Park Hotel Essex

To my astonishment upon arrival I was asked for a £100 refundable ‘Deposit’ in addition to the room fee. This has never happened to me before in 50 years of using hostels and hotels. I understand that in some hotels there is an opportunity to preauthorise a card to cover the bar, restaurant or room service but this Park Hotel dump had no bar or anything to spend £100 upon.
