Update after flaky response from Mayan Monkey: I brought it down to one star, rather than trying to find a way to get in touch with me and solve the situation they simply said they will try to do better next time, lack of professionalism and respect towards your customers. —— I have stayed in 60+ hostels across 40 countries, and this is by far the worst experience I’ve had. There is no atmosphere—meeting people is tough. No events, no effort to create any kind of social environment. Prices were also drastically reduced after I booked, which feels misleading and unfair. During my stay, I was bitten by bed bugs. The most serious issue was the tour they sold me. I paid $90 ($70 + $20 fee) for a “young, social” boat tour (20–30 y/o as promised). In reality, I was the only young person there. This is a clear misrepresentation. To make matters worse, other participants informed me they paid $50–60 for the same tour with all fees included. I also attempted to contact them via WhatsApp regarding these issues, and I received no response at all. The lack of communication only adds to the concern about how guests are treated. I’ve read responses from management saying they will “make sure this doesn’t happen again,” but that is not enough. This is not about future promises—it’s about addressing the harm and situation of the guest who has already been affected. Based on my experience, I strongly advise others to avoid booking any activities here, and I expect this to be taken seriously.

Worse, booked “tour” was a scam: I paid $90(70+20), others paid $50–60 (all included), and I was the only young person despite promises. Extremely boring. They profit by deceiving guests. Avoid at all costs. It’s a overcharge in my opinion. They just said sorry, but kept my $90 happily. You should compensate!

UPDATE 10/26/23. DO NOT STAY HERE! I STAYED HERE FOR A SECOND TIME AND WOKE UP WITH BED BUG BITES ALL OVER ME!! I AM SO DISGUSTED RIGHT NOW!!! This place ain't bad for the price. Remember, it is a hostel. So they will nickle and dime you if you let them. But all hostels do this, that is how you can get a bed for 20 bucks a night. Like they give you a locker for your stuff, but you will have to buy a lock for 5 bucks to lock it up. So bring a small lock! Don't lose anything they give you because they will charge you for it. Loose your room key, bracelet (you need to wear this to get in and out of the hotel and to get free breakfast) or towel and they will charge you 10 bucks each. They also will require you give them an ID to hold until you check out so make sure you have an ID besides your passport that you don't mind them holding. Otherwise it's fairly clean. The staff is mostly nice. Free continental breakfast! Nothing fancy of course but you can have some yogurt, oatmeal, fresh fruit, toast, milk, and juice. It is what it is. If you can afford to, of course stay at a nice resort. But if you are trying to stay cheap, this place is pretty good for a really good price.
