La Villa de Maria

This hostel has been CLOSED! We arrived and they have signs all over the front doors declaring they have been closed by the local government. We knocked on the door and they explained they had not paid their taxes or licence or something.Since we arrived at 10pm they kindly put us up in an apartment they had across the road and we still paid.

The property is fine, nothing special but a cheap option with a kitchen and common spaces. For me what made this property awful is the fact that they lock the doors from the inside at night and give you no way of leaving. So if a fire breaks out you are trapped inside to burn. Or if you have a medical emergency, you are trapped inside and cannot go to the hospital. In my case being locked in almost made me miss my Uber and thus my flight which would have been very expensive. Seems dangerous.

Das Zimmer war sehr klein und hatte kein Fenster. Die Küche war nicht immer sauber Wenn man auf die Galapagos Inseln fliegt hat es eine gute Lage zum Airport und Busterminal. Man könnte gleich in der Beschreibung die Kosten für die Gepäckaufbewahrung von 1 Dollar pro Nacht und Gepäckstück schreiben. Das macht es transparenter und ist ehrlicher.

Hostel is more akin to a homestay as its conjoined with the owners house. The owner and staff were really friendly. Location wise, it is as says on the tin. Close the the airport/bus stations (5/10 min taxi) but a 45 minute bus journey out of the city. As such there was little atmosphere. Although inside the property we felt safe and looked after, outside it felt very dodgy and not somewhere we were happy to walk around at night. Very small & basic family run hostel. When I say small I mean there is barely space to move in the hostel, it’s tiny. I had a private room - it had no windows (which meant it was completely dark in there even during the day) and a very loud air-con which seemed to not blow out cold air. I felt a little suffocated in the room. Shower was lukewarm. Super quiet hostel, zero atmosphere. Only stay here for 1 night if you need to get to the airport quickly. The family are very nice and wifi is good.

Great hostel if you’re looking for a quiet day before or after the Galapagos. It’s in a safe area and the private rooms are incredibly cheap. They will even provide breakfast and coffee on a morning if you want it. If you’re looking for something more social, I would avoid this hostel. Not only were there very few opportunities to meet anyone, you have to ring the bell every time you want to enter the property which is inconvenient.

Good location for airport and bus terminal. 20 minutes walk. There is a place near by that can change currency into local currency. GBP£ CAN$ and EUR€ the airport is pathetic. Do NOT GO THERE. The bank is called Del Bank and it's on the main street just inside Plaza Mayor. The beds are comfy. Kitchen is adequate. Fre drinking water. Cable TV in rooms. The front door for entry is the left one the right one is the private room. Friendly hosts and knowledgeable. Plenty of places to eat ...

We had a one night stay just for an early flight. Arrived in the evening and left early morning. Staff were friendly. Entrance was a little hard to recognise, looks like a normal house. Inside was nicely decorated, room was basic but did the job. They organised a transfer to the airport in the morning. No key to our private room door but there was a lock from the inside.

This was a great stay near the airport! Super comfortable and homey. Can’t say much about the area since I was only at the hostel. Was very helpful that a taxi could be arranged for me at 5am even though there was a curfew.

The family was really friendly, I could check-in a lot earlier than I thought what was pretty nice.

Maria is een hele fijn en vriendelijke host, ze hielp ons met het regelen van een taxi naar het vliegveld vroeg in de ochtend en was erg prettig om mee te communiceren. Ik kan dit verblijf van harte aanraden.

I enjoyed my stay here very much, Maria is a very lovely lady who took great care of me and despite my lack of Spanish we were able to share many laughs and conversations. Although she has multiple daughters who also speak fluent English. Maria and her mom have made me some lovely meals and Maria has helped me with all kinds of advice for buses, sightseeing, etc. Because the hostal is quite small, it provides a really cozy atmosphere and allows more deep connections with other travellers.

Overall good place for a night or two, This part of Guayaquil isn’t exactly touristy, but it is relatively close to both the airport and the bus station. Good beds, fiar shower and overall comfortable. The fans were adequate

Maria is one of the best hosts i had so far! She and her family are lovely and make sure we feel like home! The room is clean and the kitchen has everything u need for your meals, recomend this stay for sure ❤️

Maria is an amazing host. We stayed here before and after going to the Galapagos and she looked after our bags for us while we went. She is thorough and provides great information of the area and what to do. She’s always available for any questions and makes the stay very enjoyable. Definitely recommend staying here while in Guayagil!

This is the first review....I have left after 8 months of traveling...I feel fortunate to be here...I am a old slow traveler....so great ..so embraced by Maria and family....the location may be deceiving but for 30 cents....getting to the center... or....where ever.....facil....stay here and enjoy!!!!!

The hosts here were absolutely lovely! They went above and beyond to ensure that we were safe and felt comfortable. The room was clean, and had all amenities necessary. Highly recommend this hostel!

I think this was a perfect spot to stop by for a night. It was very close to the airport and bus station. The terrace was a cozy spot to hang at night and in the morning for breakfast. This is family operated and I could feel the love!
