for two nights but left after one. Incredibly noisy cramped wooden building. Even with earplugs I got NO sleep until 4AM and then still got woken repeatedly. There are signs saying there's no sound insulation and asking people to be quiet, but no one even attempted to be quiet. You could hear everyone carelessly stomping, crashing, and banging around, dropping stuff, slamming doors etc. all night long. All. Night. Long. It's not even a party hostel.

Our time in HIPPO hostel was disappointing. I don't think I ever paid to spend a night in a dirty frat house. We booked for 4 nights originally, but we left after one night. The main issue is that the current set of volunteers treat the place as free accommodation while they go out drinking/partying every night. Worst hostel ever! Front desk schedule is so bad. It’s supposed that travelers need more help in the morning and they start to work at 12!! You couldn’t ask any information because most of them are volunteers . I’m okay some hostels have volunteers but I mean you need to hire some local . It is the noisiest place I’ve ever stayed in, people running up and down the stairs, music being played very loudly past the time of 10pm, the time that is on every ‘no noise past’ sign. Staff member using the hair dryer right outside the dorm at midnight, two night in a row. Someone else drying their hair at 3am, talking so loudly. The noise just echos through the place and makes it very hard to sle...

Honestly wasn’t a whole lot to love here. Felt pretty rushed together and not a lot of thought. The curtains being on shower rods didn’t provide much privacy. Room was hot and loud sleeping was a little harder than usual. Location is okay, but not if you really want to get into the Japan night life and not wait for the first train at 5am

Only booked here as all other hostels were fully booked. As others have said, the hostel is pretty dirty for Japan standards. Only positives is the bed was reasonably comfortable (though my mattress was so worn out you can feel the springs). The shower was good when it worked but it didn't one of the times. Didn't get good vibes off the hostel staff and clothes must be dried outside.

This hostel's staffs are not helpful at all. Most staffs are foreigners, they just live there and clean the hostel to exchange for free housing. They don't have the hospitality service mindset. You are on your own when you stay at this hostel.

Sehr gutes Hostel mit netten Personal. Es ist nicht super Social und die Küche mit der Community Area war eher klein. Zimmer und Badezimmer sehr sauber.

The people that worked there were absolutely insufferable. You’re bag is pretty big to travel with? It’s 75 ltrs. One backhanded attitude attack after I took my other shoes out my bag and put them outside the room. The place was not very clean, and the atmosphere was a bit off. The water was also not warm (on purpose, to save up). No free coffee, no free towel. The beds were nice, but the bathroom felt a bit unhygienic. The showers were uncomfortable. The staff was very nice though! I also had to pay a fee because I reserved the women common room by mistake, and the owner made me pay more for this.

I would rate 6 stars if i could, but alas the website said no. Staff was cool, especially Harry. Great place you should drop everything you’re doing and stay here

Un bon séjour ! L’hostel, propre et bien situé, permet de découvrir la vie japonaise hors des grandes villes tout en restant proche des commerces et restaurants. Le personnel est gentil et serviable. La cuisine pourrait être mieux équipée, et l’escalier menant aux chambres peut être compliqué avec des valises, mais rien de rédhibitoire. Une bonne expérience, je reviendrai !

My stay at Hippo Hostel was suuuper chill. Amazingly friendly staff, good public transport connection, clean facilities and everyone I met in the hostel was super cool. It’s very new and they still have to figure some things out but all in all a 10/10 experience! :)

I have been to 7 hostels in Japan. this one was by far my favorite. they have a kitchen where you can cook and save some money.The staff is super friendly and helpful. I stayed here for two weeks and I would definitely come back.The only bad thing is they don't have a dryer to dry your stuff.

Had a lovely 2-night stay at Hippo Hostel. The hostel has a cozy atmosphere. I appreciate that it's not sterile and minimal like many other hostels these days. The private room doesn't have a lock, but it's Japan, so I didn't worry too much. There is a cafe and bar attached to the hostel, which is a very nice place to start the morning. Absolutely loved this hostel!! One of the nicest and cozy ones I’ve stayed in while traveling! Beds are super comfy and cozy. The showers are so warm. And they have the cutest cafe bar downstairs which has lots of card and board games. Yummy deserts and great coffee 😍 100% recommend. 3 to 5 minute walk from station and only 3 stops from main center! The staff are also super helpful, knowledgeable and fun! Ended up going out with some of them and was a brilliant night😍😍😍

Honestly weird vibes and odd location. However had a really nice common area. Probably would be livelier in Summer as we were there in the middle of winter. Definitely a bit out of the central city so consider if you want to be more central

Overall good hostel, would recommend. I think there can be better options but there are far worse ones. Located on the Korean market neighbourhood, on a back Alley, not far from the train station, being a good hostel with all the basic ammenities and comfort available. The staff was absolutely great and the shower was also amazing. The kitchen area looked very small, but I didn't use it as I took all my meals outside.
