The volentere was horrendous. She was running around screaming and hallucinating every night. Had to switch rooms. I contacted the hostel 3 days in advance to cancel a night. When I arrived they said I it wouldn’t be a problem, but since their computer system didn’t understand a cancellation when they tried to put it in they still made me pay for the night wven though I shouldn’t have to within their policy. Toilets and showers didn’t work. Worst hostel stay ever!READ GOOGLE REVIEWS INST...
We were there for two and had booked and paid for two nights. After the first sleepless night, we left the hostel. The service is good but the rest is a disaster. Our 4-Bett Room was in the basement. Despite the air conditioning at 16 degrees, the Bude was hot as a sauna. In the bathroom there were countless bugs and it smelled unpleasant. In addition, the bathroom is shared with another 4-Bett Room. The hostel is located on a hill at the end of a Sackgasse, about 10 minutes walk to the beach.
I stayed in a 4 bed female dorm, which was located directly off a communal area and there wasn't a way to lock the door so it didn't feel very secure. (I woke up to a male coming into our dorm in the night to use our bathroom). It was also super small. The shower was also really poor (terrible water pressure) so it took a very long time to wash my hair! Other than this, the staff were lovely, the shared kitchen was good, with a water filter. The communal areas were OK, has a pool table.
I faced racism and Islamophobia in this hostel.
The hostel is dirty and our bathroom was full of mold. The only good thing was the air conditioning in the room and the location. Unfortunately, we didn't feel comfortable there at all and were glad when we left.
Katastrophe.
We had a rat in our room and had to share the bathroom with a lot of people. the rooms were not swept or wiped during the day and neither was the bathroom. the water from the pipe smelled. overall unfortunately it was not very comfortable.
I had expected more from my stay at Happy Hammocks. my bed was cracking and beeps enormously, as my upper-class neighbor turned around I noticed it already. besides the shower was not always super clean. besides I had expected the hostel to be more social.
Place had potential but just didn't really get the vibes of what the reviews portrayed. Rooms were quite cramped, bathroom ceiling covered in mould. Owner was away when we stayed and the girl on reception had only been working there a week. This had a pretty big impact on our stay as although she was lovely she definitely didn't have the skillset to create great amazing vibes. At least not all by herself. Quite let down, especially given it was more expensive than other hostels.
I stayed 5 nights and overall it was a nice stay. I enjoyed the people and the volunteers were really nice Emi, Mihir, and July :) Also the vibe was social, chill, and fun. Nevertheless, I must say I was not a big fan of the hostel itself. The rooms are very small, the bunk beds weirdly positioned, the lockers really small and the worst part for my room: our room had no own bathroom, which means sharing it with over 20 people = long waiting times.
Liked this place! Cool activities and nice people. Pool table is a plus. Beds were not the best but also not the worst

Favorit Unterkunft in Sri Lanka , gute Lage, super nette Leute, sehr sauber , Hostel bietet immer sehr coole Aktionen an :)
10/10, had any amazing stay. Great vibes and most lovely staff. Very welcoming and great at getting people to connect. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a clean and fun hostel to stay at.
Nice rooms and a cozy place to relax and interact (the chill zone is a must)
Was an awesome stay, no better place to hang around!
location up hill but can walk to everything, staff friendly and helpful for advice, rooms a bit cramped and no windows but dark and good sleep and beds have curtains, someone had food in my room which attracted ants but the hostel do have signs everywhere asking people to store food in the kitchen
Absolutely loved it here, without a doubt the best hostel I’ve stayed at in Sri Lanka. The staff are extremely friendly and make you feel so welcome, rooms have comfortable beds and the organised events make you meet so many different cool people. Would highly recommend to anyone. Shoutout to Azza, Emi and Dennis for making our experience that much better :)
Honestly one of the best if not the best Hostal I’ve ever stayed. Was treated like a member of the family by all the staff and the volunteers were amazing. The place is clean, has loads going on but also so easy to chill. Special shout out to my boy Azza who is the manager and is the highlight of the Hostal!
We had the best time staying here, originally only booked for 2 nights but extended for 4 and wanted 2 more nights but they were fully booked so helped us book with the hostel next door and let us join in on everything still! The most welcoming team, and such a lovely friendly environment. The rooms were all so clean and comfy beds. Absolutely adored this hostel, and will definitely be back!
Super leuk hostel! Doen veel sociale activiteiten en leuk sfeertje😁
Super nice hostel! do a lot of social activities and a nice atmosphere😁
This is one of the best hostels i have ever stayed at! happy hammocks are the best hostels in SL!!
Absolutely loved my stay at happy hammocks. The vibe here for meeting other travellers is so social and friendly but not crazy party. It’s just a 10 minute walk to the main beach and the staff will help organise surfing/bike rental/buses as well as organising some really fun social events. Would highly recommend!
Lovely hostel. Staff are amazing, cheap prices (ice bath free and tuk tuk to and from doctors house free!). Place was clean and also so social, always hangouts planned in WhatsApp chat. Azza also helped so much planning my safari and transport onto to Ella. Thank you!!
The best hostel I’ve stayed in Sri Lanka, the beds and facilities are decent, the people there are amazing,a big shoutout to the owner and the volunteers for hosting social events and creating memories.
Super well located hostel. Good value for money. The staff there made it a 10/10 experience, wholesome social events :)
This hostel is by far one of the best hostels I’ve stayed at over the years, if not the best. We came to Hirikatiya with the aim to stay for a couple days, that ended up in nearly two weeks. It’s so easy to socialise. Volunteers, owners and guests are so welcoming. It’s not a party hostel as such ie it’s quiet if you want to sleep. But there is always activities in the evening and parties to go to with the hostel. Azza, emi,Dennis and crag were unreal. We will miss you❤️
Amazing place! It is super easy to connect with people. They have a lot of daily events and family dinners. Best hostel in sri lanka for me. Loved hanging out with the volunteer emi. She kept the vibe really social. The rooms are great and have comfortable beds. I stayed here for weeks
Heard so much about Happy Hammocks but this didn’t end up being my vibe. I truly think it was the people when I was there, not the place. Other places are social and do have free breakfast for the same cost or cheaper, I ended up moving. Rooms are fine and staff is great!
This is such a lovely hostel and it’s was my friends birthday so they organised a whole cake for us which was so so so lovely!! The hostel is spacious clean and kept cool with great AC. The staff are all lovely and the location is great too, I would for sure recommend this hostel to anyone ☺️
Only stayed here one night as a stop over but it was a good little hostel in a good location close to the beach and the centre but tucked away so it’s nice and quiet! Bed was comfy and they had everything I needed!
