Lovely spot right in the jungle, secluded and feels really special. Lots of wildlife, including dogs on site and chickens wandering around, You can walk the nature trails on site and see Mayan Ruins right on the property which is amazing. It’s very quiet, and hard to get around unless you rent a car. If you’re a solo traveler please be careful, we are a couple and felt unsafe walking the nearby streets at night and heard some warnings. Staff are kind and super helpful! Family vibe.
Great location, Jungle fever...threvis a live archeological site within walkin distance from lodge with a spotify tour...the concierge Maggie is terrific,
Pros - beautiful place, especially the trails, ruins & river, Maddy was lovely & welcoming, she gave us a great tour on arrival, food was tasty (but see more on food below), dogs were cute Cons - location means you are a bit stuck which would be fine if there wasn’t so much tension surrounding the food! Such a weird & unfriendly vibe about it, it was so overpriced for the amount you get, they said to help ourselves to one dish and then rudely told one women she ate too much of it, such a sham...
Apart from the comfortable dormitory mattresses, everything else is perfect!
Our stay here was one of our trip highlights! We stayed in the “off grid” cabin which was secluded and peaceful (and actually had a couple of plugs for charging sockets so we could charge our phones). The communal showers were some of the best we’ve had, hot water, great pressure and lovely clean shower block. We only had a couple of the communal meals as it was a bit pricey for us but the guest kitchen was great. Hope to return one day!
This place is really special. Imagine a little community in the middle of the jungle with semi-excavated Mayan ruins! You can see Toucans, hummingbirds, snakes & crocodiles (don't worry, I didn't see any of those two in the actual compound), and go for long walks in the jungle with José (the dog and best jungle guide in lower dover!) Maddy, the owner, is a force of nature & very generous. Her son, Justin & his girlfriend, Maya, are both lovely! San Ignacio is just a short bus/taxi ride away !
Lower Dover is a very special place - we had a magical few days here swimming, stargazing and shooting the breeze with new friends over a hibiscus wine (or 4 hah). It’s very much an eco reserve (no AC) but made a nice change from the normal. Maddie is great, as is her audio tour! Food is probably a little expensive for what it is but we didn’t mind too much. Highly recommend for those who want to switch off and be in nature. Having said that the wifi was superb!
Great Hostel! Owners super friendly and cool location next to the river. When I stayed it was quiet and not the vibe I was after, however would be perfect for a chilled nature retreat!
Mein absolutes Lieblingshostel!!
My absolute favorite hostel!! great location in the middle of the Regenwald with its own Mayaruinen and yet very central to San Ignacio (Xunantunich, Iguana Sanctuary). free WLAN, hot water, filtered drinking water and air conditioning. really delicious Essen. the hosts are super nett! the Atlanta Express Bus lets you in Unitedville at the Hardware Store directly at the Lower Dover Sign raus. from there it is only five minutes walk. i have always felt very safe here, also in the Chicken Bus.
This hostel really has a gun factor and is so quietly located. it is because it is a little further away from the shops which is not always convenient. unfortunately i got sick during my stay there and maddy took such good care of me! really super nice people who want to think with you.

You can take a tour of the Mayan ruins, swim in the river or play billiards. the owners also explain a lot or help with the organization of the trip. and the dinner is incredibly delicious.
Stayed 3 nights at Lower Dover and had a great time. Room was spacious, clean and well taken care of. Loved the outdoor rain shower. Ate all my dinners and breakfasts there, food was awesome. Property is beautiful, friendly dogs and cool trains and ruins to see. Enjoyed swimming in the creek and river. Owners are lovely and genuinely care about your experience, also knowledgeable about Belize and the surrounding area and gave me some great travel tips. Can't wait to return!
Best hostel experience I have ever had. Maddie and Justin were such welcoming hosts. The rooms were comfortable and cool, the facilities were clean, and there was so much to do at Lower Dover. Stayed 5 nights and were come back for more without a doubt. Cannot recommend enough.
I absolutely loved my stay here. It felt like an adventure in the middle of the jungle with a lovely vibe and atmosphere of the hostel. The staff was very kind and helpful and went out of their way to make this stay awesome. It was also perfectly located to do the ATM caves, since we were the first Tour there and had the caves for ourselves.
I love Jose, Chica, Socrates, Luna (puppy dogs), chickens, ducks, peacocks, River, ruins audio tour, trees, FOOD, vibe, Mady helping us book tours and Justin hanging out; . Cool people stay at cool hostels so we met a lot of characters.
Cannot recommend Lower Dover enough! This was my first stop on my trip to Belize and I fear this hostel may have set the bar too high. Maddy and Justin are such kind and welcoming hosts and all of their staff are just as warm and friendly. You can spend multiple days just exploring the grounds and swimming in the river and creek. The rooms were lovely and so comfortable, the showers were HOT, and the home cooked meals were delicious. What more could you want?!
10/10 would stay again. This is the perfect place if you’re looking for somewhere away from big cities, actually in the Belizean jungle, with real Mayan ruins onsite! Lovely food served family style and great ATM tour which Maddie helped us organise. Very local and lovely vibe here. Do not book here if you want lots of people and party atmosphere. It felt like our most adventurous stop so far. Maddie, the host, is also top notch. Super helpful and interesting. Helped us organise travel...
Wirklich toll! Vielen Dank für ...
This accommodation was the most beautiful surprise for us on our trip. Maddi & Justin really took us in with a lot of heart and great tips. You realize that there is a lot of love in everything that was created there! It is an incredibly great terrain right in the jungle with great little huts that are super equipped. If you want to go for a walk, you can take the Maddis Audio Tour and listen to the story of the Mayan Ruins. Really great! Thank you so much for everything!
the reviews don’t lie - this is an exceptional place! It’s a great location for the ATM caves yes but it’s worth spending more time here to explore and enjoy the premises and peace. Everything‘s very well thought through and there’s love in the details. You can explore Mayan ruins on a audio-guided tour, swim in the river and cuddle all the fur babies. The food is great and the people treat you like family and go out of their way to make sure you have a great time. Can’t recommend it...
10/10, cannot recommend this place more. The owners were amazing and friendly. The breakfast and suppers were great. We will be back for sure! Especially to see Jose 😊
Incredible showers. Best showers all trip. Super hot, super strong water pressure. I still think about that shower. Spacious too with shelves and hooks. Unreal. Come here just for the shower alone. Has a pool table and plenty of space to lounge in. Also acres of backyard attached to the property which includes a trail to the ruins and forest and a river. A freaking river in the property. Could lounge here all week. 10/10

Great place, has some cool trails on site including Mayan ruins. Friendly atmosphere and good facilities such as hot rainwater showers and comfortable beds with mosquito nets. Maddy the host was very helpful with organising tours and answering questions about crossing the border to Guatemala.
Lower Dover is a great place to chill out & enjoy a few days - it has on site ruins, trails you can explore, a lovely area to swim in, and Maggie the host is an absolute legend. It’s really relaxed and not near any towns but also has a nearby shop if you need any supplies. Definitely recommend this place.
Love Maddie the host so much - you can tell the owners really care about the property and the user experience. They’re definitely in it for the environmental aspects and for educating the youth on cool plants and geology facts. Will probably have to make a trip back to the area to show my partner as well. also the dogs are so lovely
We had an amazing time at Lower Dover. Maddie was the perfect host, she helped us with the activities and we really enjoyed her company. Would definitely stay here!
