Most absurdly terrible hostel I’ve ever stay. Dirty as hell, terrible facilities

This was a very poor place to stay. Volunteer staff were rude and unhelpful and regarded guests as a nuisance. Poor WiFi, poor location. Social area extended from reception so not private. Converted hotel. No power sockets at bed. Dim lighting in bathroom. Awful.

Sehr dreckiges Badezimmer, zahnpastaflecken und Müll von den Vorgängern wurde nicht entfernt. Auch die Küche ist sehr dreckig. Betten sauber, in den Zimmern hat es allerdings nach altem Fisch gerochen.

We spent 2 days in Matala Hostel. We are used to hostels but this one was super dirty! Don’t be fooled by the pictures, they are old and unreliable. In each dorm, there is only one bathroom and shower: thus, the floor is always wet (not shower curtain), the sink was clogged and there was no toilet paper. Regarding the common spaces, the swiming pool was green, the kitchen sink was full and dirty, toilets were broken and clogged. There is suppose to be free coffee but there was none. So guez…

i stayed in a few hostels before, as a solo traveler you decide to get less sleep and privacy for the vibe.I wouldn't go again to this place because i missed the atmosphere. The staff is nice (volunteers). But the rest is quite bad, no activitys, not real social, dirty rooms, the pool smells quite bad. better pay bit more and enjoy matala.

The Matala hostel was a mess. I booked a female only dorm and in the morning I notice that a man was accomodated in the room. The room and the bathroom were pigstys, under the beds were dusty and full of garbage, only cold water was coming from the shower, the floor was flooding because the sewer was blocked. The shower curtain was dirty and mouldy. The common rooms were okay, but also there you could see the lack of cleaning. I would not come again.

Private rooms are nice. Dorms have curtains but no power plug or shelves. Showers are a bit meh and are hand held. Pool is nice. Was easy to do washing. Found the people a bit strange and lots of older crowd.

The pool is nice, unfortunately the romms and the bathrooms were not very clean

vinimos a este hostal para librarnos de un apuro en otro hostal de la isla. Aun no tengo claro si fue peor el remedio que la enfermedad. No estuvo mal, pero tampoco estaba genial. Aunque parece que esta muy bien, le falta organizacion y cuidado, porque potencial tiene. No fue una estancia terrible y prefiero este hostal que nuestra primera opcion, ademas de que esta situado en un pueblo muy agradable y accesible en coche, pero tampoco esta hecho para todo el mundo

A lovely hostel, very well appointed with all commodities and 10 minutes walk from the beach and the main street of Matala. The staff is very friendly, it is very clean and the kitchen has everything you need to cook if you feel so inclined. Highly recommended.

Very nice and cheap hostel. Spacious dorm, comfortable bed, AC, hot shower. There is a swimming pool with a nice common area to relax and meet other people. Staff was lovely, thank you for a great stay!

Best hostel experience in Crete

Amazing location, swimming pool, friendly staff, and very comfortable beds. Everything you need (shops, restaurants, bars) & the beach is within walking distance. Highly recommended!

This hostel is underrated, it truly is like entering another dimension, well located near everything you need. The pool is an added bonus, whilst the day trips and frequent events create magical moments. The atmosphere created by the staff was great and relaxed. Barbecue night was a nice plus to socialize and eat some good fish. It was an amazing stay.

This hostel had a really great vibe and we fell in love with Matala. It seemed like there was more staff living (who were lovely) there than actual guests which was perplexing because the rooms were always dirty and the facilities not kept up with. There was never any hand towel or toilet paper and we had sand and dirt on our floor the whole stay. There was rubbish under the beds and beside my bed there were hairballs and a weird bug. If the cleaning was better this hostel would be magical.

It’s cheap. Not very clean. Wouldn’t stay again tbh.

The hostel was not clean and the atmosphere was a bit off. it was hard to commect with other travelers and the kitchen was dirty and nearly no kitchen equipment was provided. The pool was nice and Matala is pretty.

I had an absolutely amazing stay at Matala Hostel. The atmosphere created by the manager Adam and the staff was welcoming, comfortable and made me feel right at home. The volunteers created a fun social environment even though the season was slowing down. I will definitely come back if I’m ever back in Crete!!

toilet in room was very dirty for the 2 nights i was staying also the sheets. cleaning was not done or day or on a daily basis. manager was rude and ignorant when i spoke to him about it. said nothing just rolling his eyes and seemed affended. all other staff were fantastic especially AGAPE who i actually thought was the manager. he was polite,helpful and fun to be around. hehe was excellent at the desk and entertaining hosting a bbq. this man deserves the manager position.

Easy to get to from the bus, quick walk to the beach. Would come back 10/10 experience here !

super pretty and spacious hostel! my room had a balcony and an ensuite. the pool is gorgeous and the staff is super friendly! very easy to work remotely from here too! the wifi is not amazing but its not any worse from other parts of europe, and had good 5G coverage too even on red beach! would 100% go back!

Pros: staff/volunteers were nice and always happy to help. Very cute kittens, great pool and open area. Cons: bathroom and shower weren’t great and the whole place is just a bit dirty
