Border Risk

Germany's 2026-05-14 update cites deadly military clashes since July 2025, a December 2025 ceasefire, continued border closures, unexploded ordnance risk, and particular concern in Banteay Meanchey and Oddar Meanchey.

The UK notice says heavy fighting took place along parts of the Thailand-Cambodia border in 2025, including airstrikes, rocket fire, and artillery fire. It says a ceasefire was signed on 27 December 2025 and the situation remains tense.

The distance thresholds differ by government. Canada and New Zealand use 50 km from the border. Germany and the UK use 20 km. Switzerland names the Thai border area, other border provinces within 50 km, Oddar Meanchey, and part of Preah Vihear.

If You Are Already In Cambodia

If you are in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Kampot, Koh Rong, or another area away from the Thai border, the official inputs do not say to leave Cambodia as a whole. They do say to avoid restricted border areas, monitor route-specific updates, and follow local instructions if transport, fuel, or security conditions change.

Do not assume a border crossing is open because it appears on a map or an old itinerary. Current notices mention border closures, border restrictions, transport disruption, and continuing tension after the ceasefire.

If your plan depends on a land crossing between Cambodia and Thailand, verify the crossing shortly before travel with official sources and local transport operators. Add slack if the route affects a flight, visa deadline, or prepaid booking.
