Overhyped. No atmosphere. I had dorm bed with window to common area which had light on all the time. I had to sleep 3 nights with lights on. They didn’t even provide any curtains to help with that issue. Bathroom is good tho. Stuff was nice. However I found this dorms ridiculously disrespectful to force some guests to sleep in that way when others can sleep normally.
Very very dirty hostel. Pictures are obviously old. stayed there 5 nights, 2 of which i had freezing cold showers and 1 night the gas didn’t work in the kitchen which meant we missed out on the breakfast the next day. They could have offered a ‘non cooked breakfast’ but they said no. The hostel gets quiet around 12 at night but the bar echoes throughout. They offer discounts on stays if you give them a review, i believe this is the only reason they have any good reviews
Would not recommend at all! Staff member took my passport and forgot to lock it up instead left it out on reception (which is often unattended by any staff member) for anyone to grab. Terrible security!
Really poor stay here, Ive written a lengthy and harsh review on Google Maps so I wont do it again, but check that out if you want heavy details.
Catfish Hostel - wouldn’t recommend. Pictures look so much better than it was. All of the staff are volunteers and therefore didn’t care about atmosphere or facilities or general upkeep… pool was green and out of order, bar tan out of beer (they advertise cocktails but only have beer), Hostel felt a bit like a building site. One good thing - great bathrooms kept clean.
Colazione buona. Buona pulizia dei servizi sanitari. Staff disponibile. Clima vivace e inclusivo. Buone proposte di escursioni ed attività. Posizione non centralissima, ma buona.
Dante was great host! The other volunteers were mostly drugged out on the couch!

A really relaxing spot to explore Oxaca from in a great location! The hostel is social in an pressured way - there is a large social area with lots of different seating options so you can socialise as much or as little as you like! The staff are very helpful and breakfast great. Only downside is there’s no AC but there were two fans and a fan next to each bed in my room :)
One of my favourite hostels EVER!! It’s a chill social vibe rather than a full on party hostel, and everyone there was so lovely. Such a great common area too :)
Great hostel! The beds offer a lot of privacy, the terrace is nice and cozy and everything is cleaned daily! Great chill vibe in the evenings
Friendly and helpful staff, great location and price, very spacious showers that are actually good, and the sunset from the pool is a treat! The vibe for games night was great last night, thanks Maka!
This hostel had a great social area and was a good mixture between social and chill and the breakfast included was great
Overall I really enjoyed my stay at Maka, as the staff were very friendly, the location was excellent and the value was extraordinarily good. However, I do have one major comment to make. Oaxaca is located in Mexico, a Spanish speaking country. However, nearly everything in the hostel was written in English, including the flyers, signs and basic information. This is unfortunately another sad example of exclusionary Neo-colonialism. I hope the hostel can make an effort to rectify this.
looved my stay here! the vibes were the best the whole time i was there! the staff was so nice and they have great activities everyday and a perfect common area which makes it so easy to be social and meet people. beds were also comfy and the shower had the best water pressure and always hot water. would really recommend staying here!!
Truly the nicest hostel in Oaxaca! The staff is super friendly, the beds are very comfortable, and the showers are great too. There’s a really nice atmosphere, and I definitely recommend it!
Lovely staff and atmosphere was divine
Nice rooftop, and good breakfast
I loved my stay at Maka! The bed was comfy and had curtains and were in their own little nooks, and the showers were good. Sunset in the pool was great. Free brekky was so good and the kitchen had everything I needed. I joined their salsa class and BBQ events and they were fun, and most days there is something to do!
I stayed at Maka MX a few nights ago (4/6). I really liked the way the rooms are organized, so you have a relatively private space in the wooden bunks, with a slight recess at the end where you can keep more valuable items (the lockers also work and fit regular locks). I appreciate how the rooms are separated from the upstairs, so while it is a party hostel it is relatively easy to avoid noise when you want to sleep, you can sort of choose between party vibes and more chill vibes. There are lots...
Amazing staff!!! Loved the days i spent here :)
Great service all the time. The reception warm and friendly, clean, confortable and great vibe. Hope soon be back..
An amazing place to stay in the heart of Oaxaca. It is run by volunteers who are very friendly, and there’s a very sociable atmosphere so it’s a good place to meet other travellers. The bar has a great happy hour as well every night. The only thing I would say is that the tours are quite expensive, but other than that it was perfect!
Great hostel, lovely people! I’m a female traveler and felt really safe. I ended up change rooms and the staff were lovely. I extended my stay and I was given 10% off. Rihannon was lovely and helped me when I wanted to stay a couple more days. Free breakfast and coffee in the morning is good.
Was a very nice comfortable stay with a really nice communal area to either relax in your own space or get to know other travellers
Fantastic hostel with a great communal terrace where you can be social if you want but spacious enough to be anti-social if needed. Enjoyed the tour to Hierve el Agua. POS- Showers are great, i feel they’ve made good use of the space and a great kitchen Needs improvement- cookware is subpar
