Hostel First Mirissa

All the photos for this hostel were really nice BUT it didn’t match the vibe at all as soon as you see it with your own eyes. Dorms with mosquito net, no curtains, fan too loud, moldy smell which is really bad, common toilets for everyone - not clean. The dorm door no lock - We didn’t feel safe at all. We paid everything for 1 night stay then move out within 3 hours. The staff and owner were really nice though. Would not recommend here. Not sure why the reviews here were high.

-the doors and windows did not close, neither in the room, nor in the bathroom (literally a toilet door had fallen) - there were many cockroaches in the bathroom - there were no electrical outlets in the room - stifling heat and no central ventilation - the net for mosquitos was broken

The worst experience I‘ve ever had while backpacking. We booked three days before only to find out that it was overbooked and our rooms were not available when we arrived. They told us that they had known since yesterday, but no one thought to inform us before our arrival. Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse and I asked for my deposit back, the manager seriously told me I should send him an email. It’s not like I hadn’t already wasted half the day trying to find a new hostel.

Het hostel was vies, de wc deuren waren kapot en in de kamer waarin wij sliepen was de airconditioning kapot en stonk het enorm. De bedden waren niet schoon en er waren geen oplaadpunten in de kamer. Met de bedden hebben ze niet zo goed georganiseerd en kreeg ik iemand anders bed aangewezen. Kortom niet het beste hostel om te verblijven en niet zoals er vermeld staat.

Very unclean facilities and rooms. Our AC did not work, the toilet pipes were broken, and the door to our room could not lock. Luckily one of the staff helped us find another place since the room was not acceptable.

We didn't get the vibe as in the pictures when we arrived. We booked a private room and we could choose between a room with AC and a room without. Both rooms were smelly, there was mold on the mattress as well as on the walls and in the shower. Also, it looked liked there were insects and insect feces in one of the rooms. The host was very willing to clean it right away, but nevertheless we decided to stay elsewhere. Maybe due to the offseason, but we didn't like the hostel as we hoped we would.

Toen we aan kwamen bij het hostel, sprak die medewerker geen engels. Hierdoor heel veel gedoe gehad met inchecken. De jongen snapten ons en hij ons niet. Hij zat ook te vaak met zijn ogen te rollen en werd met die seconden onvriendelijker. Ook nadat de baas werd gebeld en hij het in sri Lankaans had uitgelegd snapte de medewerker er nog steeds niks. Daarnaast staat er dat ontbijt bij inbegrepen zit, maar dat is helemaal niet waar. De kamer is heel vochtig en de badkamer is erg verjaard

Staff just showed me my room didn’t want to engage in conversation at all. I was hoping it would have. Nice friendly atmosphere but sadly no one was around. I never spoke with anyone while there for 3 nights I couldn’t wait to leave.

The dogs are really cute and very kind owners. Unfortunately it was hard to meet other travellers at this hostel and there were not activities. The showers and toilets were really dirty with a lot of spiders and mold. Also the volunteer there tried to scam us with going snorkeling with turtles and renting snorkeling glasses at much higher price from the hostel then the price at the turtle beach, which felt a bit weird for us.

The stay was okay overall, but there were a few things that could be improved. We saw some cockroaches in the room, which wasn’t very pleasant. Also, there was no air conditioning, only a ceiling fan, which made the nights quite hot. The Wi-Fi worked only from time to time and wasn’t very reliable. Apart from that, the location was good and the staff were friendly, but the facilities definitely have room for improvement.

No vibe, no atmosphere in this place. Very uninviting courtyard and common areas. Private room was clean for SL standards and ok.

Very good location but apart from that 0 atmosphere. 0 social vibe. The private room basically consisted of 2 beds and a mosqito net with holes. The bathroom was filthy with a broken door that u couldnt close and a sink that was constantly leaking on the floor. In the night it was very loud with sounds coming from a temple that was probably next door. The hostel is very very basic. It is not a social hostel and it’s very dark inside. The staff is nice. I booked a private room. The bathroom was filthy and ants took over the place. Also the facilities in the bathroom very not very good. So I won’t recommend this hostel to be real honest.

Not so social hostel ! But owners very good ! Ready to help all the times !

I was very pleased. The people are very friendly. Everything was available. I stayed in a four-person female dorm. If I ever come back to Mirissa, I will definitely stay there again.

Manju and the staff were lovely. massages next door and all you can eat sri lankan buffet at the hostel which was delicious.Very close to beach and delicious restaurant close by. Room was good for price. loved all the rescue dogs at the hostel

Manju e la moglie sono viaggiatori esperti che ti fanno sentire a casa. Tengono tantissimo al loro ostello e progetto. Ogni sera organizzavano un’attività musicale per gli ospiti e non solo.

Een super hostel! Het personeel is super lief en denkt geweldig mee. In de avond kan je deelnemen aan een onbeperkt eet buffet wat door hun voor je ogen vers bereid word. En nog mega lekker ook voor niet eens veel geld! De kamers voldoen aan al je eisen. Als ik ooit terug kom. Ga ik hier zeker weer langs ! Aanrader !!

Absolutely loved my stay at Hostel First! The home-cooked buffet was delicious, fresh, and very affordable. The rooms were clean, cozy, and beautifully designed. The location is perfect — just a short walk from the beach. But the best part were the hosts: so kind, welcoming, and always ready to help. They truly make you feel at home. I can’t recommend this place enough — perfect for relaxing, enjoying great food, and meeting wonderful people!

Staff very friendly, out of season so there wasn't really any atmosphere. Location is on the edge of the beach. The bathroom was run down, some mould on the walls.

they made us move rooms after 1 day because he overbooked. There was an animal in the roof and hole in ceiling, which was scratching and running around at all hours. We told the owners. The woman laughed and showed us a pic of what it was online (a civet) and did nothing. The owner came to our room late at night and asked us (2 girls) if we had brought a man back and made us open the door to prove. We couldn’t wait to leave. Do not recommend the private rooms

Such a cute little hostel !! You feel welcomed right away and the host Manju Sri is one of the most warm and helpful persons I’ve met during my time in Sri Lanka. He and his family try to include and talk to everyone and even though I stayed only one night, he helped me over Whats app about my ongoing trip:)) The kitchen outside and the all you can eat menu is also AMAZING and especially cheap … also there are lots of opportunities and activities to do where you get also lots of help …

It’s a lovely place, right on the way to mirissa beach! The dorms are spacious and there are mosquito nets as well. Everyone was so helpful and warmhearted. You feel very welcomed there immediately! Also the rice&curry buffet in the evening was amazing! Can definitely recommend a stay there.

Amazing experience at Hostel First Mirissa! The place is clean, cozy, and perfect for backpackers. The host was so friendly and always ready to help with anything. Felt like home from the moment I arrived. Definitely one of the best hostels I’ve stayed at in Sri Lanka!
