Open Gate Hostel Hawaii

Worst hostel experience. Lots of bugs and mosquitoes. Bit multiple times while sleeping and ended up sleeping most of the night in the car. Hostel had no vibes at all... Barely saw anyone else staying there. The hostel is entirely open aired, other than the rooms. Couldn't eat dinner without being bombarded by mosquitoes. Stay somewhere else.

Check the fees the hostal charges you! They charged me too much (intentially or unknowing?) and refunded only after long discussion involving the platform support. Totally unprofessional management, stay away! Besides that, hostal is totally overrated: Rooms are common, kitchen is dirty, common area ok but everything is build very temporary (maybe understandable as located in top of 2018 lava). Strange guests and no atmosphere.

Great place to stay for my birthday! Seems like they have a lot of people staying longer term and doing work exchange. If you’re looking for a down to earth local vibe this is the place to be!

Friendly staff. Cool remote location but far from anything (food, shops, activities). Atmosphere is ok, but it is filled with mosquitoes and there is no enclosed space to enjoy other than your room. So it’s hard to relax and enjoy the space. Not noise proof, loud people watching TV in public area until late. I got a private room with en-suite bath but there is no hot water so need to use shared bath. Also no AC and they turn off power from 12-6.

Very cute and original hostel for staying disconnected. Special +1 for the starry sky that I could see during the nights !

Very good hostel with a good vibe, be aware of the location. The remote location can be a blessing or a burden. Rental car highly recommended

Overall, a really cool stay. Just saw a couple cockroaches in the outside community areas, but the hostel is open-air and our rooms were still clean and cozy. Everyone we encountered was awesome to talk to and the hostel had perfect areas for quiet alone time or community time. If I go back to this area, I'll be staying here again!

Das Hostel ist super schön aufgebaut mit vielen Ecken zum chillen und sehr offen und künstlerisch gestaltet. Besonders schön war der Stargazing-Tower zum Sterne beobachten :) Wir wurden sehr herzlich auf deutsch empfangen und haben täglich mit der Besitzerin gequatscht und dadurch sehr viel über die Gegend erfahren, was super war! Unser 2er-Zimmer war sehr groß und hatte ein eigenes Bad. Das einzige was uns komplett gefehlt hat war ein Spiegel :D In der direkten Umgebung ist nicht wirkli...

Excellent hostel for sure a little remote but this is why we love it. Perfectly located to explore this part of Big Island. More importantly the staff is awesome and will give you plenty of tips about what to do and visit. highly recommended!

Really peaceful Hostel, beautiful view and host super nice 👌🏻

This is an amazing place for people who look to get off the beaten path (and travel with a car), off grid (but with WiFi), on the dry lava field, a hostel that was built for the purpose of being welcoming. Very recommended, both as a traveling hub to explore the east side of big island, and for just chilling and relaxing.

Open Gate Hostel at Kalapana Gardens is the perfect getaway spot. Built directly on the Lava flow in Kalapana, HI. it is completely off-grid with solar power and propane stove and hot water. Having a bathroom attached to the bunk room is a bonus. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The made me feel like Ohana. Introduced me to Uncle Robert's Night Market and Kehena Black Sand Beach.

Open Gate Hostel is a quite special place. I felt welcome from day one as the owners, management and family are so nice and welcoming. The hostel is located on a 50 year old lava field which is a very special experience. That being said, it is otherwise quite secluded. So either come with a car or be prepared. I felt very secure, maybe because there were also not many guests, leaving all my valuables unsupervised. The hostel was also very clean. The facilities are alright too. A happy place!

Words can only scratch the surface when describing the beauty and elegance of this hostel. We accidentally came upon this place in passing and its unique collision of architecture and artistry stood out to us. Although remote, the establishment is surprisingly accessible being just a couple left turns from town. We were struck by the owners’ hospitality and our stay left us feeling fully restored. Our new favorite place to crash on a weekend in puna.

Sprachlos vom ersten Moment an! Dieses Hostel ist das besonderste was ich jemals betreten habe. Die Umgebung, die liebevolle Einrichtung und die besonderen Menschen machen dieses Hostel aus! Perfektes Hostel, mal was anderes! Man trifft lauter verschiedene coole Leute und das Personal ist super! 120%ige Empfehlung! Haben eine BBQ Abend gemacht und so alle anderen kennengelernt. Top!

Beautiful hostel with great friendly people that made it feel like home! Close to kehena (black sand beach) and best acai bowls ever. Рекомендую это место для всех кто хотят по веселиться и отдохнуть :)
