Hootananny Hostel

Bathrooms were dirty, beds had stains on them, in a really sketchy neighborhood, staff were nice though, bar downstairs was loud at night for those who don’t stay out late. Reception was hard to get ahold of too

Un buen lugar, pero muy lejos del centro de Londres. Por otro lado, el lugar estaba limpio pero se notaba sobre todo en baños; poco cuidado y mantenimiento.

Stayed one night - following afternoon I have 5 big bites on my arms and 1 on my leg. Thoroughly check bed & sheets if staying. It's a decent hostel otherwise

They overbooked the evening, put me on a couch in the common room then when the night manager took over she kicked me out at 3:30am after I’d already paid

Womens toilets/showers but several men use them so if youre changing or naked beware! Leave toilet seats up and pee on floor. Area may suit ppl who like being in the 3rd world, followed &approached by creepy men.feel afraid to be robbed too &see druggies dancing everywhere. its next to good transport, great huge sainsburys, not far from rental bikes,shops &24hr off license. Staff great but unavailable til 5pm inc phone.chill vibes inc long term men, respectful.clean bed,kitchen but grubby,COLD

I booked on hostelworld apps at a price of $23 and hostelworld charged me some dollars when booking in advance. But when I arrived the staff charged me with pound and collected 25 pound which is more than agreed price. Don’t know why but feel really bad.

Staff were lovely and the beds were clean and really appreciated the free breakfast and towel. However, as a young female traveller, even in a female only dorm I didn’t feel very safe. Most people there were 35 plus and men. The lockers are also outside and not secureNot many places to sit, the only places are in the kitchen (which isn’t very clean) or in the communal room, which always has the tv on with older people I didn’t feel very comfortable with, and I consider myself reasonably so...

Gros bémol pour la propreté que ce soit de la part du personnel de l'établissement qui ne semble pas à cheval sur l'hygiène, mais également des voyageurs qui utilisent les lieux communs et les ustensiles de cuisine sans penser aux autres. Il y a néanmoins de nombreuses portes à codes et des clés pour la sécurité des affaires. Les chambres sont correctes mais là encore un peu spartiates. Peut convenir pour un court séjour à Londres mais douches et toilettes peu adaptés pour plus lo...

Las habitaciones sucias, los colchones con manchas, los baños bastante precarios también. Hay gente muy rara que seguro vive allí Lo único positivo fue la chica que me atendió que fue muy simpática.

Very lovely, will save this place for my future london travels

Quirky and peculiar place! Went to a concert downstairs, so that was great. Room was clean, bathrooms okay. Vibe was a bit off I think, not so much greeting though and the ommon room just a circle of couches so no way of having a little nook to yourself. Staff was very friendly and showed me around. Maybe in summer there’s a bit more interaction going on. Overall good for a night or two :)

Nice and cheap place to stay for a few nights, could be a bit cleaner but apart from that, decent value for money if you’re looking for somewhere cheap to stay

Pretty good for a hostel, slightly above average. We had a pleasant stay but lacks the cool vibes of other places

Really great location especially if you are attending concerts @ O2 Brixton academy and Brixton market etc. Staff were friendly and welcoming. I can not comment on the atmosphere and social aspect as I only came for one night and to sleep. I felt safe as there were lots of secure doors with codes. Bed was comfortable. There was little soap for the bathrooms was possibly my only con, but for the value I think the hostel is great.

Great venue, stayed for a music event downstairs. Staff very helpful, especially Veronica who made me feel welcome and showed me around. Female lone traveller, felt safe, my belongings were secure and nice atmosphere.

There are no sinks to wash your hands in the bathrooms (at least on the main floor), only the one in the kitchen, so touching any door or surface in the hostel with that knowledge is a bit grim. Other than that, hostel is fine. If you’re planning to go to a concert at the Brixton Academy or to hang out in Brixton, it’s very convenient.

Honestly the best staff experience so far, taken on a proper tour of the place, plenty of solid security measures to feel safe. Sure its above a bar and that for some people isn't a preference but I think you should be researching the place before paying which anyone whinging about the noise clearly didn't! Facilities all worked and they offered free breakfast! The atmosphere was like staying at a family friends place, its not your home but it felt damn near close!

Stayed in July 2025. Didn’t realize they were not air conditioned and the windows had no screens. Also didn’t realize they have bands playing until late into the night. They do provide ear plugs though. Entry and exit after check in is through an alley which is locked but not well lit, and was off putting at first. Thankful I had a friend with me. They were very helpful with getting luggage up and down the stairs with others staying there.

The staff were kind of aloof and not very friendly. The hostel was cleanish but the layout of it was so weird, it was like the Winchester Mystery house lol. I wouldn’t stay there again.

Im Hootananny haben eine Freundin und ich uns sehr wohl und willkommen gefühlt. Alle waren sehr nett und haben einem immer bei Fragen geholfen.

The beds are actually fairly comfortable but that is about everything I liked about this hostel. There are no real lockers (just tiny ones that seem very insecure), the showers offer no privacy, the toilets are a bit dirty sometimes and there is no sink, so men tactically have to go into the female shower room to wash their hands?? And there's a lot of really old people, I think one was probably almost 4 times my age (so almost 80). It was OK for a couple of nights tho.

Not a terrible place. Staff was super friendly and helpful. My only issue was being above the bar, which would often be pretty loud until the early hours of the morning. I participated a couple of nights, but wasn’t happy on the nights I didn’t.

The Staff is really nice and helpful. Everything is well organised. Recommend 😊

Would not recommend this hostel if you are backpacking/travelling and under the age of 40. Everyone seems to be a lot older, some sketchy people getting around, men’s bathrooms are gross. Didn’t feel safe in Brixton either.
