There was BEDBUGS when I was there in June. I guess they took action to solve it.

Unfortunately, this place is lacking in cleanliness. I booked before reading reviews and on my flight I had time to read reviews and I nearly booked something else after reading... While I had no issues with bed bugs in my private room, the room was definitely lacking any type of personal touches and cleanliness. It was just a bed shoved in a room, no hooks on the wall or door to hang a towel or your belongings- which is what a few dollars to add? The bed was thankfully comfortable, and it cooled down enough at night to make no AC fine (this was during rainy season though), the pillows could use an upgrade. It seems to me they just need to deep clean the place to get everyone feeling comfortable there. The hostel was fairly dirty and it felt as though it just signaled to the guests that they too could make a mess as well, the kitchen, the fridge were a disaster. My travelling Tupperware and utensils were stolen from the community area and the staff really had no interest in helping me check lost and found or checking with cleaners to see if they were put elsewhere. The bathrooms often didn't have toilet paper or just didn't work at all. The wifi had multiple different access points and lots of them didn't work from the rooms pretty much at all. I see the charm this place offers and I want to come back and give it a better review but just wasn't quite there for me.

My bed was FULL of bed bugs. It was absolutely impossible to sleep. There was so much of them that I was able to see them. I booked for 2 nights, after the first night left this place, they refused to return me money. Apart from this everything looks good: atmosphere, people. it would be better to make this place more clean, but for this price it's fine

I had serious bed bug bites for 6 nights in mens' 8 bed dorm. I had 50 bites, almost size of a US quarter dollar coin.

Very racist staff from before . Asked for a.manager they declined. I am.going to sue this place with my lawyer. Only the new black girl was nice and professional the rest were pigs. Placing people on the black list they have secretly. This is the worse place to stay in costa rica alot of bed bugs

I stayed there for one week and I was bitten by bedbugs all over my body

Your experience will be determined by staff. Half is stellar! Other half is uncomfortably cold. Especially the short young guy, who seems to have a prejudice against the guests, and will dismiss you without looking up. They always tell you “come back in 90 minutes” -when their shift is over Last stay got a dorm with BED BUGS all over the bunk, which was the final straw for me. Wouldn’t be surprised they’re still there. Shame bc owner has created a GREAT environment- but needs all staff to care

the room was dirty, I have never seen this before in other hostel. (Sands on the grounds) The sheets aspect were really suspicious . (Bed bugs..)

++++++ Bed bugs - don't go!!! +++++++ I slept for two nights in October 2024 at Costa Rica Backpackers. I only noticed an animal when I removed the bed linen on my departure and immediately reported it to reception. A member of staff then examined the mattress and found other animals, photographed them and removed the mattress from the room. I had not had any bedbugs before and as the animals do not stay on people, but remain in their hiding places on the bed, on other furniture etc. during the day, it is also impossible that I should have brought several animals with me for just two nights. It is the hostel's responsibility to ensure that no parasites are transmitted to other guests. Removing the mattress is not enough. The entire room must be emptied and cleaned by a professional exterminator. As the luggage boxes are directly under the beds, I am forced to have my luggage professionally cleaned at home immediately by an exterminator to prevent my entire flat from being infested. I asked the hostel to reimburse me for the costs incurred as well as the costs for the two nights. However, the hostel refuses to pay any compensation. Apart from this the beds are not really clean and the mattresses are sagging. Also the bars of some of the lockers are very short so that they can be opened when locked.

From all my travels this has to be the worst experience I’ve had. For starters, the staff where so rude and just done with their work, I did a reservation for 7 and where our in different rooms, which is a first and when doing a reservation as a group i expected to be together. Some of my friends woke up with multiple bites from bedbugs, the beds are made of metal so every time you wanted to just move in bed is sounded like someone just fell from the bed.

Sure, there’s a cool pool, but I got bit by bed bugs EVERYWHERE when I stayed in one of their musty basement rooms. I found one on my backpacking backpack later on as I was at the airport. I’m just hoping that I didn’t bring any back into my home otherwise this $8 hostel is going to cost me hundreds to remove of infestation...

The beds are full of bedbugs, very hard to get a goodnight sleep. Very few staff members are polite and friendly. The food is lausy and expensive. The owner was very rude an insulting to me. Things get's stolen why would you want to come here? I don't recommend it at all. I am very sorry i choose this place and the bed bugs wont let you sleep.

Place is very sketchy looking, but that's doesn't bother me. When we first arrived, they gave us a bedroom that clearly looked liked it hasn't been thoroughly cleaned in years. I sat on the bed for not even 5minutes and began to scratch all over, which is a clear sign of bed bugs.Bathrooms were also dirty and in addition to that, wifi doesn't reach all the rooms. They also offer a free breakfast that includes three pancakes and a few pieces of papaya. The papaya was good while on the other hand, the pancakes were so raw and gooey. They make you pay for a side of eggs,bacon,etc., which I can imagine are just as bad or even worse. Overall, the only positive thing I can say about this place is that the people are kind and it is fairly close to the center, but I would definitely not come here again. *currently scratching *
