Hotel Waterloo & Backpackers

Bed had bed bugs and we woke covered in bites. We were transferred to an upgraded room with an ensuite, but the bath was stained and dirty. The kitchen had no forks. The location is very convenient with bus stops close and the staff are friendly.

Rooms rather dingy - dust all over in dorm room, was in there as cleaner finished up after my stay and noticed that just pillowcases are replaced. Duvets have no cover, so they’re not replaced or cleaned, and mattresses are actually just a piece of foam with two fitted sheets over them which weren’t replaced. No bedbugs but that’s a small mercy. Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re trying to be very frugal, and definitely wouldn’t recommend for more than a couple days.

I got bed bugs in 3 different rooms! Even though the people on the reception were really nice about it and tried to help me, the manager kept telling me how it is so expensive for him to move me. He kept asking what he should do about it, like it was my job to figure it out. He didn’t even listen and it took days till they fumed the room and it got better. Didn’t even get a refund for the first nights.

If you care about hygiene then this is not the right place for you. Originally, I had booked 4 nights but ended up staying only 1 because my bed had bedbugs, I noticed I had some annoying bumps the next morning and sadly, that's the reason why I was feeling itchy during the night. Carpets are old and dirty, bed sheets just old; as I booked a female room, the blanket had some hair from the previous person that used it, I guess. Kitchen is big but with a rare smell, TV room is big as well but sofas are pretty old and look dirty. It's the worst place I've stayed in NZ, maybe it was good in its golden years, it seems that owners don't want to invest much and don't care about guests.

Was a smelly and very dirty place. The bed had bedbugs that occasioned me a very bad reaction on my skin. The room's floor was dirty and I had an episode of asthma.

Earlier in life, I was incarcerated in the Florida prison system. So I know what I'm talking about when I say that the Hotel Waterloo is worse than a Florida prison. Here are some things that happened to me and you can guess whether they occurred in prison or at the Waterloo... 1) I was warmly and politely greeted upon arrival 2) Someone else was sleeping in my assigned bed 3) Plumbing fixtures were leaky/non functional 4) Rooms smelled like feet, death and fear 5) I was bitten and my clothes contaminated by bed bugs Answer key: 1) prison, 2) Waterloo, 3) Waterloo, 4) Waterloo, 5) Waterloo If you have the choice, commit armed robbery in the state of Florida before staying at the Waterloo.
