Would not reccomend staying at this hostel. There is hardly any staff present. Dorms cannot be locked. Very small, packed dorms with very impractical design. Lot of longterm stayers. Extreem cold. No heating in the rooms, kitchen, bathrooms etc. Just in the livingroom. Only 2 bathrooms for the whole hostel. Very old and rundown. Unhelpfull staff, she let me wait 30 min to make a bed first in a random room and then helped me with my question. Shortened my stay here because I was not happy here.
Dorm - Crowded, no room for luggage. Only 4 lockable lockers in a 7 bed room. Bed sheets were marked and not clean. Bathrooms - Dated which wouldn’t be an issue however no hot water and water pressure was questionable. You’ll be better of showering with a bottle of water. Atmosphere - Biggest disappointment, reviews were promising but not my experience. Sat in the lounge, I was starred at by other travellers, when I questioned this they told me to move as they wanted to put a tv there...
The vibe was great. However, it should be mentioned (so I'm mentioning it) that there are 2 indoor cats. I smelled them before I saw them and at least one of them has a problem of pooping wherever the urge strikes. It was an unpleasant surprise to be eating breakfast and see a pile of cat poop on the floor. Apparently it's a known problem and one of the staff is assigned clean up duties.
it was nice hostel to stay few nights while hiking blue mountains. I didn't always know who is the staff member and who is customer. In the room was quite humid air and there was only 3 bathrooms in whole hostel, so in the morning you had wait your turn quite long. There was nice free common dinners everynight and free breakfasts.
Sehr familiär und gemütlich
Flying Fox has only 3 toilets for about 34 guests, including people camping in the back of the property. There is a cat that sometimes pees on the carpet, especially in the 8 bed dorm which is damp and not fresh. There are a few strange male long term guests staying here. One likes to shower for 30 minutes at 'peak rush hour' in the morning, when people are desperate to use a toilet. Be prepared to queue for a bathroom. Unusual atmosphere. Just a 'heads up' to anyone coming here.
Great location. Lots of long term guests which made it quite difficult to socialise. Free breakfast was great. Clean enough. Check in was a bit confusing. Had to call a number and then got texted my room number, had to just go find it with no directions.
Great, simple, cabin-style hostel in the Blue Mountains! Staff & owner were great. The guests and staff seemed personally invested in the hostel so it was clean and well taken care of. Social, but still peaceful. Only 2 showers & 3 toilets total so there will likely be a line.

Bestes Hostel in Australien! :)
Absolutely amazing hostel, filled with the best kinds of people! My experience at the flying fox was nothing short of brilliant, from the firepit every night, to the free breakfast and the pasta night we had. Ross himself is great and you can tell he puts a lot of effort into making the hostel feel like a community. Wish I could have stayed longer!!
Great way to make new friends, very social hostel and there is lots of great information about hikes and good locations in the area!
Really good hostel! Very cosy, we instantly felt at home. The location is very close to central station, a good place to start with hikes or take a train and hike. The staff was also very friendly, and we had great help with luggage storage before and after checkin. Only downside are the facilities, where there are not many bathrooms and the kitchen is quite small, which can be very cosy but also diffucult to work with if you need a little bit more space or time to prepare a meal.
Great Place

Amazing property ! Really nice social feel and amazing view. Ross also kindly made dinner for us one night
Absolutely loved it. Amazing vibe and overall one of my fav places
This hostel is amazing, the has a bit of a hippie vibe but that is exactly the people they want to attract. Sitting together in the main room around the fireplace and musical instruments, playing music, telling stories, having a laugh and planning the next hike so no phones! Outside there was another fireplace where we relaxed after a hike, having a drink and a laugh. You don’t book this hostel for a luxurious experience but for a real one with a nice staff and a nice owner!
grateful for the upgrade
A proper backpacking place

We really enjoyed our stay at the flying fox it was a friendly atmosphere and everyone was very kind. Ross is a great host who gave us recommendations for walking and how to get there. It’s a very homey atmosphere. We didn’t have a car but found we were able to public transport everywhere we wanted as long as we kept an eye on the bus times and planned accordingly.
Amazing place! Super cozy & veeeery social! Most of the people there stay for a longer time because they work in the town so it’s like a family. But it’s not cliquey at all, everyone is super social and includes new people. I loved my stay at the hostel :) And also Ross is a great owner!
The perfect place to stay to enjoy the blue mountains. Everyone staying there is really friendly and the owner was super helpful with remote check in and recommending walks. Very well located for the local town and public transport. The free breakfast with fresh bread each morning was a lovely bonus! My one complaint would be that there are only two bathrooms (one toilet and shower in each) for everyone staying there which meant you often had to queue to use them.
Great stay, Ross is fantastic & so knowledgeable on the hiking routes! Very sociable, lovely outdoor fire pit 😊
Fantastic place to stay in Katoomba. Great location, walking distance to a major attractions. And a great vibe at the hostel with friendly staff and clean cosy environment (and a lovely cat!)
A place that makes you feel like home, good vibes, had a great time. Only bad thing is that I didnt stay longer.
Sehr familiär und gemütlich
echt super!
